LCD English/Spanish Translator (630-0928) Operation Faxback Doc. # 31690 VIEWING THE WORLD TIME Follow these steps to view the time in 128 cities around the world. 1. Press MODE until Currency appears on the display. Then press MODE again so the translator displays the date and time (with an arrow to the right of the display). This is the date and time of the last selected city. 2. Press > to display the previously selected city's name. If you want to view the date and time for another city, repeatedly press /\ or \/ to display the desired city name. Or, enter the first letter of the desired city name, then repeatedly press /\ or \/ until the translator displays that city. Press MODE. The date and time for the city appears. 3. Press SPACE, if necessary, for daylight saving time. + appears on the display, and the hour digit advances by 1. USING THE TRANSLATOR TRANSLATING A WORD Follow these steps to translate a word between English and Spanish. 1. Press MODE until ** English ** or ** Espanol ** appears on the display. Then press ENG to translate from English to Spanish, or Press SPA to translate from Spanish to English. 2. Enter the word you want to translate. For example, to translate the word take from English, type TAKE. NOTES: Press < to clear the display if you have made a wrong entry. The translator uses British spellings of some words. If you are unsure of a word's spelling, enter the first few letters in the word and then press ENG. The translator displays the first English word in the word list that begins with the entered letters. For example, enter GARG, then press ENG; gargle? appears on the display. You can press /\ and \/ to scroll up or down through words in the word list. 3. Press SPA to see the displayed word in Spanish. In the example, coger appears on the display. NOTE: If the word has more than one possible meaning, repeatedly pressing SPA displays the alternate meanings. If you are translating from Spanish to English, press ENG to see the word displayed in English. 4. Repeat Steps 1-3 to translate other words. NOTE: Some Spanish words have additional characters or accented characters. When you translate from Spanish to English, enter the English letter that most closely matches the Spanish letter. When you press SPA, the word with its proper character or accent appears on the display. For example, to translate from Spanish, type NINO, then press SPA. The translator displays: Then press ENG to see the translation. TRANSLATING A PHRASE Your translator has built-in phrases in ten categories: business, restaurant, accommodations, shopping, transport, emergency, entertainment, money, airport, and general. 1. Press MODE until ** English ** or ** Espanol ** appears on the display. Then press ENG (to translate from English) or SPA (to translate from Spanish). 2. Press any one of the category keys (listed above the number keys) for the first built-in phrase. The first phrase in that category appears on the display. For example, press ENTER (7) for entertainment. When is the museum open? appears on the display. NOTES: If the display does not show the complete phrase, press > to view the remaining part of that phrase. To see other phrases, repeatedly press /\ or \/. 3. When the phrase you want to translate is displayed, press SPA for the Spanish translation or ENG for the English translation. USING THE CALCULATOR You can use the translator to do standard arithmetic, memory and percent calculations. Press MODE until 0 appears. The following keys function only in the calculator mode. Press AC to start a new calculation. Press CE to cancel the last entry. Press +/- to change the sign of the value on the display. NOTE: If the result of a calculation has more than 10 digits, or if you try to divide by 0, E (error) appears. If E appears, press AC to clear the display. STANDARD CALCULATIONS (+, -, x, /) For standard calculations, press the keys in the order they appear in the arithmetic operation. For example: You press: You see: 3 + 4 = 7. 8 X 3 = 24. MEMORY CALCULATIONS The memory calculation feature lets you easily do multistep calculations. Use the following keys for memory calculations: Press MC to clear the memory. Press M+ to total a calculation and add the total to memory. Press M- to total a calculation and subtract the total from memory. Press MR to recall (display) the value in memory. For example: You press: You see: 4 x 5 M+ M 20. 28 x +2 M+ M 30. 7 - 2 M- M 5. 105 / M+ M 15. MR M 60. NOTE: M appears at the left of the display when you store a value in memory. M disappears when you clear the memory. PERCENT CALCULATIONS The following examples show how to do percent calculations. To calculate: You press: You see: What is 12% of 150? 150 x 12 % 18. What percentage of 880 is 660? 660 / 880 % 75. CONVERTING CURRENCY Your translator can convert among five currencies. You must set the exchange rate of each currency. SETTING THE EXCHANGE RATES 1. Press MODE until ** Currency ** appears on the display. 2. Press the currency key (listed above the A, S, D, F, and G keys) that you want to set a rate for. 3. Press EDIT and enter the exchange rate. 4. Press EDIT to store the exchange rate. 5. Repeat Steps 2-4 to enter exchange rates for other currencies. CONVERTING CURRENCY 1. Press MODE until ** Currency ** appears on the display. 2. Enter the amount of currency you want to convert. 3. Press the currency key you want to convert to. 4. Press CLS, then repeat Steps 2 and 3 to convert another currency. For example, to convert 50 U.S. dollars to German marks with an exchange rate of 1 mark = 1.52 dollars, enter 1.52 dollars, enter 1.52 as the exchange rate. Enter 50 and press DM to convert to Marks. The translator displays 76. NOTES: To reverse the exchange, press INV before you press the currency key. For example, to convert 50 German Marks to U.S. dollars, enter 50, press INV, then press DM. The translator displays 32.8947368 (dollars). To convert between two currencies, neither of which is dollars, convert the first currency into dollars. Then press CLS, enter the result of the first conversion, and convert from dollars to the desired currency. METRIC CONVERSIONS Follow these steps to convert between English measurements and metric measurements. There are ten types of conversions. 1. Press MODE until ** Metric ** appears on the display. 2. Enter the amount you want to convert. Then press the conversion key you want. NOTE: To reverse the conversion, press INV, then press the conversion key you want. For example, to convert 20 cm to inches, enter 20, press INV, then press in-cm. The translator displays 7.874015748 (inches). RESETTING THE TRANSLATOR If the translator locks up or does not work properly, you must reset it by pressing 1, 2, 3, and 4 at the same time for about 2-3 seconds or using a pointed object, such as a straightened paper clip, to press the reset button inside the battery compartment. NOTE: You must re-enter the date, time, and currency exchange rates after you reset the translator. (EB 4/5/96)
