TAD-253 (430-0763) Operation Faxback Doc. # 19513 You can make and answer calls with this telephone as you would with any other phone. Read this section to learn about special features. REDIALING To quickly dial the last number dialed, press REDIAL. The redial memory stores up to 32 digits in both the tone and pulse modes so you can quickly redial local and long-distance numbers. USING FLASH Many special phone services, such as call waiting, require a switchhook signal. FLASH provides the electronic equivalent of a switchhook operation. For example, if you subscribe to call waiting, you can put your current call on hold and answer another call on the same line by pressing FLASH. Press FLASH again to alternate between the two calls. NOTES: Any digits you press before and after FLASH are stored in the redial memory. Press the switchhook then press REDIAL to redial the previous stored numbers. If you do not have any special telephone services, pressing FLASH might disconnect your current call. USING TONE SERVICES WITH A PULSE LINE Some special services, such as alternate long-distance and bank-by-phone, require tone signals. If you have pulse service, you can still use special tone services by following these steps. 1. Call the special service using pulse dialing. 2. When the service answers, set PULSE/TONE to TONE. 3. Follow the normal procedures for the special service you are using. Any additional numbers you dial are sent as tone signals. 4. When you complete the call, hang up the phone, then set PULSE/TONE back to PULSE. ANSWERING SYSTEM OPERATION RECORDING THE OUTGOING MESSAGE Before you can set the answering system to answer calls and record messages, you must record the message the caller hears when the answering system answers a call. In the message, ask for the caller's name, phone number, and message. The maximum length for your outgoing message is 29 seconds. Example: Hello! Thank you for calling. Please leave your name and number after the tone. Someone will return your call as soon as possible. WARNING: To help protect your home or office, do not tell callers you are away. Instead, say you cannot come to the phone at this time. Follow these steps to record the outgoing message. 1. Set STOP/ON to ON. If an outgoing message is already recorded, the answering system automatically plays it back. If there is no outgoing message, the answering system beeps continuously. 2. Press and hold down ANNC REC/PLAY until the red light turns off and the answering system beeps. 3. When the display begins to count down from 29, record your message. Speak in a strong voice about 12 inches away from the microphone. 4. When you finish recording your message, press ANNC REC/PLAY. The answering system beeps twice and plays back the message. Your outgoing message is first saved on a digital chip, and is then recorded onto the cassette tape. After you record your message, the tape rewinds and fast-forwards. Wait until the answering system beeps twice and the display shows 00 before continuing to operate your answering system. Checking the Outgoing Message Press ANNC REC/PLAY at any time to hear the outgoing message. The answering system beeps once and plays back the message. Adjust VOLUME on the right side of the answering system to a comfortable level. This does not affect the volume of the message the caller hears. After playback, the answering system beeps twice. SETTING THE ANSWERING SYSTEM TO ANSWER CALLS Set STOP/ON to ON so 00 appears on the display. The answering system is ready to answer calls. NOTES: You can turn on the answering system using its remote turn-on feature. The answering system hangs up and resets to answer the next call when: - The caller hangs up (only if your line has CPC). - The maximum message length time of about 60 seconds is up. - There are more than 7 seconds of silence or tones. The answering system can record up to about 29 minutes of incoming messages. If the incoming message tape reaches the end while a caller is leaving a message, the answering system beeps twice and hangs up. If the incoming message tape is full, the answering system answers a call after ten rings, plays back the outgoing message, then waits 7 seconds for the remote operation security code. See "Erasing the Messages" under "Remote Control Operation" to free up space on the tape. If the correct code is not entered, the answering system beeps twice and hangs up. If you do not want the answering system to answer any calls, set STOP/ON to STOP. The message indicator turns off and - - appears on the display. SCREENING CALLS To screen calls, let the answering system answer them. Listen to the caller's message through the answering system's speaker. If you decide to answer the call, pick up any phone on the same phone line as the answering system. The answering system stops recording and resets to answer the next call. NOTE: If you pick up the phone just as the answering system answers, the answering system might not stop playing the message. If this happens, hang up the phone for a moment and then pick it up again. PLAYING MESSAGES When you have messages, the red light blinks and the number of messages appears on the display. To play the messages, press PLAY/REW. The answering system beeps, rewinds, then plays the messages. At the end of all the messages, the answering system beeps twice, rewinds to the beginning, beeps twice again, and resets to answer calls. The display shows 00. To save the messages, after you listen to all your messages and the tape rewinds to the beginning, press SAVE/FAST-F once. The red light goes off and the answering system beeps. The tape fast forwards to the end of all the messages, and the number of messages appears on the display. Using Stop, Rewind, and Fast-Forward To stop playback, set STOP/ON to STOP. - - appears on the display and the red light turns off. To resume playback, set STOP/ON to ON again. To rewind the tape, press and hold down PLAY/REW while the tape is playing. Release PLAY/REW to resume playback. To fast-forward the tape, press and hold down SAVE/FAST-F while the tape is playing. Release SAVE/FAST-F to resume playback. If the tape reaches the end of all the messages, the answering system beeps twice. To replay the messages, simply press PLAY/REW again. POWER LOSS The answering system saves all information, including the outgoing message, on tape, so it will be saved during a power loss. If a power loss occurs, PL appears on the display. When power is restored, the answering system plays the tape automatically to put the outgoing message back in memory. The number of messages on the tape does not display, so press PLAY/REW to hear all the stored messages. After you press PLAY/REW and listen to any saved messages, the display resets to 00. NOTE: You cannot save the messages you play after a power loss. (EB 1/10/96)
