Dictionary * Spell Checker (630-0927) Operation Faxback Doc. # 18104 A LOOK AT THE KEYBOARD Your Dictionary Spell Checker's keys might seem confusing at first, but a quick glance at this page should help you understand each key's function. ON/OFF - turns the Dictionary Spell Checker on and off. To conserve battery power, the Dictionary Spell Checker automatically turns off if you do not press any key for about 3 minutes. CLR - clears an entry. SPELL - turns on the spell checker. DICT - turns on the dictionary. CALC - turns on the calculator. PERS DICT - turns on the personal dictionary. Press after SHFT to display the edit menu in the personal dictionary. TEST and ADD - control the flashcard feature. Press ADD to enter a word into flashcard memory from the dictionary; press TEST to recall the entry for your study. <- and -> - move the cursor left (erasing the character under it) or right. Also designates the word you want to look up the definition for using the pick function. (up) and (down arrow) - scroll through the screens. Letter Keys - enter the characters. Press while SHFT is on the display to enter the numbers 1-0 or symbols %, &, or $ while using the personal dictionary. NEXT and PREVIOUS - scroll through the built-in word list. Press NEXT while SHFT is on the display to enter a space while using the personal dictionary. SHFT - activates the second function of the keys while using the personal dictionary. SHFT appears on the display. Press SHFT again so SHFT disappears to return to the first function of the keys. RATE (key X) - enters the exchange rate for currency conversion. ENTR - executes the function. USING THE DICTIONARY Follow these steps to find a definition of a word. 1. Press DICT to enter the dictionary mode. 2. Enter the word you want. For example, to find the definition of the word "intelligence," type INTELLIGENCE. NOTE: The dictionary accepts a British spelling also, but only displays its American spelling. 3. Press ENTR. The first portion of the definition appears on the display. NOTES: The display shows the part of speech in the second line. If the definition is longer than the display limit, (down arrow) appears on the display. Press (down arrow) to see the rest of the definition. 4. If the definition is not the one you want, press ENTR again. The next definition appears on the display. If no more definitions are in the dictionary's memory, the word you originally entered re-appears on the display. NOTES: When you enter a modified word, the dictionary shows the definition of the base word. For example, if you enter WORKED, it displays the definition of WORK. If you are unsure of a word's spelling, enter one or several characters and try pressing ENTR. The dictionary displays the definition for the word in its memory that most closely resembles what you entered. For example, enter ABA, then press ENTR; the definition for ABACUS appears. Press NEXT or PREV to scroll the word list. If you still cannot find the word you want, try using the spell checker (see "Using the Spell Checker"), (see below). Using the Pick Function If you find an unfamiliar word in a definition the Dictionary Spell Checker presents, you can use the pick function to find the definition of that word. Use <- or -> until the first letter of the unfamiliar word flashes. Then press ENTR. The first part of the definition for the word you selected appears on the display. NOTE: Once you go to the definition of the picked word, you must re-enter the original word if you want to go back to its definition. USING THE PERSONAL DICTIONARY In addition to the words stored inside the dictionary, you can add words to your personal dictionary. Or, you can use it to store your friends' names, addresses, phone numbers, or other information. Follow these steps to enter a new word or data. 1. Press PERS DICT. If there are no entries stored, ...NO ENTRIES... appears on the display. Otherwise, the headings for the first two entries appear. 2. Press SHFT, then EDIT. 3. Press N for MAKE NEW ENTRY. 4. Enter your word or data. The first line of the entry becomes the heading. NOTE: The dictionary automatically sorts entries in alphabetical order, so if you store a friend's name, you might want to enter it last name first. 5. Move the cursor (the flashing underline) to the next line using (< ) and (down arrow), and type the rest of your entry. NOTES: You can enter up to 19 characters per line, and up to three lines, for a total of 57 characters. If you enter more than 19 characters in a line, the cursor automatically moves to the next line. To enter numbers or symbols, press SHFT so SHFT appears on the display, then enter the desired number/symbol. Press SHFT again to enter letters; SHFT disappears from the display. Use (<), (>), (up arrow) or (down arrow) to move the cursor to correct an entry error. 6. Press ENTR to save your entry. 7. Repeat Steps 2-6 to store more entries. Looking Up an Entry You can recall the contents of your personal dictionary in two ways, sequential search or index search. Sequential search shows the entries in alphabetical order. Index search recalls the entry that starts with the letter you specify. To recall entries using sequential search: 1. Press PERS DICT. The first two headings appear on the display. 2. Use (down arrow) or (up arrow) to move the pointer to the entry you want to look up. 3. Press ENTR. The full entry appears. Press NEXT or PREV to view the next or previous entry. 4. Press ENTR again to return to the heading display. To recall entries using index search: 1. Press PERS DICT. The first two headings appear on the display. 2. Enter the first character of the entry you want to look up. The pointer moves to the first heading that starts with the specified character. Use (down arrow) to move the pointer to the entry you want to look up, if necessary. 3. Press ENTR to view the full entry. 4. Press ENTR to return to the heading display. Editing an Entry 1. Move the pointer to the heading you want to edit. 2. Press SHFT, then EDIT. 3. Press E for EDIT CURRENT. 4. Use (<), (>), (up arrow) or (down arrow) to move the cursor to the position you want to revise, and enter the correction. 5. Press ENTR. SAVE CHANGES (Y/N)? appears on the display. 6. Press Y to save the change, or N to abandon the change and keep the original entry. Deleting an Entry 1. Move the pointer to the heading you want to delete, using either sequential or index search. 2. Press SHFT, then EDIT. 3. Press D for DELETE CURRENT. ARE YOU SURE (Y/N) ? appears on the display. 4. Press Y to delete the entry. ENTRY DELETED! appears on the display. Or, press N to abandon the deletion. USING THE SPELL CHECKER 1. Press SPELL. 2. Press the letters on the keypad to enter a word the way you think it is spelled. If you press one or more letters you do not want, press (<) to delete as many letters as necessary. Then re-enter the letters you think are correct. If you enter a word that you do not want, press CLR to clear the display. Then re-enter the word you want. 3. Press ENTR. CHECKING WORD-LIST appears on the display while the dictionary searches through the word list. If the word is spelled correctly, the word and CORRECTLY SPELLED appear on the display. If the word is spelled incorrectly, the candidates for the word you might have intended appear on the display. When there are more candidates than the display limits allow, (down arrow) appears on the display. Press (down arrow) for additional similar words. The dictionary adds a period (.) after the last candidate, indicating no more similar words in its memory. NOTE: To view the original word again, press ENTR or SPELL. Using the Missing Letter Function The missing letter function lets you find words even when some of the letters are missing. You can substitute a ? for each missing letter. Your spell checker searches for a list of possible spellings. This feature is great for solving crossword puzzles. 1. Press SPELL. 2. Enter the word, pressing ? for each missing letter. You must supply the first letter of the word or !INVALID WORD! appears. For example, press M???A???. 3. Press ENTR. Your dictionary finds word(s) that match the word you entered. For example, for the entry M???A???, the dictionary displays MADRASES, MAGMATIC, MAGNATES, MAHRATTI, MAILABLE, MALLARDS, with the DOWN ARROW sign indicating more possibilities. Press (down arrow) to display other possibilities. NOTE: If the spell checker cannot find a word that matches, !NO WORDS FOUND! appears above your original entry. USING FLASHCARD MEMORY You can store words into flashcard memory, then have the dictionary randomly display the words. Improve your vocabulary by guessing the definition for each word. To store a word into memory: 1. Press DICT. 2. Enter the word you want to store into flashcard memory. 3. Press ENTR. 4. Press ADD. THIS WORD HAS BEEN SAVED appears on the display. NOTE: If you already saved the same word, the display shows THIS WORD WAS PREVIOUSLY SAVED. 5. Press CLR or DICT, then repeat Steps 2-4 to enter more words. To recall the words in memory: 1. In any mode, press TEST. The dictionary randomly picks a stored word and displays TELL THE MEANING OF '(the selected word)'. 2. Try telling the meaning. If you can, press TEST to display the next word at random. If you cannot, press ENTR to display the definition. The dictionary stores up to 100 words in the order you entered them. If you enter more than 100 words, the 101st word entered overwrites the first, the 102nd overwrites the second, and so on. To sequentially recall the words, press (down arrow) after you press TEST. Each time you press (down arrow), the dictionary displays the next word in memory until you reach the end of the list. USING THE CALCULATOR You can use the calculator mode to do standard arithmetic, memory, and percent calculations. press CALC to display 0. The functions marked in yellow work in the calculator mode without pressing SHFT. The following keys work only in the calculator mode: Press CLR or C (letter A key) once to cancel the last entry, or twice to clear the display for the next calculation (so CALC: 0 appears). Press +/- to toggle between a positive and negative value on the display. NOTE: If a calculation result exceeds 8 digits, or if you try to divide by 0, E (error) appears. If E appears, press CLR or C to clear the display. Standard Calculations (+, -, X, /) For standard calculations, press the keys in the order they appear in the arithmetic operation. The number that follows CALC: on the upper part of display shows how many numbers you entered. Memory Calculations The memory calculation feature lets you easily do multistep calculations. Use these keys for memory calculations: Press MC to clear the memory. Press M+ to total a calculation and add the total to memory. Press MR to recall (display) the value in memory. M appears at the middle of the display when a value is stored in memory. M disappears when you clear the memory. Percent Calculations You can do percent calculations as shown in the following examples: To calculate: You press You see What is 12% of 150? 150 x 12% 18. USING THE CONVERSION FUNCTION Your dictionary can convert between currencies and between English and metric measurement units. Setting the Exchange Rate You need to set the exchange rate before you do a currency conversion. Follow these steps to set the exchange rate. 1. Press CALC. 2. Enter the local currency amount that is equal to the unit of your home currency. For example, suppose you are in London and want to enter the rate for Dollar-Pound conversion, and the current rate is US$1=(pound symbol) 0.64, you need to enter 0.64 as the conversion rate. 3. Press RATE (X & key) to store the exchange rate. NEW EXCHANGE RATE and the rate you just entered briefly appear on the display. Converting Currencies or Measurements Follow these steps to convert between currencies or between English and metric measurements. 1. Press CALC. 2. Enter the value to convert. 3. For currency conversions, press (down arrow) or (>) until TO HOME CURRENCY appears, or press (up arrow) or (<) until TO LOCAL CURRENCY appears. For measurement conversions, display the conversion you want by pressing either (down arrow) or (>), or (up arrow) or (<).
