My Own Diary (650-0834) Operation Faxback Doc. # 31520 To switch the diary on or off, press ON/OFF. A face and HELLO appear when you turn on the diary. After about 2 seconds, the display shows the last function you selected. (If you haven't used the diary before or if you have reset it, the display shows the date and time.) To view the main menu, press MODE. The main menu screen lets you select any of the diary's ten functions: Language Version Phone Directory Lock/Unlock Clock Alarm Calculator Fortune-Teller Scissors, Paper, Stone Hangman Match-Maker To select a function, repeatedly press < or > until the desired symbol flashes. Then press SET. The face automatically changes expression when you use the diary. To conserve power, the diary automatically turns itself off if you do not press a button for about 4 minutes (except when the day and time are displayed). The clock continues keeping time. CHECKING MEMORY The diary contains 1392 memory locations. To see how much memory is used and how much is left, press MEM with the phone directory file or time displayed. The display shows USED/FREE and the number of used and free locations. CHOOSING A LANGUAGE You can choose English, French, or Italian as the diary's language. Follow these steps to select the language. 1. Select Language Version from the main menu. ENGLISH?, FRANCAISE? or ITALIANO? appears on the display. 2. Use the /\ or \/ keys to select the language. 3. Press SET. A cursor appears on the display above the selected language, and all displays appear in the selected language. The diary automatically displays the clock, or you can press MODE to select another function. USING THE PHONE DIRECTORY To use the phone directory, choose the Phone Directory from the menu. You can enter a person's name (up to 24 characters) and a telephone number (up to 20 characters) into each telephone record. ENTER TELEPHONE RECORDS 1. Press SET. The display shows NAME? 2. Type in the person's name. NOTES: Press SPACE to insert a space between characters. Press SHIFT to type the characters marked above the keys (except C/CE, AM-PM, 12-24, +, x, and =). A slash (/) appears when you type SHIFT and the division sign. Each time you press SHIFT, the SHIFT indicator appears or disappears from the display. If you make a mistake, use the left or right arrow keys to move the cursor to the letter you want to change. Press the correct key to type over the wrong character, INS to insert a space, or CLR to delete a character. 3. Press SET. 4. Use the number buttons to enter the phone number and press SET. RECALLING TELEPHONE RECORDS The diary stores telephone records alphabetically. Choose the Phone Directory from the menu and press SET, then use /\ or \/ to scroll through the telephone records. If you entered a record with a name containing over 12 characters, you can only see the first 12 characters of the name on the display. Press (or press and hold) < or > to see the rest of the record. The name appears first, then the phone number. EDITING TELEPHONE RECORDS 1. Recall the telephone record you want to edit. 2. Press EDIT. The first letter of the name flashes. 3. Use < or > to move the cursor to the letter you want to change. Press the correct key to type over the wrong letter, INS to insert a space, or CLR to delete a letter. 4. Press SET. The first digit of the phone number flashes. 5. Use < or > to move the cursor to the number you want to change. Press the correct key to type over the wrong number, INS to insert a space, or CLR to delete a number. 6. Press SET. NOTE: When the memory is almost full and you edit or delete a file, the display flashes and shows ...ZZZ while it checks its memory. DELETING A PHONE RECORD 1. Recall the telephone record you want to delete. 2. Press and hold CLR until the file disappears from the display. USING THE LOCK/UNLOCK FEATURE The diary's Lock/Unlock feature lets you block unauthorized access to your phone directory. You must set your own 4-digit password to use this feature. LOCKING 1. Select Lock/Unlock from the menu. LOCK appears on the display. 2. Enter a 4-digit password. Press SET again to store the password. CAUTION: Be sure to use a password you can remember, such as your best friend's birthday. You can also write it down in a secret place. This locks the phone directory. UNLOCKING Once the password is entered, you must type in your password to unlock the diary every time you want to use your phone directory. When the phone directory is selected, LOCK appears on the display. Type in your password. LOCK disappears. CHANGING THE PASSWORD To change the password, select Lock/Unlock from the menu. When LOCK appears on the display, type in your old password. Then type in your new password and press SET. NOTE: To cancel the Lock feature, enter your password, then enter 0000 and press SET. The lock feature will be off the next time you turn the unit on, and you can use the Phone Directory without entering the password first. USING THE CLOCK SETTING/VIEWING THE DAY AND TIME The diary displays the day of the week and time when it is turned on. To view the time after using another function, select the Clock from the menu. NOTE: The diary does not turn off automatically while the day and time are displayed. Follow these steps to set the day of the week and time. 1. Select Clock from the menu. The display shows the day of the week and the time. 2. Press and hold EDIT until the first digit of the time flashes. 3. To set the day of the week, press /\ or \/ until the correct day appears on the display. 4. Use the number keys to enter the correct time. If you need to correct a number, use < and > to move the cursor. NOTES: If the diary is in 12-hour format, press AM-PM to switch between an AM or PM time. A or P appears on the display. (See "Choosing a 12- or 24-Hour Format", below). Enter a zero before a single-digit entry. For example, enter the fifth minute after the hour as 05. 5. Press SET to store the correct day and time. NOTE: If you enter an invalid time (for example, 15 for the hour in the 12-hour format) and press SET, the diary automatically returns to the previously set time. Repeat Steps 4-5 to enter the correct time. CHOOSING 12- OR 24-HOUR FORMAT The diary is preset to the 24-hour time format, but you can change it to the 12-hour format. In the 12-hour format, A or P appears for an AM or PM time. To change the format, press 12-24 while the time is displayed. NOTE: You cannot change the diary's time format while you are setting the time. You must first press SET to exit the time setting function. TURNING THE KEY TONE ON AND OFF You can set the diary to beep each time you press a key. To turn on the key tone, select the Clock from the menu, then press the musical note. Press the musical note again to turn off the key tone. USING THE ALARM You can store a message and set the alarm to sound and the message to appear at the time you want. When the alarm is turned on, the diary beeps for about 20 seconds at the alarm time (even if the diary is off). If the diary is on, press any key to silence the alarm sooner. If the diary is off, press ON/OFF to silence the alarm. Select the Alarm from the menu and press SET to refer the alarm message and alarm time. NOTES: The alarm sounds at the same time the next day, unless you turn it off. Because pressing any key turns off the alarm, the alarm might not sound if you are entering information at the set alarm time. To use the alarm, select the Alarm from the menu. ENTERING THE ALARM TIME AND THE MESSAGE 1. Press EDIT. The first letter of the message flashes. 2. Type in your desired message, then press SET. The first digit of the alarm time flashes. 3. Enter the alarm time, then press SET. The alarm indicator appears to show that the alarm is set. SETTING THE ALARM When you enter an alarm time, pressing SET automatically sets the alarm. To turn off the alarm, press the musical note again. The alarm indicator disappears. To turn on the alarm at any time, press the musical note. The alarm indicator appears. USING THE CALCULATOR To use the calculator, select Calculator from the menu. CAL and 0 appear on the display. For standard calculations, press the keys in the order they appear in the arithmetic operation. For example, press 2 + 3=. The answer appears after you press =. NOTES: If you enter the wrong function symbol ( +, -, x, /), simply press the correct one to replace it. Press C/CE to correct an error or clear the display for the next calculation. A dot appears at the left of the display if the result of the calculation is negative. (EB 3/26/96)
