My Private Diary (650-0836A) Operation Faxback Doc. # 19527 ABOUT YOUR DIARY The time/date display and the face appear when you turn on the diary (by pressing ON/OFF). To view the main menu, press MENU. The main menu screen lets you select any of the diary's eight functions: Phone Directory Calculator Scheduler Alarm Match-Maker Fortune-Teller Lock/Unlock Clock To select a function, repeatedly press DIRECTIONAL Arrow until that function's picture flashes. Then press ENTER. To conserve power, the diary automatically turns off if you do not press a button for about 2 minutes. The diary displays FULL when memory is full. You must delete records before you can store new ones. SETTING/VIEWING THE DATE AND TIME The diary displays the time, month, date, and day of the week when you turn it on. To view the time while using the diary, select (CLOCK symbol) from the menu. Follow these steps to set the date and time. 1. Turn on the diary or choose (CLOCK symbol) from the menu. The diary displays the set date and time. 2. Press and hold EDIT until the left digit of the date flashes. 3. Press M/D to have the diary display dates as month-day-year or press D/M to display dates as day-month-year. Then enter the current date and time. NOTES: The diary normally shows dates as day-month-year. This is how dates are given in some other countries. However, in the US, dates are normally given as month-day-year. Precede all single-digit entries with a zero. For example, enter the fifth day of the month as 05. 4. Press A or P to set the clock to AM or PM. A or P appears on the display. 5. Use UP/DOWN arrow to select the current day of the week. 6. When everything is set, press ENTER. NOTE: If you enter an invalid date (for example, 32 for the day or 15 for the month) and press ENTER, the diary automatically returns to the old time and date. Repeat Steps 3-5 to enter the correct time and date. TURNING THE KEY TONE ON AND OFF The diary beeps each time you press a key. To turn off the key tone, press (MUSIC note) when the diary displays the date and time. Press (MUSIC note) again to turn the key tone back on. USING THE PHONE DIRECTORY You can enter a person's name, address and telephone number into each telephone record and add a fun face next to it. You can store up to 100 telephone numbers. Each phone number can be up to 12 digits and each name/address entry can be up to 64 characters. To use the phone directory, choose (PHONE symbol) from the menu and press ENTER. Entering Telephone Records 1. Press RECORD. The diary displays NAME?. 2. Enter the person's name and any other information you want to keep (such as an address). NOTES: Information is stored in alphabetical order. To make it easier to search for information later, enter last names first. If numbers are in the information, press SHIFT before entering each number. See "Adding a Fun Face" to store a face along with the name and phone number. (BELOW) 3. Press ENTER. The diary displays TEL?. 4. Enter the phone number with the number buttons, then press ENTER. The diary displays SEARCH NAME. NOTE: You can only enter numbers and the dash when you are entering a phone number, and you do not have to press SHIFT before the numbers in this step. Recalling Telephone Records Choose (PHONE symbol) from the menu and press ENTER. The diary displays SEARCH NAME. Use UP/DOWN to scroll through the telephone records. You can also search for a telephone record by a person's name. When the diary displays SEARCH NAME, enter the first few letters (up to 8) of the name you are looking for. Then press DOWN arrow. The diary displays the first record that starts with these letters. NOTES: If there is no matching record, the diary displays the next entry in alphabetical order. If you enter more text than will fit on the display, press < or > arrow to see the rest of the text. Editing Telephone Records Follow these steps to correct or change a telephone record. 1. Recall the telephone record you want to edit. 2. Press EDIT. The first letter of the name flashes. 3. Use < or > arrow to select the character you want to edit. 4. Press DELETE to delete a character. Type to insert new characters. Press ENTER when you are finished. The first digit of the phone number flashes. 5. Type the correct phone number over the old one. You can also delete the the whole number by pressing DELETE. 6. Press ENTER when you are finished editing. Deleting Telephone Records 1. Recall the telephone record you want to delete. 2. Press and hold DELETE for 2 seconds. DELETE? Y/N appears. 3. If you want to delete the record, press Y. Otherwise, press N. ADDING A FUN FACE You can add a different fun face to each record. Follow these steps. 1. While storing a record, after you enter a person's name, do not press ENTER. 2. Press (FACE symbol). A face flashes. 3. Press (DOWN arrow). Then use < or > arrow to choose the desired eyebrows. For a girl, choose high eyebrows; for a boy, choose low eyebrows. 4. Press (DOWN arrow) again to select the hair style. Use < or > arrow to select a long or short hair style. 5. Press (DOWN arrow) again to select the eyes. There are four choices. Use < or > arrow to select the desired one. 6. Press (DOWN arrow) again to select the mouth. Use < or > arrow to select one that is smiling, laughing, or sad. 7. Press (DOWN arrow) again to select a face with or without dimples. Use < or > arrow to choose. 8. Press (DOWN arrow) again to see the result. To make a change, press (DOWN arrow) to repeat the process. When you are happy with the face, press ENTER to store it and return to storing the phone number. Deleting a Fun Face 1. Recall the telephone record and press EDIT. 2. Press (FACE symbol). Then press (DOWN arrow) until the face disappears. 3. Repeatedly press ENTER until the diary displays SEARCH NAME. USING THE CALCULATOR To use the calculator, choose (CALCULATOR symbol) in the menu and press ENTER. For standard calculations, press the keys in the order they appear on paper. For example, press 2 + 3 =. The answer appears after you press =. For square calculations, such as 4 (squared), press 4 x = NOTES: If you enter the wrong function symbol (+, -, x, divide), simply press the correct one to replace it. Press C/CE once to cancel the last entry. To clear the display for the next calculation, press C/CE twice. If you try to make an invalid calculation (like dividing by zero), the calculator displays E. Press C/CE twice and start your calculation over. USING THE SCHEDULER Your diary lets you organizer and store your reminders into four types or categories: Diary, Birthdays, Things-to-do, and Homework. You can also choose to have the dairy sound its alarm and display the stored message at the set time and date to remind you. Select (DIARY symbol) from the menu, then press ENTER. Entering Reminder Messages 1. When the diary displays SEARCH SCH, press RECORD. 2. The diary displays SELECT and the four scheduler pictures. Diary Birthdays Things-to-do Homework Select the picture for your message using < and >. Then press ENTER. 3. The diary displays MESSAGE?. Type your message (up to 64 characters). Then press ENTER. The diary displays TIME? and the current time and date. 4. Change the time and date as necessary. NOTES: The diary sounds an alarm at the set time and date as a reminder if you turn on the alarm (see "Using the Alarm"). (BELOW) For a diary entry, you need only change the date when you write a diary entry for a previous day. You need not change the time. For a birthday entry, enter the time when you want to be reminded of the birthday. 5. When everything is set, press ENTER. The message is stored. The diary displays SEARCH SCH. Recalling a Reminder Message The diary stores reminder messages in order of their dates. The message with the most recent date appears first. When the diary displays SEARCH SCH., use UP or Down arrow to scroll through the reminder messages. You can also search for a reminder message by its date. While the diary display SEARCH SCH., press ENTER. The diary displays SEARCH DATE. Enter the date of the message you are looking for. Then press ENTER again. The diary displays the first reminder message for that day. NOTE: If you enter a long message, you can only see first 12 characters. To view the rest, press < or >. Editing Reminder Messages To correct or change a reminder message, follow these steps. 1. Recall the message you want to edit. 2. Press EDIT. The first letter of the message flashes. 3. Use < or > to select the letter you want to edit. 4. Press DELETE to delete a character. Type to insert new characters. Press ENTER when you are finished. The time and date appear. 5. Change the time and date, if needed. Press ENTER when you are finished. The diary returns to SEARCH SCH. Deleting Reminder Messages 1. Recall the message you want to delete. 2. Press and hold DELETE for 2 seconds. The diary displays DELETE? Y/N. 3. To delete the message, press Y. Otherwise, press N. USING THE ALARM When the alarm is on, the diary beeps for 20 seconds at the set time (even if the diary is off). Press a key to silence the alarm sooner. The alarm sounds at the same time the next day, unless you turn it off. NOTES: Since pressing a key turns off the alarm, the alarm might not sound if you enter information precisely at the set alarm time. If you have entered a time and date for a reminder message and turn on the alarm, the alarm sounds at that time. To use the alarm, choose (BELL symbol) from the menu and press ENTER. 1. When ALARM? appears on the display, press and hold EDIT until the first digit of the time flashes. 2. Enter the desired alarm time. 3. To turn on the alarm, press (BELL symbol). O appears beside the alarm time. To turn off the alarm, press the symbol again. 4. Press ENTER when you finish. The diary returns to the time and date. When the alarm is turned on, the diary displays O. PLAYING MATCH-MAKER Match-Maker tells how compatible you are with someone, based on your birth dates. 1. To select Match-Maker, choose (HEART symbol) from the menu and press ENTER. BIRTHDAY? appears. 2. Type in your birthday and press ENTER. PARTNER? appears. 3. Type in the other person's birthday, then press ENTER. PLEASE WAIT appears, then your compatibility level appears. There are 10 levels of compatibility. The more hears you get, the more compatible you are with your partner. PLAYING FORTUNE TELLER The diary can tell you your level of good fortune on a certain day. 1. Select the fortune teller by choosing (CRYSTAL BALL symbol), then press ENTER. BIRTHDAY? appears. 2. Type in your birthday and press ENTER. TARGET DATE? appears. 3. Type in the date for when you want to check your fortune, and press ENTER. PLEASE WAIT appears, then your fortune level and a number appear. There are 10 levels of fortune. The more stars you get, the more luck you are going to have. USING THE SECRET PASSWORD The diary's secret password lets you keep others from reading your phone records and scheduler. When you set a secret password, you must enter it before you can use these functions. Protecting Your Records 1. Choose (KEY symbol), then press ENTER. LOCK appears. 2. Enter a 4-number secret password. Press ENTER again to store the password. CAUTION: Be sure to use a secret password you can remember. You can also write the password down in a secret place. If you forget your password, you have to delete everything you stored (see "Resetting the Memory") to use your diary again. (See Faxback Doc. # 19528.). Unprotecting Your Records Once you enter a secret password, you must type in your password to unlock the diary when you want to use the phone directory, scheduler, or change or remove the password. When you have protected your records, UNLOCK appears on the display if you choose (DIARY OR PHONE symbol). Type in your secret password and press ENTER to see your records. You can also unlock your records by choosing (KEY symbol) and then entering your password. (JC 1/15/96)
