128K Electronic Organizer (650-0841) Care And Maintenance Faxback Doc. # 17671 Your Radio Shack EC-359 128K Electronic Organizer with Icon Menu Selection and Expense Manager is an example of superior design and craftsmanship. The following suggestions will help you care for your organizer so you can enjoy it for years. Keep the EC-359 dry. If it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately, Liquids can contain minerals that can corrode electronic circuits. Use and store the EC-359 only in normal temperature environments, and avoid sudden temperature changes. Temperature extremes can shorten the life of electronic devices, damage batteries, and distort or melt plastic parts. Below 32 degrees or above 104 degrees F, the display's response time might slow down or the display might fail completely. This is only temporary. The EC-359 works normally again when its temperature returns to the normal range. Handle the EC-359 gently and carefully. Dropping it can damage the circuit boards and can cause the EC-359 to work improperly. Keep the EC-359 away from dirt and dust, which can cause premature wear of parts. Wipe the EC-359 with a damp cloth occasionally to keep it looking new. Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, or strong detergents to clean the EC-359. NOTE: If the EC-359 is exposed to strong static electrical charges, the display might become dim or or the EC-359 might fail to respond. If this happens, reset the EC-359's display. See "Resetting the Display." Modifying or tampering with the EC-359's internal components can cause a malfunction and might invalidate its warranty. If the EC-359 is not performing as it should, take it to your local Radio Shack store for assistance. RESETTING THE DISPLAY You must reset the EC-359's display if it locks up or does not work properly. NOTE: Resetting the display does not affect any information stored in memory. To reset the display, use a pointed object, such as a straightened paper clip, to press RESET on the back of the EC-359. NOTE: Be sure not to press MENU while pressing RESET to reset the display. Otherwise, the information stored in the EC-359 might be lost. The display shows INITIALIZATION.....PLEASE WAIT 4 SECONDS, then shows the main menu screen. REPLACING THE BATTERIES The EC-359 uses one CR2430 3-volt lithium battery (supplied) for main power and one CR1616 3-volt lithium battery (supplied) for memory backup. Replace the main battery: If the display dims or stops working properly. Whenever the EC-359 displays LOW BATTERY, REPLACE THE BATTERY ASAP. Every year, regardless of how often you use it. Replace the backup battery: If the EC-359 loses stored information in memory. Every 5 years, regardless of how often you use it. Hint: Put a reminder on the Scheduler to let you know when to replace the batteries (see "Using the Scheduler"). WARNING: Never let children play with batteries. Swallowing a lithium battery can be fatal. CAUTIONS: Use only fresh batteries of the required size and type. Always remove old or weak batteries. They can leak chemicals that can destroy electronic circuits. Do not touch batteries to be installed, handle them with a clean cloth. To prevent losing the information stored in the EC-359, do not remove the backup battery and the main battery at the same time, or press any buttons while replacing either battery. Do not inadvertantly press keys by placing unit on its face. Replacing the Main Battery 1. Wait until the EC-359 turns off. 2. Remove the battery by pulling the battery holder straight up until it comes out of the EC-359, see the illustration in Faxback Doc. #17262. 3. Remove the old battery and dispose of it promptly and properly. Caution: do not bury or burn the battery. 4. Install the fresh battery with the positive (+) side facing up. 5. Replace the battery holder. If the display darkens after replacing the main battery, you must reset the display (see "Resetting the Display"). Replacing the Backup Battery 1. Wait until the EC-359 turns off. 2. Use a small Phillips screwdriver to remove the 3 screws holding the back of the EC-359. Then remove the back. 3. Remove the old battery and dispose of it promptly and properly, see illustration in Faxback Doc. #17262. Caution: Do not bury or burn the battery. 4. Slide the fresh battery under the retaining strips with the positive (+) side facing up to install it. 5. Replace the back and the screws. (CS/all-10/27/95)
