Rolodex PCLink (650-0132) Operation - Part 1 Faxback Doc. # 17119 STARTING PC LINK Make sure that you are in the directory which you installed PC link. Type the following commands at the DOS prompt: CD PCLINK PCLINK The PCLink MAIN MENU should appear on the screen. To select one of the items on the MAIN MENU, use the ^ or V cursor keys to highlight the desired choice, and press , or type the highlighted letter. USING PCLINK WITH WINDOWS 3.1 To create a PCLink Icon that will allow you to run PCLink from Windows, you must first enter Windows. Double-click the PIF Editor Icon (Usually found in the MAIN Program Group), and enter the data as shown below. NOTE: This example assumes that PCLink is installed on the C: drive, in a directory named PCLINK. If this is different for your system, change the data accordingly. Be sure that the Exclusive box and Full Screen boxes are checked. After all information has been entered, click File in the upper left corner of the PIP Editor window. Select Save, and enter PCLINK.PIF as the file name. Select File again, but now click Exit. Next click the File menu item in the upper left hand corner of the PROGRAM Manager screen, and the File menu will drop down. Choose New from this menu. The New Program Object box will open. Choose Program Item and click on the OK button. The Program Item Properties window now appears. Type in the information as shown below. This assumes that PCLink is installed in the C: drive, and in a directory called PCLINK. If you are using a different drive, or directory, change the Command Line information accordingly. At this time you may also select an appropriate Icon by clicking the Change Icon button. When finished, click on the OK button and PCLink Icon will appear on the screen in the currently active Program Group. Double click the icon and PCLink will start within Windows. SELECTING FROM MAIN MENU In the MAIN MENU, you can select any of the functions of PCLink. There are two methods for selecting a function: 1. Press the ^ or V cursor key until the function is highlighted, then press . 2. Press the letter that is highlighted in the desired function. To exit PCLink press X, or the key and answer Y to confirm. The first time you enter PCLink, you will be prompted to supply a name for your first cardfile, as well as a description. Select CARDFILE Menu Item 1 lists your card files on the screen. PCLink allows up to 50 card files, and each card file will hold as many records as hard disk space allows. By using the ^ and V cursor keys put the highlighted bar on the card file you wish to open and press . The program will then ask you if you would like to change the card file description. Press or N if you want to keep the description. The cardfile selected will be loaded and you will be returned to the MAIN MENU. If you would like to change the description, press Y and enter the new description. When you have finished, the selected Cardfile will be loaded and you will be returned to the MAIN MENU. If you have a large number of card files, they might not all fit on one screen. View other files by pressing either the key, to see the next page, or the key, to see the previous page, or use the ^ and V cursor keys to scroll through the list of available card files. NOTE: It is not necessary to select a cardfile before executing one of the menu functions, PCLink will prompt you to select a cardfile when entering any function, if one has not already been selected. CREATING NEW CARD FILES To create a Cardfile in the Select Cardfile menu: Press the key. You will then be asked to name the file. Only ALPHANUMERIC characters, such as "A - Z," and "0 - 9", can be used when naming your file. An example of an acceptable cardfile name would be "Numbers". The program WILL NOT allow you to use any other characters or spaces in the cardfile name. The length of the name is limited to eight characters. You will then be asked to give the cardfile a description. Use up to 40 characters in describing the cardfile. This is for your benefit so you know the contents of each cardfile. When finished with the description press , and you will be returned to the MAIN MENU. If no description is desired, just hit . Download CARD FILE Downloading a card file allows you to copy information over to your Electronic ROLODEX File. You can copy entire card files, or selected records from a particular card file. If you have not already selected a card file you will now be prompted to make a selection. After choosing the Downloading function, the program will ask you to make the following selection: Select record type File Marked records Unmarked records Choose the record type by pressing F, M, or U, or by using the < and > cursor keys to highlight the desired choice, then . When finished gathering the data to send, the program will ask which ROLODEX to send the data to: Send data to.. Rolodex 64K Rolodex 128K Rolodex 48K Choose the desired type by using the < and > cursor keys to highlight the desired choice, and press . The Download instructions for the selected ROLODEX File will then be displayed. Following the download instructions as shown on the PC screen carefully will ensure that the download will be completed successfully. If Rolodex 128K was selected, the following instructions will be displayed: Please follow these instructions: 1. Make sure the INFRARED adapter is connected to LPTn 2. Place the INFRARED transmitter to the RIGHT of the ROLODEX File 128K 3. On the ROLODEX File: Push the "Business CARD FILE" Key Then push the "RECEIVE" key 4. On the PC KEYBOARD: Push the "ENTER" key If ROLODEX 64K was selected, the following instructions will be displayed: Please follow these instructions: 1. Make sure the INFRARED adapter is connected to LPTn 2. Place the INFRARED transmitter to the RIGHT of the Rolodex File 64K 3. On the ROLODEX File: Push the "BUSINESS CARD FILE" Key While holding down the "SPACE" key, press "R" 4. Verify that the ROLODEX File displays "INFORMATION IS BEING RECEIVED" If not, repeat step 3 5. On the PC KEYBOARD: Push the "ENTER" key If Rolodex 48K was selected, the following instructions will be displayed: Please follow these instructions: 1. Make sure the INFRARED adapter is connected to LPTn 2. Place the INFRARED transmitter to the RIGHT of the Rolodex File 48K 3. On the ROLODEX File: While holding down the "SPACE" key, press "R" 4. Verify that the ROLODEX File displays "RECEIVER READY" If not, repeat step 3 5. On the PC KEYBOARD: Push the "ENTER" key If the transmission is successful, the Electronic ROLODEX File screen will display: INFORMATION IS BEING SORTED or ALPHABETIZING Depending on the amount of data sent, sorting can take several minutes. At this time, the PC will also indicate that it has finished downloading. The Infrared Adapter cable can now be removed, and work can be resumed on the PC. When the Electronic ROLODEX File has finished sorting the information, one of the records stored will be displayed on the screen. IF the PC is not communicating with the Electronic ROLODEX File, the following message is displayed: INFORMATION DID NOT TRANSFER PLEASE TRY AGAIN Most likely the interface and the Electronic ROLODEX File are not aligned properly so realign them and try again. Not Enough Memory TO Download If, you are not shown a message that there is not enough memory to do the download, you must exit the PCLink program, and type the following command at the DOS prompt: TRANSFER Select the Electronic ROLODEX File type that you want to download to, and follow the on-screen instructions. After downloading is finished, you will be returned to the DOS prompt, and you can re-enter PCLink, if desired.
