EC-364 (650-0833) Magic Beam Mode Faxback Doc. # 3617 With the Magic Beam Mode you can exchange messages with another unit using infrared light. This means that messages are sent and received without actually connecting two units. You can input the message to send, or use one of the 10 preset messages you prepare in advance. You can even send Telephone Directory data to another unit. Important! Note that you can only perform Magic Beam Mode operations with another Secret Sender unit (as of March 1994). Entering the Magic Beam Mode (Sender and Receiver) Be sure that the two units being used for communication are within eight meters of each other. Also, note that the angle between the two units can be up to 40 degrees (in a room lit by fluorescent lighting to a level of 500 lux). These two steps must be performed on both the sending and the receiving unit. 1. Highlight the Magic Beam Mode icon on the main menu. 2. Press EXE. "Message?" appears on the display asking you what text you want to input. There are three different types of data that can be sent using the Magic Beam Mode: typed messages, editable preset messages, and Telephone Directory Mode data. Sending Messages You Type Simply type the message you want to send on Secret Sender's keyboard. Example: To send the message "HAVE A NICE DAY' 1. Select the Magic Beam Mode icon in the main menu to enter the Magic Beam Mode. 2. Use the keyboard keys to type the message you want to send. Type: H A V E SPACE A SPACE N I C E SHIFT LEFT ARROW D A Y You can type up to 28 characters. If you make a mistake while typing the message, you can use LEFT ARROW and RIGHT ARROW to move to the character you want to change and then type a new character. Or you can press C/CLR to clear the display completely and return to the "Message?" display. 3. Press EXE to send the message. 4. After the message is sent, the "Message?" display reappears, so you can type the next message to send. Things to remember when sending data... The following notes apply whenever sending typed messages, editable preset messages, or Telephone Directory Mode data. If the data cannot be sent properly for any reason, the message "Communication Error" appears on the display in about 1 second. When this happens, you can press EXE again to try to resend, or you can press C/CLR to clear the display and send different data. After you press EXE to send data, you can interrupt the send operation by holding down AC/ON for more than one second. If Magic Beam data is received by Secret Sender while you are performing another Magic Beam operation, the received data appears at the top of the display. Sending a Preset Message You can store up to 10 preset messages in memory, for quick and easy recall when you need them. After you recall a message, you can send it to another unit with the touch of a button. Note that you can also edit preset messages using the procedure on page 100. Example: To send the preset message "What are you doing?" 1. Select the Magic Beam Mode icon in the main menu to enter the Magic Beam Mode. 2. Press UP ARROW or DOWN ARROW to display the preset message list. 3. Use UP ARROW and DOWN ARROW to scroll through the preset messages until the one you want to send is displayed. 4. Press EXE to send the message. See "Things to remember when sending data..." for important precautions about data send operations. 5. After the message is sent, the "Message?" display reappears, so you can input the next message to send. Sending Telephone Directory Data With the following procedure, you can send data from the Telephone Directory to another unit. The data sent includes Fun Face Maker portraits, and you can also send your own name and phone number information. Example: To send the Telephone Directory Mode data for Eric Jackson 1. Select the Magic Beam Mode icon in the main menu to enter the Magic Beam Mode. 2. Press the FUNCTION key to display the function menu. 3. Use the DOWN ARROW key to highlight either "Tel (Busi)" or "Tel (Pers)" and select the Telephone Directory Mode where the data you want to send is stored. Use Steps 1 through 3 in "Sending a Preset Message" to set up the receiving unit to receive data. 4. Press EXE to display the Telephone Directory Mode names and faces. You can switch the face display off by pressing LEFT ARROW, and on by pressing RIGHT ARROW. Your own data is located at the top. 5. Use UP ARROW and DOWN ARROW to scroll through the names until the one whose data you want to send is highlighted. 6. Press EXE to send the data. See "Things to remember when sending data... " for important precautions about data send operations. 7. After the data is sent, the Telephone Directory Mode data display reappears, so you can select the next data to send. When Telephone Directory Mode data is received, Secret Sender shows the data on its display. Then you can use UP ARROW and DOWN ARROW to scroll through the data, and LEFT ARROW and RIGHT ARROW to switch the face on and off. If there is not enough free memory in the receiving unit, the message "Memory Full!" appears. After this message appears, no more data is stored in Secret Sender's memory, even though the received data continues to be shown on the display. Editing Preset Messages Use the following procedure to change the preset messages to any other message you want to use. 1. Select the Magic Beam Mode icon in the main menu to enter the Magic Beam Mode. 2. While the "Message?" prompt is shown on the display, press FUNCTION to display the function menu. 3. Use the UP ARROW and DOWN ARROW keys to highlight "Create Message." 4. Press EXE. 5. Use UP ARROW and DOWN ARROW to scroll through the preset messages until the one you want to edit is displayed. Also make sure that the cursor is located inside the message you want to edit. 6. Change the preset message or input a completely new one. You can completely clear the message where the cursor is located by pressing the C/CLR key. 7. After you finish inputting the message, press EXE to store it. After you edit a preset message, the text you input remains in memory until you change it again or until you perform the RESET operation. The RESET operation returns the preset messages to their original form. Registering Your Own Data Use the following procedure to register your own name, address, telephone number, and portrait data which you can then send with the procedure described under "Sending Telephone Directory Data." 1. Highlight either the school/business directory icon or the personal directory icon in the main menu, and press EXE. 2. Press the FUNCTION key to display the function menu. 3. Use DOWN ARROW to highlight your "Your Profile." "CASIO 012-345-6789" appears on the display. 4. Press EXE. 5. Use the same procedures that you used to input Telephone Directory Mode data to input your name, telephone number, and other data. 6. After you finish inputting data, press EXE to store it. Things to check for if you have problems using Magic Beam If battery power is weak, you have to move the two units closer together. If the two units are at an angle of more than 20 degrees from each other, you have to move them closer together. If an object blocks the path between the two units, communication will be impossible. Outdoors, near a window, or in other brightly lit areas, you may have to move the two units closer together or you may not be able to send data at all. If there is a third unit nearby, communication may be impossible. (br/all-12/13/94)
