TAD-320 Telephone Answering System (430-0392) Remote Control Operation Faxback Doc. # 33551 You can control your TAD-320 remotely from any touch tone phone without any beeper or from any pulse dial phone using a pocket tone dialer (available at Radio Shack). The security code prevents an unauthorized person from controlling your TAD. Also no remote operation will start without the code. If the code is correct, the TAD will accept your remote commands; if it is not correct, the TAD continues its normal answer functions, but will not respond to remote commands. NOTE: The remote control may not work if you try to control from a telephone that sounds a short touch tone even though the button is pressed for a longer time or if you use a dialer that does not output a steady tone signal. In this case, try from another phone or try using another dialer. NOTES FOR USING THE POCKET TONE DIALER The tones from a tone dialer must pass through the carbon microphone of the telephone to get to the TAD. Many of these microphones are old and will not reproduce the tones accurately, causing erratic operation. The tips below will help you overcome this problem 1. Hold the handset in a vertical position. 2. Be sure the dialer speaker is centered over the mouthpiece. 3. If you continue to have problems, gently tap the handset on a hard surface. This will loosen the carbon particles in the microphone of an older phone and may make it work better. ACCESSING THE TAD-320 BY REMOTE CONTROL All remote control operations will begin with three basic steps. 1. Call your phone number. The TAD will answer and the outgoing messages announcement will begin. NOTE: When the ANSWER switch is set to TOLL SAVER, if no new messages have been received, the TAD will wait four rings before answering; if new messages were received, the TAD will answer on the first ring. When the ANSWER switch is set to IMMEDIATE, the TAD will answer on the first ring every time; the DELAY position causes the TAD to answer on the fourth ring, regardless of any new messages. 2. While the announcement sounds, press the * key. The outgoing message will stop. 3. Enter your security code. The TAD will announce the total number of all the recorded incoming messages; i.e., "Message total 5". Then it will be in the REMOTE STOP/STANDBY mode and be in the command state, ready to accept the next remote command. NOTES: Press the keys on the telephone or tone dialer slowly when entering code. Make each tone about 1 second long. If the code is incorrect, the TAD will continue the outgoing message announcement. If the outgoing message announcement restarts even when you enter the correct code, try pressing * and entering the security code again until the TAD accepts the code and announces the number of incoming messages received. Each time you enter a command by pressing a number key, the TAD will sound a short beep to indicate that it has accepted the command. Always proceed to the next step after hearing this short beep. PLAYBACK CALLS--KEY 2 1. Follow the three steps in "Accessing the TAD-320." 2. While the TAD is in the command state, press 2, PLAYBACK, to playback the new incoming messages. The TAD will rewind the incoming message tape to the beginning of the new messages and playback all your new messages. The TAD will announce the total of all the recorded messages (old and new) as the total message number, but it will play back only the new messages when 2, PLAYBACK is pressed as the next remote command. Zero Message Tone -- If no new messages have been recorded since the last time you called in, the TAD will sound three short beeps when accessed, then will wait for the next command. You may press 7 to reset the TAD to the answer mode and then hang up. If 30 seconds have passed while the TAD is in the REMOTE STOP/STANDBY mode, and no new command has been entered, the TAD will cycle the outgoing and incoming message tapes to their proper positions, and will then hang up the phone to answer the next call. If no new message has been recorded and 2 is pressed, 3-beeps (zero -message) will sound again. It is only when you press 2 in the command mode that the incoming message cassette is rewound to the beginning of the new messages and message playback starts. Each message is automatically indexed by a synthesized voice at its end with message number, time and date when it was recorded; i.e. "Message number one, nine forty-five AM, January Seven." 3. The TAD will automatically stop with 3 short beeps after the last message has been played. If you want to playback old messages, press 1, REWIND after the new messages have all played back. The TAD will rewind to the beginning of the new messages and STOP. Press 1 (rewind) again and the TAD will then rewind to the beginning of the incoming tape. Then press 2, PLAYBACK. 4. Press 7 and hang up the phone. The TAD will return to the answer mode and all messages will be retained. NOTES: The message number is consecutive from the beginning of the tape to the end. At the end of the last message point, if you enter command for playback or fast-forward, three beeps will sound to warn you. If the incoming tape comes to the end during remote playback, the TAD will stop automatically, and be ready to accept the next command. If you enter the commands of playback, fast-forward, next message, memo, and answer, it will sound 8 beeps as a warning. If you hang up while an incoming message is playing, the TAD will continue to playback all the messages and return to the answer mode automatically. If you try to call the TAD during these processes, you will get a busy signal. If the TAD detects a CPC signal after you hang up, it will soon return to the answer mode. Hang up the phone. The TAD will cycle the outgoing message tape to the beginning and the incoming message tape to the end of the current message group automatically and be ready to answer the next call. This command is also used to remotely turn on the TAD. NOTES: If you forget to press 7 before hanging up, the TAD-320 will automatically return to the answer mode after 30 seconds have elapsed while the TAD was awaiting a command. If the TAD detects CPC signal after you hang up, it will soon return to the answer mode. MEMO--KEY 8 You may leave a memo at any point on the incoming message tape. The mode of the TAD may be either ANNOUNCE AND RECORD or ANNOUNCE ONLY. 1. Press 0 to stop the previous remote function. 2. Press 8. A 5-second tone will begin. 3. When the tone stops, speak into the phone. Your message will be recorded on the incoming message tape. 4. After the message is completed, press 0 to end the MEMO mode. NOTE: If you to retain all the messages previously recorded, press 3 to fast-forward the incoming tape to end of the last message before pressing 8. ROOM MONITOR--KEY 9 You can listen remotely to what is going on in the room where the TAD is positioned. Press 0, then press 9. The TAD will sound a tone, then you will hear the sounds of the room the TAD is placed in through the phone for up to 30 seconds. When 30 seconds have passed, a tone will ound and the outgoing message will be played back again. To continue monitoring, press 0 during playback, then press 9. To stop monitoring at will, press 0. NOTE: If no key is pressed during playback of the outgoing message after 30-second monitoring ends, the TAD will disconnect the telephone line, then be ready to answer the next call. It would be better to monitor the room at the end of your remote operation. STOP/STANDBY--KEY 0 To stop or cancel any current function, press 0. Remember that the TAD will not be deactivated by pressing 0 but it will be placed in the command state, ready to accept the next remote command. The TAD will enter this command state not only when 0 is pressed but also when it completes any remote function. If 30 seconds have passed after the remote stop/standby mode starts and no remote command has been entered during this period, the TAD will cycle the outgoing message tape to the beginning and the incoming message tape to the end of the new message group automatically, then hang up the phone to answer the next call. NOTE: If you press 0 during the cycling of the tapes above before the TAD hangs up, the TAD will return to the stop/standby mode again and be ready to accept the next command. DISABLING THE TAD--KEY # To disable the TAD by remote control (remote turn-off function): 1. Press 0 to set the TAD in the stop/standby mode. 2. Press #. 3. Press 7 within 5 seconds after pressing #. The TAD will hang up the phone immediately and will not answer further calls. This command is also known as remote turn-off. RESETTING THE TAD BEFORE HANGING UP Before hanging up the phone when finishing the remote operation, always complete these four steps: 1. Be sure that TAD is in the mode that you want it to perform further (ANNOUNCE AND RECORD or ANNOUNCE ONLY). To change the mode, press 0 (STOP/STANDBY), then press 4 (MODE CHANGE). 2. Set the incoming message tape to the desired position. Be careful that the messages are not accidentally erased by the new messages' recording. To prevent this, use key 3 (Fast-Forward) to advance the tape to the end of the last message. If you want to record over, use key 1 (REWIND) to rewind the tape to the beginning of the current messages or to the beginning of the tape. 3. Press 7 (ANSWER) to return the TAD to the answer mode. 4. Hang up the phone. NOTES: If you hang up the phone during remote playback or rewinding and the TAD detects CPC signal then, it will fast-forward the incoming message tape to the end of the last message, and become ready to answer the next call. If the TAD does not detect a CPC signal, it will continue playback to the end of the last message and enter the answer mode. If you call it during this period, you will get a busy signal.
