TAD-539 Telephone Answering System (430-0765) Programming Faxback Doc. # 18741 PROGRAMMING THE SECURITY CODE AND CONNECTING POWER You must choose and program the remote operation security code at the time you connect AC power. Select a number in the left column for the security code, and follow the steps shown in the action column next to that security code. NOTE: When you enter the security code, press and hold down the appropriate button until the TAD rewinds the tape. Security Code Action 0 Connect AC power without pressing any button. 1 Press and hold down ANN, then connect AC power. 2 Press and hold down PLAY/FF, then connect AC power. 4 Press and hold down MEMO/REW, then connect AC power. 5 Press and hold down STOP/ERS, then connect AC power. 7 Press and hold down ANS, then connect AC power. To connect AC power, plug the small end of the supplied AC adapter into the TAD's DC 9V jack. Then plug the adapter into a standard AC outlet. CAUTION: You must use a Class II, 120 volt AC/9 volt DC adapter that delivers at least 500 milliamps. Its center tip must be set to negative and its plug must correctly fit the TAD's DC 9V jack. The supplied adapter meets these requirements. Using an adapter that does not meet these requirements could damage the TAD or the adapter. When you first apply power, or when power is restored after a power failure, the TAD takes at least 1 minute to position the tape. If you have not recorded an outgoing message, the TAD rewinds the tape and sounds a long beep so you can record your outgoing message. NOTES: Once the security code is programmed, buttons 1, 4, 7, and * all activate the same code. Buttons 2, 5, 8, and 0 all activate the same code. Because the TAD only lets you program 0 for the first time with a blank tape, we do not recommend programming 0 for the security code. You can still use '0' to activate the security code if you program '2' or '5'. Buttons 3, 6, 9, and # are not used as security codes. After you complete each of the above actions, the TAD beeps to confirm the setting is completed. To change the security code, disconnect AC power and proceed as stated above. SETTING THE DIALING MODE Set P/T on the handset for the type of service you have (pulse or tone). If you are not sure which type of service you have, do this simple test. 1. Lift the handset and listen for a dial tone. 2. Set P/T to T. 3. Press any number other than 0. If the dial tone stops, you have touch- tone service. If the dial tone continues, you have pulse service. If you have pulse service, set P/T to P. NOTES: If P/T is set to P, there is a delay after you enter the number while the telephone finishes dialing the number. If you have a pulse line and want to use a tone service, see "Using Tone Services with a Pulse Line." SETTING THE RINGER SWITCH If you want to turn off the telephone's ringer, set RINGER on the right side of the phone's base to OFF. You can still make outgoing calls. If you hear an extension phone ring, you can still use your phone to answer calls. TELEPHONE OPERATION You can make and answer calls as you would with any other phone. Read this section to learn about special features. RESET Press RESET for about 1 second to disconnect a call without hanging up the handset. This feature is useful if you need to make several calls in a row. FLASH Many special telephone services require a switchhook signal. Pressing FLASH provides the electronic equivalent of this signal. For example, if you have call waiting (a service available from most telephone companies), you can put the first call on hold and take a second incoming call on the same line by pressing FLASH. Press FLASH again to return to the first call. NOTE: If you do not subscribe to a service that uses a switchhook signal, do not press FLASH during a call. You might disconnect the call. REDIAL To quickly dial the last number dialed, press REDIAL. The redial memory stores up to 32 digits (31 in tone mode), so you can redial local and long-distance numbers. NOTE: If you redial a number that includes a dialing mode change (changing from P to T), the telephone automatically switches from the pulse mode to the tone mode and continues dialing. The dialing mode change counts as one digit in the redial memory. USING TONE SERVICES WITH A PULSE LINE Some special services, such as alternate long-distance or bank-by-phone, require tone signals. You can use these services with a pulse line by following these steps. 1. With P/T set to P, call the tone service. 2. When the service answers, set P/T to T. 3. Follow the normal procedure for the service you are using. Any additional numbers you dial produce tone signals. 4. When you complete the call, set P/T back to P and hang up. (br/SP-1/16/96)
