EC-4042 (650-0821) Display Faxback Doc. # 3743 The Display Indicator Indicator Meaning M1, M2, The specified memory (1,2, or 3) M3 contains a value other than zero. 2nd The calculator will access the second function of the next key pressed. HYP The calculator will access the hyperbolic function of the next key sequence you press. SCI,ENG The display format is set to scientific (SCI) or engineering (ENG) notation. FIX A fixed-decimal setting is in effect. STAT The statistics registers contain data. DEG, RAD, The angle unit is set to degrees GRAD (DEG), radians (RED), or grads (GRAD). x The entered coordinates have been converted to rectangular, and the x-coordinate is displayed. r The entered coordinates have been converted to polar, and r- coordinate is displayed. () One or more parentheses are open. * Two or more parentheses are open. Error An error has occurred. You must press ON/C or OFF to clear the error and all pending operations. Display Formats You can enter a value in any format, regardless of the selected display format. 2nd [SCI] Select a scientific notation as the display format and turns on the SCI indicator. Results are "normalized"(with one digit to the left of the decimal point). 2nd [ENG] Selects engineering notation as the display format and turns on the ENG indicator. Results are normalized so that the exponent is a multiple of 3. 2nd [FLO] Restores standard notation (floating-decimal) display format and turns off the SCI or ENG indicator. Results outside the range -9999999999 to 0.000000001, 0- 0.000000001 to 9999999999 are automatically displayed Scientific notation. 2nd Sets the number of decimal places [Fix] n displayed in results, and turns on the FIX indicator. n can be 0 through 9. The setting affects all decimal results and the mantissa of scientific-and engineering-notation results. Results are rounded or padded with trailing zeros as necessary to fix the selected setting. 2nd Removes the fixed-decimal setting and turns [FIX] . the FIX indicator off. Entering Numbers in Scientific or Engineering Notation 1. Enter the mantissa (up to 10 digits). If it is negative press +/- after entering the mantissa. 2. Press EE and enter the exponent (one or two digits). If it is negative, press +/- either before entering the exponent. If you press an incorrect digit key, re-enter the correct digits. (The calculator uses only the last two digits entered as the exponent.) Note: Entering a number in scientific or engineering notation does not change the display-format setting. Calculation and Display of Results Results are calculated to 12 digits internally and rounded in the display to 10 digits (or 10 plus a 2-digit exponent). Results whose absolute values are less than 1.0E-99 are set to zero, with no error. Results whose absolute values are greater than 9.999999999E99 are treated as overflow, and an error occurs. You can control the order of calculations by using parentheses to group parts of an expression that you want evaluated as a unit. Square Root Calculates the square root of the displayed value. 2nd [square root] Calculates the cube root of the value. 1/x Calculates the reciprocal (x-1) of the displayed value. (LB/all-03/01/94)
