To turn off the EC-378, press OFF. If you do not press a key within about 3 minutes, your EC-378 automatically turns off to save battery power. TURNING THE KEY TONE ON AND OFF If the key tone is on, your EC-378 beeps each time you press a key. Top turn off the key tone (or turn it back on again), press ALARM TIME, then while the clock/calendar appears on the display, press K. ENTERING TELEPHONE FILES, SCHEDULER, REMINDERS, OR AN ALARM 1. Press NAME, SCHED, ALARM, then press ENTER. The first character flashes. 2. Enter the information. 3. Press ENTER to store each entry. To turn the daily alarm on or off, press ALARM until ALARM appears to show the alarm is on, or disappears to show it is off. RECALLING FILES To recall a telephone file, press NAME, enter the first two or three characters of the file, and then press ENTER To recall a scheduler file, press SCHED, and then press ARROW DOWN or ARROW UP to scroll forward or backward through the files. To recall an alarm time, press ALARM. EDITING FILES 1. Recall the telephone or scheduler file. 2. Press ERASE. The cursor appears under the first character. 3. Repeatedly press ARROW RIGHT until the flashing cursor appears under the character you want to edit or erase. If necessary, press ELBOW ARROW to move to the number or date. 4. Press ERASE again to delete the incorrect information. 5. Enter the correct information, then press ENTER to store the corrected entry. DELETING FILES 1. Recall the telephone or scheduler file. 2. Press and hold down ERASE until DELETE? Y/N appears. 3. To delete the file, press Y. To keep the file, press N. STORING FILES MEMORY CAPACITY Each letter, number, space, or other character you store uses l unit of memory. Your EC-378 can store up to 12,120 units of information in its memory. To display the remaining memory, press NAME or SCHED. The amount of available units appears on the display. Full appears on the display if, no memory units are available. You can delete telephone files or scheduler reminders to free additional memory units (see "Deleting Telephone Records" or "Deleting Scheduler Reminders"). DATA ENTRY TIPS Press SPACE to enter a space. Press ERASE to erase the last character entered (backspace). Press TIME at any time to clear the display and return to the time and date. Always keep a written record of all important names and numbers. All electronic devices are subject to data loss. USING THE TELEPHONE DIRECTORY You can enter a person's name or company name and 2 telephone numbers (for example, 1 telephone number and 1 fax number) into each telephone directory file. The name can be up to 50 characters, and the numbers can be up to 12 digits each, including spaces. 1. Press NAME. CONTACTS? and the remaining memory units appear on the display. 2. Press ENTER. The C in CONTACTS? flashes on the display. 3. Enter the person's or company's name (up to 50 characters). Note: If you enter more than 12 characters, ARROW LEFT appears on the 12th character and the display scrolls to the left as you enter more characters. 4. Press ENTER. #1 appears on the left of the display. 5. Use the number keys to enter the first telephone number (up to 12 characters). 6. Press ENTER again. #2 appears on the left of the display. 7. Use the number keys to enter the second telephone number. 8. Press ENTER to store the file. WAIT appears briefly on the display. NOTES: If you do not want to store a second telephone number, simply press ENTER when the cursor appears on the #2 line. You cannot leave the #1 telephone number blank and enter a number on the #2 line. 9. Repeat Steps 2-8 to store more telephone directory files. RECALLING TELEPHONE FILES The telephone files are stored in alphabetical order by name. You can recall telephone files by sequential or index recall. Sequential Recall 1. Press NAME. CONTACTS? and the remaining memory units appear on the display. 2. Press ARROW DOWN. The first telephone file appears. NOTE: When ARROW RIGHT appears to the right of a message, press ARROW RIGHT to scroll the display to the right to see the remaining characters. 3. To recall other telephone files, repeatedly press ARROW DOWN to scroll forward or ARROW UP to scroll backward. Index Recall 1. Press NAME. CONTACTS? and the remaining memory units appear on the display. 2. Enter the first few characters (up to three) of the person's or company's name you want to find. 3. Press ENTER. The first matching file appears. NOTES: When ARROW RIGHT appears to the right of a file, press ARROW RIGHT to scroll the display to the right to see the remaining characters. If no file starts with the characters you entered, NOT FOUND appears on the display. 4. To recall other files, repeat Steps 2 and 3 or press ARROW DOWN to scroll forward or ARROW UP to scroll backward. EDITING TELEPHONE FILES 1. Recall the file you want to edit. 2. Press ERASE. The cursor and the first character in the file alter- nately flash on the display. 3. Repeatedly press ARROW RIGHT until the flashing cursor appears under the characters or digits you want to edit or erase. If necessary, press ENTER to move the flashing cursor down to the first or second telephone line. 4. Press ERASE to erase an incorrect character, then enter the correct character or press SPACE to add a space. If the date or time is incorrect, move the cursor to the incorrect digit, then enter the correct digit. 5. When you finish editing, press ENTER again until CONTACTS? appears on the display to store the corrected file. DELETING TELEPHONE FILES 1. Recall the file you want to delete. 2. Press and hold down ERASE until DELETE? Y/N appears. 3. To delete the file, press Y. The entire record is deleted, and memory increases by an amount equal to the size of the deleted file CONTACTS? and the remaining memory appear on the display. To keep the file, press N. The record remains in memory and on the display. USING THE SCHEDULER You can use the scheduler to remind you of meetings and other important events. Each reminder message can be up to 50 characters. At the set schedule alarm time, the EC-378 beeps for about 30 seconds, and the corresponding message appears on the display. If the EC-378 is off at the set time, the EC-378 turns itself on, beeps, and displays the message. To silence the EC-378, press any key. NOTES: The EC-378 beeps when it reaches the set reminder time, regardless of whether or not the daily alarm is turned on or off. You must manually delete scheduler reminders from the organizer's memory; they do not automatically delete when the set time has passed. See "Deleting Scheduler Reminders." Since pressing any key turns off the reminder alarm, the EC-378 might not sound or display the message if you are entering information when the scheduled time arrives. If the EC-378 beeps and the reminder message appears while you are entering information, that information might not be stored. ENTERING SCHEDULER REMINDERS 1. Press SCHED. SCHEDULE? and the remaining memory units appear on the display. 2. Press ENTER. The S in SCHEDULE? flashes on the display. 3. Enter the reminder message you want to have appear when the schedule alarm sounds. NOTE: If you enter 12 or more characters, ARROW RIGHT appears at the right of the display and the display scrolls to the right as you enter more characters. 4. Press ENTER. The date and time appear on the display with the first month digit flashing. 5. Enter the reminder's date and time, and press A or P for an AM PM hour. Precede single digit entries with a zero; for example, to set a reminder alarm for September 5, at 2:00 PM, press 09 05 02 00 P. 6. Press ENTER to store the reminder's date and time. NOTE: If you try to store an entry with an invalid date or time, the flashing cursor returns to the first month digit, and the entry is not stored. Correct the information, then press ENTER RECALLING SCHEDULER REMINDERS Scheduler reminders are stored in chronological order. Follow these steps to recall a scheduler reminder. 1. Press SCHED. SCHEDULE? and the remaining memory units appear on the display. 2. Press ARROW DOWN. The earliest scheduler reminder appears. 3. To recall other scheduler reminders, repeatedly press ARROW DOWN to scroll forward or ARROW UP to scroll backward. NOTE: When ARROW RIGHT appears at the right of a message, press ARROW RIGHT to scroll the display to the right to see the remaining characters. EDITING SCHEDULER REMINDERS 1. Recall the scheduler reminder you want to edit. 2. Press ERASE. The cursor appears under the first character in the message, and that character flashes. 3. Repeatedly press ARROW RIGHT until the flashing cursor appears under the character you want to edit or erase. NOTE: If necessary, press ENTER to move the flashing cursor to the data and time. 4. Press ERASE to erase an incorrect character, then enter the correct character or press SPACE to add a space. If the date or time is incorrect, move the cursor to the incorrect digit, then enter the correct digit. 5. Press ENTER to store the correct scheduler reminder. DELETING SCHEDULER REMINDERS 1. Recall the schedule reminder you want to delete. 2. Press and hold down ERASE until DELETE? Y/N appears. 3. To delete the reminder, press Y. The scheduler reminder is deleted and memory increases by an amount equal to the size of the deleted reminder. SCHEDULE? and the remaining memory units appear on the display. To keep the reminder, press N. The scheduler reminder remains in memory and on the display. USING THE DAILY ALARM You can set one daily alarm to sound at the same time each day (see "Turning the Daily Alarm On/Off"). No reminder message appears. SETTING THE DAILY ALARM TIME 1. Press ALARM. ALARM and the current alarm time appear. 2. Press ENTER. The first hour digit flashes on the display. 3. Enter the daily alarm time, and press A or P for an AM or PM hour. NOTES: Precede single digit entries with a zero (for example, press 08 05 A to set 8:05 AM). If you make an incorrect entry, press ARROW LEFT or ARROW RIGHT to move to the incorrect entry and correct it. 4. Press ENTER to store the alarm time. ALARM appears on the bottom right of the display. NOTE: If the information you enter is invalid (for example, you enter 15 for the hour), the time you just entered appears on the display with the first digit flashing. Repeat Steps 3-4. TURNING THE DAILY ALARM ON/OFF To turn the daily alarm on, press ALARM until ALARM appears on the display. To turn it off, press ALARM until ALARM disappears from the display. When the alarm is turned on, the EC-378 beeps for 30 seconds at the set time, even if the EC-378 is turned off. To silence the alarm sooner, press any key. NOTES: Because pressing any key turns off the alarm, the alarm might not sound if you are entering information precisely at the alarm time. The alarm sounds at the same time the next day, unless you turn it off. USING THE CALCULATOR BASIC CALCULATIONS Press CALC to use the calculator for arithmetic equations. CALC, and 0. appear on the display. Press the keys in the order they appear in the equation. For example: You press: You see 3+4= 7. 8x3-4= 20. 6/3+2= 4. Press CALC to clear the equation. NOTE: If the result of a calculation has move than 12 digits, or if you try to divide by 0, E (error) appears on the right of the display. To clear the error, press CALC. To square a number, enter the number, then press x and =. For example, to calculate 4 to the square root of 2. You press: You see: 4x= 16. CURRENCY CONVERSIONS Storing the Exchange Rate To store the exchange rate, enter the rate, then press X on the left (alphabetical) side of the keyboard. For example, to store $1 (US dollar) = Y 7.75 (Japanese Yen): You press: You see: 7.75X 7.75 NOTE: The exchange rate you enter stays in memory until you enter a different rate. Converting Currency NOTE: Before you calculate a currency conversion, you must first store the exchange rate for the foreign currency. Press CALC to clear the display between conversion. Then use ARROW UP or ARROW DOWN to perform the next desired conversion.
