EC-358 Personal Data Directory/Clock/Scheduler (650-0867) Operation - Part 2 Faxback Doc. # 18500 SCHEDULE ALARMS You can set schedule alarms to remind you of important events. For each alarm, you must enter a reminder message. The message can be up to 100 characters long. At the set time, the alarm sounds for 20 seconds and the corresponding message appears. To silence the alarm sooner, press any key. NOTES: If the EC-358 is off, it automatically turns on at the schedule alarm time. Because pressing any key turns off the alarm, the alarm might not sound and the alarm message might not appear if you enter information at a schedule alarm time. Also, if the alarm message appears while you enter information, the information you enter might not be saved. Entering a Schedule Alarm Follow these steps to set a schedule alarm. 1. Press STORE. ENTR MESSAGE and the amount of storage still available appears. 2. Press ALARM. The display shows the current date and time, and the cursor appears below the date's first flashing digit. 3. Enter the schedule alarm date and time. For the AM/PM format, enter the month first. For the 24-hour format, enter the day of month first. After you enter the time, the cursor returns to the date's first digit. 4. If you are using the AM/PM format, press A or P to specify AM or PM. 5. Press STORE. The display shows ENTR MESSAGE and the date and time you entered. NOTE: If you enter invalid information, the display shows the previous date and time setting, and the cursor returns to the date. 6. Enter the reminder message you want the display to show at the schedule alarm time. To enter a space, press SPACE. To erase the last character entered, press ERASE/C/CE. NOTE: You must enter a message, or the schedule alarm is not set. 7. Press STORE. WAIT briefly appears. Then the display shows the schedule alarm date, time, and message. NOTES: FULL appears on the display if no storage space is available. Delete outdated directory/memo records or schedule alarm messages to free additional storage space. See "Deleting a Directory/Memo Record" (above) or "Deleting a Schedule Alarm." (below) If the message has more characters than the display can show at one time, repeatedly press or press and hold down = SCR so you can see the remaining characters. To change the date, time, or message, see "Editing a Schedule Alarm." (below) Recalling a Schedule Alarm The EC-358 stores schedule alarms in chronological order. Follow these steps to recall a schedule alarm. 1. Press ALARM. The earliest schedule alarm appears. NOTE: If you have just entered a schedule alarm, the display shows the alarm that follows the new one rather than showing the earliest schedule alarm. 2. To recall other schedule alarms, repeatedly press ALARM to scroll forward or .SBW to scroll backward through the schedule alarms. When NO FILE appears, press ALARM to begin scrolling forward from the earliest alarm. 3. If the message has more characters than the display can show at one time, repeatedly press or press and hold down = SCR so you can see the remaining characters. Editing a Schedule Alarm NOTE: If the message requires more characters than you originally entered, you must delete the schedule alarm and re-enter it. Edit a schedule alarm as follows: 1. If the schedule alarm you want to edit does not already appear on the display, recall it as described in "Recalling a Schedule Alarm." (above) 2. Press << EDIT. The alarm's date and time appear, and the cursor appears below the date's first digit. NOTE: In the AM/PM format, the month comes first. In the 24-hour format, the day of the month comes first. If the date and time are correct, but you want to change the message, go to Step 4. 3. To change the date or time, press << or >> to move the cursor to the digit you want to change. Then enter the correct digit. If you are using the AM/PM format, press A or P to specify AM or PM. 4. Press STORE. The alarm date and time appear on the bottom row. The top row shows the alarm message, and the cursor appears beneath the first character. 5. If the message is correct, go to Step 6. To change the message, press << or >> to move the cursor to the character you want to change. To replace a character, enter the correct character. To delete a character, press ERASE/C/CE; the remaining characters shift to the left. 6. Press STORE. The display shows the new alarm date, time, and message. Deleting a Schedule Alarm Follow these steps to delete a schedule alarm. 1. If the schedule alarm you want to delete does not already appear on the display, recall it as described in "Recalling a Schedule Alarm." (above) 2. Press and hold down ERASE/C/CE for about 5 seconds. WAIT briefly appears. Then NO FILES appears to show that the schedule alarm is deleted. TIME/STOPWATCH You can use the timer to count down so an alarm sounds at the end of a set time. You can also use it to count up like a stopwatch, which lets you measure the length of an event. The timer can count up or down for up to 23 hours, 59 minutes, and 59 seconds. NOTES: The EC-358 does not automatically turn off when the timer is running. When the timer counts down to 00-00 00, it begins counting down again from 23-59 59. When the timer counts up to 23- 59 59, it begins counting up again from 00-00 00. To stop the timer, press 6 STOP or TIMER. You cannot run the timer while using any other feature, because pressing TIME, TIMER, ALARM, STORE or RECALL stops the timer and resets it to 00-00 00. Using the Countdown Timer Follow these steps to use the countdown timer. 1. Press Timer. Timer and 00-00 00 appear on the display. 2. Press SET. The cursor appears beneath the hour's first digit. 3. Enter the number of hours and minutes you want the timer to run before it sounds. For example, if you want the alarm to sound in an hour and a half, enter 01-30. NOTE: The minimum time you can set the timer for is 1 minute. 4. Press SET to store the displayed time. NOTE: If you enter a number higher than 23 for the hours or 59 for the minutes, the cursor returns to the first digit, and the display returns to 00-00 00. 5. Press 3 C.DN. The timer begins counting down, and the display shows the remaining time. At the end of the specified time, an alarm sounds for about 30 seconds, and the display counts down from 23-59 59. To silence the alarm sooner, press any key. To temporarily stop the countdown, press 6 STOP. To continue the count-down, press 3 C.DN. To stop the countdown and reset the display to 00-00 00, press TIMER. NOTE: To change from count-down to count-up timing, press 9 C.UP. The timer begins counting up from the displayed time. Using the Stopwatch Follow these steps to use the timer as a stopwatch. 1. Press TIMER. TIMER and 00-00 00 appear on the display. 2. Press 9 C.UP. The timer begins counting up, and the display shows the elapsed time. To temporarily stop the count, press 6 STOP. To continue the count, press 9 C.UP. To stop the count and reset the display to 00-00 00, press TIMER. NOTE: To change from count-up to count-down timing, press 3 C.DN. The timer begins counting down from the displayed time. CALCULATOR You can do standard arithmetic calculations, memory calculations, and percent calculations. NOTES: Press CALC to begin using the calculator. Press ERASE/C/CE to cancel the last entry. Press ERASE/C/CE until 0. appears to clear the display for the next calculation. If the result of the calculation is more than 12 digits long, or if you attempt to divide by 0, E (error) appears. If E appears, press ERASE/C/CE to clear the display. Standard Calculations For standard calculations, press keys in the order they appear in the arithmetic operation. For example: You press: You see: 3 + 4 = 7. 8 x 3 - 4 = 20. Memory Calculations The memory calculation feature lets you easily do multi-step calculations. Use the following keys for memory calculations: Press MC to clear the memory. Press M+ to add the result of the calculation to the value in memory. Press M- to subtract the result from the value in memory. Press MR to recall (display) the value in memory. For example: You press: You see: 4 x 5 = M+ 20. 28 + 2 = M+ 30. 7 - 2 = M- 5. 75/5 + M+ 15. MR 60. NOTES: M appears at the top of the display when you store a value in memory. M disappears when you clear the memory. You cannot store the results of percent calculations in memory. The EC-358 clears the memory each time you press CALC, each time you use any feature other than the calculator, and each time the EC-358 turns off. Percent Calculations Do percent calculations as shown in the following examples: What is 12% of 150 ? You press: You see: 150 x 12% 18. What percentage of 880 is 660 ? You press: You see: 660/880% 75. What is 15% discounted from 82 ? You press: You see: 82 - 15% 69.7 Add 8% to 65 You press: You see: 65 + 8% 70.2 ACCOUNT MANAGER The account manager lets you keep track of the current balance in up to six accounts. Although the keys are designed for three bank (B B1, H B2, N B3) and three credit card (C C1, I C2, O C3) accounts, you can store any type of account balance in any of the six locations. The account manager feature requires the security code. The security code is set to 000 at the factory. If you want to change the security code, see "Security Code." (below) Follow these steps to enter or update an account balance. 1. Press CALC. Then press P ACCT. CODE -- appears. 2. Enter the security code. If you have not changed the security code, enter 000. If you have changed the security code, enter the code you changed it to. After you enter the third digit of the security code, ACCOUNT and the total balance for all six accounts appear on the display. 3. Press one of the account keys (B B1, H B2, N B3, C C1, I C2, O C3). The display shows the account's current balance. 4. Enter the amount and press D DEP to record a deposit or to enter a positive starting balance. Enter the amount and press J WHD to record a withdrawal or to enter a negative starting balance. The display shows the new account balance. To display the new total balance for all the accounts, press P ACCT. CURRENCY CONVERTER You can convert from or to US dollars and each of three other currencies. Entering Exchange Rates Follow these steps to enter the foreign exchange rates. 1. Press CALC. 2. Press YIEX SET. ENTER RATE appears. 3. Enter the amount of the currency that is equal to 1 US dollar. To correct an error, press ERASE/C/CE and enter the correct exchange rate. 4. Press A EX1, G EX2, or M EX3 to store the exchange rate in one of the exchange rate memory locations. 5. Repeat Steps 2-4 for each additional exchange rate. Store each exchange rate in a different memory location. Converting from US Dollars Follow these steps to convert from US currency. 1. Press CALC. 2. Enter the amount of US currency. To correct an error, press ERASE/C/CE and enter the correct amount. 3. Press the key (A EX1, G EX2, or M EX3) for the location the foreign exchange rate is stored in. The display shows the amount in the foreign currency. 4. Repeat Steps 1-3 for each other currency you want to convert to. Converting to US Dollars Follow these steps to convert to US dollars. 1. Press CALC. 2. Enter the amount of the currency. To correct an error, press ERASE/C/CE and enter the correct amount. 3. Press V EX REV. CALC. REV appears. 4. Press the key (A EX1, G EX2, or M EX3) for the location the exchange rate is stored in. The display shows the amount in US dollars. 5. Repeat Steps 1-4 for each currency you want to convert from. DECISION-MAKER GAME Follow these steps to play the decision-maker game. 1. If the display shows the date and time, go to Step 2. If the display does not show the date and time, press TIME. 2. Press D DEP. DECISION-YES, DECISION-NO, or CONSIDERING appears. To play the decision-maker game again, press D DEP as often as desired. The display randomly displays any of the three answers. SECURITY CODE The account manager feature automatically requires the security code. This prevents unauthorized entry or changing of your account balance. You can also lock directory/memo records and schedule alarms to prevent others from viewing or changing the stored information. When you recall a locked directory/memo record, the display shows only the first six characters of the record. To view the rest of the record, you must enter the security code. When you recall a locked schedule alarm, the display shows only the alarm date and time. To view the alarm message, you must enter the security code. Changing the Security Code The security code is preset to 000. You can change it to any other three-digit code. Follow these steps to change the security code. 1. If the date and time do not appear, press TIME. 2. Press LOCK. CODE -- appears. 3. Enter the security code. The security code is set to 000 at the factory. If you have not changed the security code, enter 000. If you have changed the security code, enter the code you set. CODE and the current security code appear. NOTE: If CODE -- remains on the display, the EC-358 does not recognize the code you entered. If you cannot remember the code, you must re-initialize the EC-358 so it recognizes the preset code (000). Initializing the EC-358 also clears all information from memory. See "Initializing the EC-358" (above) for instructions. 4. Enter the desired three-digit security code. CODE and the new security code appear. 5. Press LOCK. The time and date display returns. Locking a Directory/Memo Record You can lock a record after you enter it, or you can recall a record & then lock it. While the record appears on the display, press and hold down LOCK until LOCK and the phone number appear. Then release LOCK. After a few seconds, the first six characters of the record and -- appear. Recalling a Locked Directory/Memo Record Follow these steps to recall a locked record. 1. Recall the record as described in "Recalling a Directory/Memo Record." (above). The first six characters of the record and -- appear on the display. 2. Press and hold down LOCK for about 2 seconds. CODE -- appears. 3. Enter the security code. The display shows the first 12 characters of both parts of the record. Locking a Schedule Alarm You can lock a schedule alarm when you enter it, or you can recall a schedule alarm and lock it. While the schedule alarm appears on the display, press and hold down LOCK until LOCK and the alarm time and date appear. Then release LOCK. After a few seconds, CODE and the alarm time and date appear. Recalling a Locked Schedule Alarm Follow these steps to recall a locked schedule alarm. 1. Recall the schedule alarm as described in "Schedule Alarms." (above) CODE and the alarm time and date appear. 2. Enter the security code. The alarm message appears. Unlocking a Record or Alarm If you no longer want to enter the security code to recall a record or alarm, unlock the record or alarm as follows. 1. Recall the locked record or alarm as described earlier in this section. 2. When the record or alarm appears, press and hold down LOCK for about 2 seconds. -UNLOCK- appears to show that the record or alarm is unlocked. (JC 11/14/95)
