TAD-253 (430-0763) Installation Faxback Doc. # 19512 The answering system is supplied with an MC-60 cassette tape (30 minutes of recording time per side). You can buy additional and different length cassettes at your local Radio Shack store. LOADING THE CASSETTE 1. Turn the supplied cassette's hub with a pencil to take up any tape slack. 2. Lift open the cassette compartment door. 3. Install the cassette in the compartment with its full reel to the right and its open edge toward the front of the answering system. 4. Close the cassette compartment door. NOTE: Replace the tape at least once a year, or more often if it is used heavily. CHOOSING A LOCATION You can place the answering system on a desktop or table or mount it on a wall. Select a location that is near a modular telephone jack and an AC outlet, and away from normal activities. If you do not have a modular phone jack, you can either: Update the wiring yourself. Radio Shack stores sell the jacks and adapters you need.. Have the phone company update it for you. The telephone company will charge you for the installation of the jack. NOTE: The USOC number of the jack to be installed is RJ11C for a baseboard jack or RJ11W for a wall jack. There is a handset holder on the top of the base. When you mount the phone on a wall, this handset holder lets you temporarily hang the handset without disconnecting the call (for example, when you have to retrieve something from another room). Lift the handset holder below the switchhook and turn it around to keep the handset from falling off when you mount the answering system on a wall. Desktop Connection To use your answering system on a desk, table, or shelf, plug the supplied telephone cord into a modular phone jack, then proceed to "Connecting the Handset.", see below. Wall Mounting Follow these steps to mount the answering system directly on the wall or on a wall plate. NOTE: To mount the answering system directly on a wall, you need two flathead screws (not include) with heads that fit into the keyhole slots on the supplied mounting bracket. Drill two holes 3 7/8 inches apart into a wall stud, then thread the screws into the wall, letting the heads extend about 1/8 inch from the wall. (Hint: 1/8 inch is about equal to two stacked pennies.) 1. Coil the unwanted part of the supplied modular cord into the recess of the wall-mount bracket. 2. Install the wall-mount bracket on the bottom of the answering system. 3. Plug the cord into a modular phone jack. 4. Place the bracket's keyhole slots over the screw heads or wall plate studs and press down on the answering system to secure it. CONNECTING THE HANDSET Plug one end of the handset cord into the jack on the answering system's left side. Plug the other end into the jack on the end of the handset. Then place the handset on the cradle. CONNECTING POWER Use the supplied AC adapter to power your answering system. CAUTIONS: You must use a Class II, 120V AC/9V AC adapter that delivers at least 500 milliamps, and its plug must correctly fit the answering system's AC jack. The supplied adapter meets these requirements. Using an adapter that does not meet these requirements could damage the answering system or the adapter. Always plug the adapter into the answering system before you plug it into an AC outlet. Always unplug the adapter from the AC outlet before you unplug it from the answering system. 1. Plug the small end of the supplied AC adapter into the answering system's POWER ADAPTER jack. 2. Plug the other end of the adapter into a standard AC outlet. NOTES: When the answering system is plugged into AC power, if the cassette tape is broken or is not inserted properly, the answering system beeps continuously, the PLAY/REW indicator digits, and Er appears on the display. To stop the beep, unplug the adapter from AC power and then plug it back in. Reinsert the cassette tape or replace it. When you connect the answering system to power, it rewinds the cassette tape, 00 appears on the display, and the message indicator lights. When you connect the answering system to power, if there is not an outgoing message on the tape, the answering system beeps continuously and 00 appears on the display. (EB 1/10/96)
