ET-282 20-Memory Slim Fone (430-0548) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 19405 Connecting to the Telephone Line The ET-282 uses modular connectors. The accessories you need depend on the type of jacks or wiring you have: Modular Jacks - You need no extra equipment. Plug the supplied cord into the telephone line jack. Four-Prong Jacks - You need an adapter to connect the four-prong jack to the modular-telephone line plug. Adapters are available at Radio Shack. Hardwired Telephones - If your phones are wired directly to the wall, you need to convert to a modular system. You can get the necessary materials from Radio Shack and do the conversion yourself, or you can contact your telephone company to convert the system. Note, however, that the phone company can charge for this modification. If asked, advise the telephone company that the jack is type RJ-11C for use as a desk phone; use RJ-11W for wall mounting your ET-282. Route the cable into the groove on the bottom of the phone base. This groove acts as a strain relief and keeps the wire neat in appearance. Wall Installation If you wish, you can mount the ET-282 on a wall, using one of two methods. The first way is to use a standard wall plate. If you do not have such a plate, you can purchase one at your local Radio Shack. Instructions for mounting the plate are included with the wall plate. The second way is to use the two screws (not supplied). Follow this procedure if you choose this method: 1. Drill two holes for inserting the screws. Make the holes 3 15/16 inches (100 mm) apart. 2. Thread the screws into the wall, letting the heads extend about 1/8 of an inch (3.5 mm) from the wall. 3. Route the telephone cable inside the recessed channels on the back of the telephone. 4. Align the two screws with the two keyhole slots on the back of the telephone, and press down. 5. Hang the handset on the base unit. Setting the Ringer Volume Set the RINGER volume switch to select the desired volume: HI = Normal ringer volume. LO = Reduced volume. OFF = Ringer turned off. You can place outgoing calls. If another extension rings, signaling that a call is coming in, you can answer the call from the ET-282. Setting the Dialing Mode To determine the proper setting for the TONE/PULSE switch, you must find out whether your phone line is a rotary or touch-tone type. To do this, follow these steps below: 1. Set the TONE/PULSE switch to TONE. 2. Press, then release the Hang-up button to get a dial tone. 3. Press any number button. If the dial tone stops, you have a touch-tone line; leave the switch set to TONE. If the dial tone continues when you press a number button, you have a rotary line; set the switch to PULSE.
