SPP-X50 / 30 Sony Cordless Telephone (430-8003) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 33562 CHOOSING TONE OR PULSE DIALING For the telephone to work correctly, you must set it to your type of dialing system: tone or pulse dialing. SETTING THE DIAL MODE Set the DIAL MODE switch to: TONE if your dialing system is tone. PULSE if your dialing system is pulse. NOTE: If you have pulse dialing, be sure to read the "Using touch-tone services (for pulse dialing systems only)", on Faxback Doc. # 33563, section before you make long distance calls. IF YOU ARE NOT SURE 1. Make a trial call with the DIAL MODE switch set to TONE. 2. If the call is connected, leave the switch at TONE. Otherwise, set the switch to PULSE. ADJUSTING THE VOLUMES ADJUSTING THE RINGER The RINGER switch on the base unit controls the volume of the ringer, while the RING ON/BATT SAVE switch on the cordless handset turns the ringer on or off. If you do not want to be disturbed by telephone calls, you can turn the switches off. ON THE BASE UNIT Move the RINGER switch to H (High), L (Low), or OFF to turn the ringer off. NOTE: With the ringer off, the base unit still rings on intercom. ON THE CORDLESS HANDSET Move the RING ON/BATT SAVE switch to: RING ON to turn the ringer on. This is desirable if you plan to use the cordless handset in a location where you can hear the base unit ring. NOTE: In the RING ON mode the cordless handset consumes battery power even when you are not talking on the cordless handset. BATT SAVE to turn the ringer off to save battery power. This is useful if you plan to use the cordless handset in a location where you can hear the base unit ring. In this setting, the cordless handset will not ring, though calls can still come in. NOTE: In the BATT SAVE mode, the cordless handset does not ring on intercom or when a call comes in. ADJUSTING THE SPEAKER VOLUME You can adjust the volume of the speaker on the base unit or the cordless handset. ON THE BASE UNIT Slide the SPEAKER VOL control toward the right to increase the volume, or toward the left to decrease it. ON THE CORDLESS HANDSET During phone conversations, press VOL/PGM. In the standard usage of the cordless handset, each press of VOL/PGM switches the speaker volume between "high" and "low." When the speakerphone is used, each press of VOL/PGM cycles through "standard," "high," and "low." TO OBTAIN THE BEST SPEAKERPHONE PERFORMANCE You may not be able to hear the other party's voice in a noisy place. Therefore, use the speakerphone in a quiet room. Do not bring your hand or other object too close to the microphone or you will hear a shrill noise ("feedback"). When the speaker volume is loud, or the telephone has been placed close to a wall, you may find that the volume drops suddenly. This is due to a circuit in the telephone designed to protect against feedback. In such cases, lower the speaker volume slightly. KEEPING YOUR CONVERSATIONS CONFIDENTIAL (X50 ONLY) The cordless handset operates like a radio transmitter. Although it uses different frequencies than conventional AM or FM radios, the conversations can nevertheless be "picked up" by special radio equipment. If you are concerned about eavesdropping, you can turn on the scramble system. The sound quality, however, is better when the scramble system is off. 1. Press VOL/PGM. The "P P P P P P" message flashes on the display. 2. Press 7, 2, and 7. "727" stands for "SCR," an abbreviation for "SCRAMBLE". 3. Press VOL/PGM. The "SCRAMBLE" message appears on the display. TO TURN OFF THE SCRAMBLE SYSTEM Repeat the above steps so that the "SCRAMBLE" message disappears from the display. THE CORDLESS HANDSET WILL NOT MEET THE FCC STANDARDS FOR HEARING AID COMPATIBILITY WHEN THE SCRAMBLE SYSTEM IS TURNED ON. (YO/EB 6/11/96)
