Whenever you are viewing any other screen, you can always press MENU to return to the main menu. Main Menu Menu Icons 1. Telephone Directory Business and School Mode 2. Telephone Directory Personal Mode 3. Schedule Mode 4. Calendar Mode 5. Secret Memory Area 6. Magic Beam Mode 7. Calculator Mode 8. Conversion Mode 9. Alarm Mode 10. Data Memo "Diary" Mode 11. Fortune Telling Mode 12. Match Maker Mode Changing Modes To change modes: 1. Display the main menu. 2. The icon of the current mode is highlighted on the display. Use UP ARROW, DOWN ARROW, LEFT ARROW, and RIGHT ARROW to select another menu icon. 3. When you have highlighted the mode you wish to select, press EXE. To enter the Timekeeping Mode, press TIME. To enter the Remote Control Modes, press REMOTE CONTROLLER. You cannot select these modes from the main menu. Using the FUNCTION Key To view the function menu for the highlighted mode, press FUNCTION. To select a function: 1. Use UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW to highlight the function you want to choose. 2. Press EXE. If another function menu appears, repeat Steps 1 and 2. To backstep to a previous display, press FUNCTION. To exit the function menu, press AC/ON. Setting the System Language Secret Sender can produce display messages in any one of ten languages: English, Spanish, Italian, German, French, Danish, Swedish, Dutch, Finnish, and Portuguese. All of the display messages shown in this manual are in English. Fortune Telling and Match Maker mode messages can be displayed only when the display message language is set to English. To set the system to another language: 1. Display the main menu. 2. Press FUNCTION, then use UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW to highlight "Language." Press EXE. Also, note the word "Language" is displayed in each language. in Danish "Sprog" in German "Sprache" in English "Language" in Spanish "Idioma" in French "Langue" in Italian "Lingua" in Dutch "Taal" in Portuguese "Idioma" in Finnish "Kieli" in Swedish "Sprak" 3. Use UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW to highlight the language you want. Press EXE. The desired language appears on the display, then the Secret Sender returns to the main menu. To Adjust the Display Contrast 1. Press MENU to display the main menu. 2. To darken the figures on the display, press UP ARROW. To make them lighter, press DOWN ARROW. To Switch the Key Input Tone On or Off. 1. Press MENU to display the main menu. 2. Use UP ARROW, DOWN ARROW, LEFT ARROW, and RIGHT ARROW to highlight SYMBOL. Press EXE. The home time appears on the display. 3. Press FUNCTION. Then use DOWN ARROW to highlight "Sound." Press EXE. 4. Use DOWN ARROW to highlight "Key Tone." Use LEFT ARROW and RIGHT ARROW to switch the key tone on and off. Press EXE. Entering Data You can enter letters, symbols, and other characters in the Telephone Directory Mode. Schedule Mode, Data Memo "Diary" Mode, Conversion Mode, and Magic Beam Mode. You can enter numbers in all modes. Entering Letters and Numbers Press the keys marked with the alphabetic and numeric characters that you want to enter. Each key is used for two different characters. Press the ALPHA/NUM key to switch between alphabetic and numeric input. Example: SYMBOL ALPHA mode : R NUM mode : 4 When Secret Sender is in alphabetic mode, "A" is shown on the display. In numeric mode, "N" is shown. Switching Between Upper- and Lower- Case Letters The unit's default setting uses lower-case letters. To type a single upper-case letter, press SHIFT before typing the letter. An "S" will appear on the display while the keys are shifted to upper case. If you want to type many upper-case (capitalized) letters, press FUNCTION; then use UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW to highlight "CAPS;" then press EXE. When "CAPS" has been selected, "CAPS" appears on the display. To return to lower-case letters, perform the same operation again to cancel "CAPS." "CAPS" disappears from the display. To type a single lower-case letter while the display indicates that "CAPS" are in use, press SHIFT before typing the letter. Entering Symbols and Other Characters To type a period, or +, -, x, /, and %, set Secret Sender to the numeric mode and press the keys marked with the symbols you wish to type. To enter a space, press SPACE. Entering Symbols and Letters with the Function Menu. Select the "Symbols" option on the function menu to use any of the symbols and letters: Here's how to type these symbols and letters: 1. Enter the desired mode. 2. Press FUNCTION. Use UP ARROW to highlight "Symbols." Press EXE. 3. Use UP ARROW, DOWN ARROW, LEFT ARROW and RIGHT ARROW to highlight the symbol or letter you want to use. 4. Press EXE. There is more than one screen of choices; if you want to change screens to find the character quickly, use UP ARROW and DOWN ARROW to change screens. Simply use the SHIFT key or select "CAPS,". If you use a CODE key with a character not shown in the table above, it will simply produce that character as it normally appears. Entering Icons (Schedule Mode Only) There are 36 icons available for use only in Schedule Mode. To use one of them: 1. Enter the Schedule Mode. 2. Press FUNCTION. Then use UP ARROW to highlight "Icons." Press EXE. 3. Use UP ARROW, DOWN ARROW, LEFT ARROW, and RIGHT ARROW to highlight the icon you want to use. Use UP ARROW and DOWN ARROW to change screens. 4. Press EXE. The icon you selected appears on the display. Changing Lines To change to the next line while entering data, press SHIFT, then LEFT ARROW. A "LEFT ARROW SYMBOL" will appear on the display. Rewriting Something You Have Just Typed Use UP ARROW, DOWN ARROW, LEFT ARROW, and RIGHT ARROW to move the cursor to a character you want to change, then simply type over it. To Delete a Character 1. Use UP ARROW, DOWN ARROW, LEFT ARROW and RIGHT ARROW to move the cursor to the character you want to delete. 2. Press SHIFT. 3. Press LEFT ARROW (DEL) to backspace over the character(s) you want to delete. To Insert a Character 1. Use UP ARROW, DOWN ARROW, LEFT ARROW, and RIGHT ARROW to move the cursor to wherever you wish to insert a character. 2. Press SHIFT. 3. Press RIGHT ARROW (INS). A single space will appear at the cursor position. 4. Type the character you want to insert. Timekeeping Mode You may have noticed the HOME TIME/WORLD TIME key on Secret Sender. We'll refer to it simply as the TIME key through out this manual. Home Time shows you the current date and time where you live, while World Time displays the current date and time in one of 30 time zones around world. The Timekeeping Mode also lets you specify any of three formats for the date. Entering the Timekeeping Mode To enter the Timekeeping Mode, press TIME. Whenever you press TIME, the display switches between the Home Time and World Time screens. If you have highlighted a day in the Calendar Mode, when it appears on the Home Time screen, it will be enclosed in << >>. World Time Before making any changes in any other time and date settings, be sure your Home Time zone is set correctly. Setting the Home Time Zone The initial Home Time zone setting produced by the all-reset operation (see page 14) is known around the world as Greenwich Mean Time or Universal Time Coordinate. It is the time zone that includes London, England. If you live in any other time zone, you'll probably want to change the Home Time zone setting. To change the Home Time zone: 1. Press TIME until the display shows the Home Time. 2. Press FUNCTION. Then use DOWN ARROW to highlight "Zone Change." Press EXE. The display flashes the current setting for the Home Time zone. 3. Use LEFT ARROW and RIGHT ARROW to choose another Home Time zone. The unit will cycle through all possible Home Time zones in the sequence shown in the city code table. 4. When the display shows the city code for the Home Time zone you want to select, press EXE. Setting the Date and Time To set the date and time 1. Press TIME until the display shows Home Time. Be sure you are not on World Time. 2. Press FUNCTION. Then use UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW to highlight "Time Set." Press EXE. The hour digit is flashing allowing you to change the hour setting. 3. Type in the current time and date. Let's say it is 10:30 AM, on August 9, 1994. Type in: 1 0 3 0 0 8 0 9 1 9 9 4. 4. Use LEFT ARROW or RIGHT ARROW to cause each detail of the time and date setting to flash, allowing you to change just that detail. 5. If you are using the 12-hour time format, be sure to specify AM or PM by pressing AM/PM. 6. After properly setting all details of the time and date, press EXE. (Pressing EXE resets the seconds count to 00.) To change the date format: 1. Press TIME until the display shows the Home Time. 2. Press FUNCTION. Then use UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW to highlight "Date Format." Press EXE. 3. Use UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW to highlight either "Month/Day/Year," "Day/Month/Year," or "Year/Month/Day." These determine the order in which Secret Sender will always show the date. When you have chosen the setting you prefer, press EXE. Setting the World Time Zone The initial World Time zone setting produced by the all-reset operation (see page 14) is U.S. Eastern Standard Time. It is the time zone that includes New York City. To change the World Time zone: 1. Be sure you have already set the Home Time. 2. Press TIME until the display shows World Time. 3. Use LEFT ARROW or RIGHT ARROW to cycle among all of the possible city codes denoting different World Time zones. Zones cycle through the sequence shown in the city code table on page 39. The time setting for your World Time zone is automatically calculated, based on the Home Time setting. Other Time and Date Functions To switch between 12-hour timekeeping (using AM and PM) and 24-hour timekeeping (using numbers from 13 to 23 for PM hours): 1. Press TIME to display either the Home Time or World Time. 2. Press FUNCTION. Then use UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW to highlight "12/24 Hours." Press EXE. To switch to or from Daylight Saving Time: 1. Press TIME to display either Home Time or World Time, whichever you wish to change to or from Daylight Saving Time. 2. Press FUNCTION. Then press UP ARROW to highlight "DST ON/OFF." Then press EXE. When Daylight Saving Time is set, the "DST" is set, the "DST" indicator appears as shown. (br/all-12/09/94)
