EC-353 (650-0852) Care and Maintenance Faxback Doc. # 16730 The Radio Shack EC-353 Talking Data Directory is an example of superior design and craftsmanship. The following suggestions will help you care for the EC-353 so you can enjoy it for years. Keep the EC-353 dry. If it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately. Liquids can contain minerals that can corrode electronic circuits. Use and store the EC-353 only in normal temperature environments, and avoid sudden temperature changes. Temperature changes. Temperature extremes can shorten the life of electronic devices, damage batteries, and distort or melt plastic parts. Below 32 degrees F or above 110 degrees F, the display's response time might slow down or the display might fail completely. This is only temporary. The EC-353 works normally again when the temperature returns to the normal range. Handle the EC-353 gently and carefully. Dropping it can damage the circuit boards and can cause the EC-353 to work improperly. Keep the EC-353 away from dirt and dust, which can cause premature wear of parts. Wipe the EC-353 with a damp cloth occasionally to keep it looking new. Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, or strong detergents to clean the EC-353. Handle the EC-353 gently and carefully. NOTE: If the EC-353 is exposed to strong static electrical charges, the display might become dim or the EC-353 might fail to respond. If this happens, reset the EC-353 (see "Resetting the EC-353"). Modifying or tampering with the EC-353's internal components can cause a malfunction and might invalidate its warranty. If the EC-353 is not performing as it should, take it to your local Radio Shack store for assistance. REPLACING THE BATTERY The EC-353 is powered by one CR2032 3-volt lithium battery. When the display dims, replace the battery (Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-162). WARNING: Never let children play with batteries. Swallowing a lithium battery can be fatal. CAUTIONS: Use only a fresh battery of the required size and type. Always remove an old or weak battery. It can leak chemicals that can destroy electronic circuits. Have a fresh battery on hand before you begin. You must install the new battery within 20 seconds after removing the old one, or you will lose the information stored in the EC-353. To prevent losing the information stored in the EC-353, do not press any buttons while replacing the battery. To prevent battery leakage, replace the battery at least once every five years. Follow these steps to replace the battery. 1. Wait until the EC-353 turns off. 2. Remove the battery compartment cover by sliding it in the direction of the arrow. 3. Remove the old battery and dispose of it promptly and properly. CAUTION: Do not bury or burn the battery. 4. Install the fresh battery with the positive (+) side up. 5. Replace the battery compartment cover. After replacing the battery, you must re-enter the current date and time, the daily alarm time, and reset the key tone, hourly chime, and daily alarm.
