SPP-X50 / 30 Sony Cordless Telephone (430-8003) Operation Faxback Doc. # 33563 MAKING CALLS FROM THE CORDLESS HANDSET With the cordless handset, you are free to roam around your home and talk on the phone. 1. Press TALK (or SPEAKERPHONE). The phone tries to scan for a clear channel (for up to 20 seconds). When it is found, you hear a dial tone. NOTE: If the "OUT OF RANGE" message appears on the display, see Faxback Doc. # 33567. 2. DIAL A PHONE NUMBER. The phone number appears on the display and after a while changes to the talk time counter. NOTE: The talk time counter counts only talk time on the cordless handset. 3. When you finish talking, press TALK (or SPEAKERPHONE). The call is disconnected and the talk time counter disappears from the display in a few seconds. NOTE: Depending on the button you pressed in step 1, press TALK or SPEAKERPHONE to finish a call. Otherwise the call is still connected. SWITCHING TO THE SPEAKERPHONE DURING CONVERSATION 1. Press SPEAKERPHONE. 2. Resume talking. To return, press TALK again. REDIALING You can redial the last number called with just one touch of the REDIAL/ PAUSE button. 1. Press TALK (or SPEAKERPHONE) on the cordless handset. 2. Press REDIAL/PAUSE. The last sequence of numbers dialed will be automatically redialed. NOTE: The number must not be longer than 32 digits (the tone and pause digits are each counted as one digit); otherwise you will hear five short error beeps and the call will not be connected. TO ERASE THE LAST PHONE NUMBER DIALED While both phone units are not in use, press REDIAL/PAUSE twice. The number is erased from the memory. RECEIVING CALLS ON THE BASE UNIT (X50 ONLY) You can also use the speakerphone on the base unit to receive calls. 1. When you hear the phone ring, press SPEAKERPHONE. The LINE lamp lights. 2. When you finish talking, press SPEAKERPHONE. The LINE lamp goes off and the call is disconnected. RECEIVING CALLS ON THE CORDLESS HANDSET Receiving calls on the cordless handset is easy: just press any key ("any key talk" function). This allows you to receive calls at any place inside your house and in any situation (e.g. In the dark). You can also use the speakerphone to receive calls. 1. When you hear the phone ring, press any key or SPEAKERPHONE to use the speakerphone. The dialing keys light and after a while the talk time counter appears on the display. 2. When you finish talking, press TALK (or SPEAKERPHONE). The call is disconnected and the talk time counter disappears from the display in a few seconds. TALKING BETWEEN THE PHONE UNITS (INTERCOM) The base unit and the cordless handset come with an intercom to allow them to communicate with each other. You can still receive calls while using the intercom. FROM THE BASE UNIT TO THE CORDLESS HANDSET 1. Press INTERCOM on the base unit. The cordless handset rings. NOTE: Make sure the cordless handset is in the RING ON mode. 2. The person answering the cordless handset can press any key (or SPEAKERPHONE to use the speakerphone). The ringing stops and you can begin the phone conversation. 3. When you finish the conversation: For X50: Press SPEAKERPHONE. For X30: Press INTERCOM. Also, the other person should press TALK (or SPEAKERPHONE) on the cordless handset. RECEIVING CALLS WHILE ON THE INTERCOM When a call comes in, the base unit will ring but not the cordless handset. FOR X50 If the intercom on the base unit or cordless handset is disconnected, the other phone user can automatically take the incoming call. FOR X30 Since the base unit cannot take incoming calls, the base unit user must disconnect the intercom. The cordless handset then rings and the cordless handset user must manually take the incoming call. FROM THE CORDLESS HANDSET TO THE BASE UNIT 1. Press INTERCOM on the cordless handset. The base unit rings. 2. The person answering the base unit should: FOR X50: Press SPEAKERPHONE. FOR X30: Press INTERCOM. Then ringing stops and you can begin the phone conversation. NOTE: When using the intercom feature, the base unit will still ring even if the RINGER switch on the base unit is set to OFF. 3. When you finish the conversation, just press TALK. Also, the other person should: For X50: Press SPEAKERPHONE. For X30: Press INTERCOM. RECEIVING CALLS WHILE ON THE INTERCOM When a call comes in the base unit will ring, but not the cordless handset. For X50 If the intercom on the base unit or cordless handset is disconnected, the other phone user can automatically take the incoming call. For X30 Since the base unit cannot take incoming calls, the base unit user must disconnect the intercom. The cordless handset then rings and the cordless handset user must manually take the incoming call. VOICE PAGING THE BASE UNIT The cordless handset user can voice-page someone near the base unit without any operation on the base unit. Incoming calls can still be received during voice paging. 1. Press VOL/PGM. The "P P P P P P" message flashes on the display. 2. Press INTERCOM. The confirmation beeps can be heard on both phone units. 3. Start talking. Your message will be paged on the base unit. 4. Press TALK to finish. If a call comes in during voice paging Finish voice paging and take the call. TRANSFERRING A CALL (X50) When you are talking on one of the phone calls you can transfer the call to someone holding the other phone unit to continue the conversation. However, you cannot use voice paging to page the other phone unit. From the base unit to the cordless handset 1. Ask your party to wait while you transfer the call. 2. Press INTERCOM. (If you have accidentally pressed HOLD, just press INTERCOM and you will get the same result as pressing INTERCOM only.) The HOLD lamp flashes and the cordless handset rings. If no one answers the cordless handset, press INTERCOM again to resume the conversation. NOTE: While the HOLD lamp is flashing, you cannot receive incoming calls and cannot hear the "call waiting" tone if you have this service. 3. The cordless handset user can press any key (or SPEAKERPHONE to use the speakerphone). The cordless handset stops ringing and you can talk to the cordless handset user before transferring the call. 4. Press SPEAKERPHONE. The call is transferred to the cordless handset and the HOLD lamp goes off. From the cordless handset to the base unit 1. Ask your party to wait while you transfer the call. 2. Press INTERCOM on the cordless handset. (If you have accidentally pressed HOLD just press INTERCOM and you will get the same result as pressing INTERCOM only.) The running "HOLD" message appears on the display. If no one answers the base unit, press INTERCOM again to resume the conversation. NOTE: While the running "HOLD" message appears, you cannot receive incoming calls and cannot hear the "call waiting" tone if you have this service. 3. The base unit user should press SPEAKERPHONE. The base unit stops ringing and you can talk to the base unit user before transferring the call. The running "HOLD" message disappears from the display. 4. Press TALK (or SPEAKERPHONE) on the cordless handset. The call is transferred to the base unit. PUTTING A CALL ON HOLD The HOLD button allows you to temporarily suspend a phone conversation without disconnecting the call. When a call is on hold, you will not be able to hear the caller, and the caller will not be able to hear you. If you pick up another phone unit connected to the same phone line, the hold will be automatically released and you will be able to resume conversation on that phone. ON THE BASE UNIT (X50 ONLY) To put the call on hold. Press HOLD. The HOLD lamp flashes. NOTE: While the HOLD lamp is flashing, you cannot receive incoming calls and cannot hear the "call waiting" tone if you have this service. To resume the conversation Press SPEAKERPHONE or HOLD. ON THE CORDLESS HANDSET To put the call on hold Press HOLD. The running "HOLD" message appears on the display. NOTE: While the running "HOLD" message appears on the display, you cannot receive incoming calls and cannot hear the "call waiting" tone if you have this service. To resume the conversation Press HOLD, TALK, or SPEAKERPHONE. If you put the call on hold for more than four minutes The cordless handset will turn off automatically to save battery power, but the call will remain connected on the base unit. Pressing TALK (or SPEAKERPHONE) will turn on the cordless handset and put it on hold again. SWITCHING PHONE UNITS DURING A CALL (X50 ONLY) You can switch a phone conversation from one of the phone units to the other. This is handy when, for example, you need to move from your desk to another room but you want to continue the conversation. From the base unit to the cordless handset 1. Put the call on hold on the base unit. 2. Press HOLD on the cordless handset to resume the conversation. The HOLD lamp on the base phone goes off. NOTE: You can also press TALK or SPEAKERPHONE instead of HOLD. From the cordless handset to the base unit 1. Put the call on hold on the cordless handset. 2. Press SPEAKERPHONE on the base unit to resume the conversation. The running "HOLD" message disappears from the display. Using touch-tone service (for pulse dialing systems only) Some services require you to use touch-tone. This is not a problem if your phone already uses tone dialing. If your phone uses pulse dialing, however, you need to follow the steps below to use these services. 1. Dial the service number. 2. When connected to the service, press TONE (*). NOTE: You only need to press TONE once to turn dialing to tone; this will remain effective until the call is disconnected. 3. Press the dialing keys as required. Using "call waiting" service If you have subscribed to "call waiting" service, you can continue receiving calls while talking on the cordless handset. When a new call comes in, you can put the current call on hold and switch to the new call. 1. When a new call comes in while you are talking, press FLASH. The current caller is put on hold and you can answer the new call. NOTE: If you have not subscribed to "call waiting" service, pressing FLASH will disconnect the call. 2. When you want to switch back to the first caller, press FLASH again. Pressing FLASH lets you switch between the two calls. IF INTERFERENCE OCCURS ON THE CORDLESS HANDSET The cordless handset can work on ten channels, so if you experience interference while using one channel, you can switch to another channel to improve the sound quality of your cordless phone conversation. Interference while dialing If interference noise occurs during dialing, you hear five short error beeps and the "OUT OF RANGE" message flashes on the display. When this occurs, move closer to the base unit and press FLASH, then dial again. Interference during a conversation Press CHANNEL. The phone will select a new channel. You may hear noise for an instant. When the noise stops, continue your conversation. If interference continues, move closer to the base unit. NOTE: After you press CHANNEL, if you still hear five short error beeps and the "OUT OF RANGE" message flashes on the display, move closer to the base unit. (YO/EB 6/11/96)
