EC-442 (650-0847) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 15798 AN OVERVIEW OF THE EC-442 Selecting the Mode The EC-442 has eight operation modes. Press key for the mode you want. TEL Telephone Directory - stores telephone numbers, names, and addresses, plus six other types of information. MEMO Memo - stores any type of important record. SCHEDULE Scheduler - stores details of events, including date, time and type. Also sounds a schedule alarm at the time you set. CALENDAR Calendar - displays any monthly calendar from January 1901 through December 2099. HOME Home Time - displays the current date, time and day of the week for the selected home time zone. Also sounds a daily alarm at the time you set. WORLD World Time - displays the current time for the selected home time zone and for any of 29 other time zones. REMINDER Reminder Mode - keeps track of annual, monthly, and daily events and can also sound a reminder alarm. CAL Calculator - performs most basic calculations. The telephone directory, memo, scheduler, and reminder modes are the databank modes that let you store, recall, edit, remove, and transfer records. For complete instructions on using the databank modes, see "Databank Operation". RESETTING THE EC-442 Before you operate the EC-442 for the first time, reset it to clear any records that might already be in its memory. WARNING: The following procedure erases all data stored in the memory, including mark-protected data (see "Marking a Record"). Perform this operation only when you want to delete all data and re- initialize the EC-442. 1. Press RESET on the back of the unit with a thin, pointed object, such as a straightened paper clip. 2. Turn over the unit. The display shows the following: ALL DATA CLEAR! OK? Y/N Press Y to reset the memory and delete all data or N to cancel the reset operation without deleting anything. These are the initial settings produced by the reset operation. Home Time Zone: London (LON) Schedule Alarm: ON Home Time Setting: 12:00 AM, Reminder Alarm: ON January 1, 1992 Daily Alarm: Off 12/24-Hour Clock: 12-Hour Clock Key Tone: On World Time: New York (NYC) Character Input Mode:CAPS Daily Alarm Time: 12:00 PM NOTE: If the EC-442 is exposed to a strong electrostatic charge, the display might dim or the EC-442 may lock up. First try resetting the EC-442 by the above procedure. If this still does not correct the problem, remove the battery compartment cover screw and press the button inside. Then perform the reset operation to initialize the databank. TURNING THE EC-442 ON AND OFF Press ON to turn on the EC-442. Press OFF to turn it off. If you do not press a key within about 6 minutes, the EC-442 automatically turns off. To restore power, press ON. NOTE: If the EC-442 turns itself off while in the data entry mode, the data is not stored. Data Error When you turn on the EC-442, it performs a self check before beginning operation. If the EC-442 detects a problem with the data in memory, it displays this message: DATA ERROR! CONSULT THE OWNER'S MANUAL Once data is lost, it cannot be recovered. Such data errors are generally caused by one of the following problems. Interruption of battery power. Severe electrostatic charge, impact, change in temperature, or change in humidity. Hardware problem. When the Data Error display appears, you cannot enter or edit data, although you can recall data after pressing CLEAR. To return memory to normal so you can enter and edit data, perform the reset operation to clear the memory (see "Resetting the EC-442"). Before doing so, make sure you have a written record of any important data. You can then re-enter the data after clearing the memory. If you still have trouble after trying the reset operation, you might have a hardware problem. If so, consult your local Radio Shack store for assistance. ADJUSTING THE DISPLAY CONTRAST Rotate CONTRAST on the left side of the unit to make the display lighter or darker. CURSOR KEYS The _ on the screen is called a "cursor." The cursor indicates the position where you enter the next letter, number, or symbol. The cursor keys move the cursor to the right or left along a data line, and up or down to other data lines. Arrows are not marked on the cursor keys, but for explanation, we use the arrow symbols in this manual. RIGHT SYMBOL Moves the cursor to the right DOWN SYMBOL Moves the cursor down one line UP SYMBOL Moves the cursor up one line LEFT SYMBOL Moves the cursor to the left. USING THE FUNCTION KEY Press FUNC to access and perform special functions not marked on the keys, such as switching between the 12 and 24 hour clock, turning the daily alarm on/off, and so on. The function menu appears on the display. Use the cursor keys to select a function, and then press SET. Some functions have a secondary menu. Repeat the process to make another selection. TURNING THE KEY INPUT TONE ON AND OFF 1. Press FUNC 2. Press 4 to select the SOUND menu. 3. Use UP and DOWN SYMBOLS to select KEYS. 4. Use LEFT or RIGHT SYMBOL to switch the setting ON or OFF. A flashing dot indicates the currently selected item. A fixed dot next to an item indicates its on/off status. 5. Press SET. SETTING/VIEWING THE TIME DISPLAYS Home time shows the current date and time for the selected home zone. World time displays the current time in any of the 30 time zones around the globe. You can also choose between 12- and 24-hour formats, or specify daylight saving time for the home time or any world time zone. Home Time Displays There are three home time displays: the clock, map, and alarm. NOTES: The AM or PM indicator appears only in the 12-hour format. Press DISP CHNG to switch between the world time display and the world map display. Selecting the 12- or 24-Hour Format 1. Press HOME to display the clock, and then press FUNC so 12/24 HOURS appears on the menu display. 2. Press 2 to select between the 12-hour and 24-hour formats. The clock display appears in a 12- or 24-hour format. AM or PM appears on the display in the 12-hour format and disappears in the 24-hour format. Selecting the Date Format 1. Press HOME to display the clock, and then press FUNC until DATE FORMAT appears in the function menu. 2. Press 3 to select DATE FORMAT. 3. Enter the number to select one of these formats: 1 Y/M/D: 1994/ 1/ 1 SAT 2 M/D/Y: JAN/ 1/ 1994 SAT 3 D/M/Y: 1/JAN/1994 SAT The selected display format appears. Setting the Home Date and Time We recommend you use a radio or telephone time service to accurately set the clock. 1. Press HOME to display the clock and press FUNC until HOME TIME SET appears on the function menu. 2. Press 1 to select HOME TIME SET. The hour display flashes. 3. Enter the hour. 4. Press RIGHT SYMBOL so the minute display flashes. 5. Enter the minute. Set the minute 1 or 2 minutes ahead of the current time. 6. If you are using the 12-hour format, press A for AM or P for PM. Press RIGHT SYMBOL so the year flashes. 7. Enter the year, month and day in the same manner. 8. For the most accurate time, press SET when the radio or time service announces the time you just entered. The clock starts counting from 00 seconds. Selecting Your Home Time Zone 1. Press HOME to display the clock. 2. Press FUNC until ZONE CHANGE appears on the function menu. 3. Press 1 to select ZONE CHANGE. The currently selected ZONE flashes on the display with its city code. 4. Use RIGHT SYMBOL and LEFT SYMBOL to scroll horizontally until the desired home time zone flashes and its city code appears (see "City Codes". 5. Press SET.
