EC-214 Calculator Alarm Clock (650-0572) Operation Faxback Doc. # 32175 USING THE TONE (MUSIC) KEY When the note appears on the left side of the display the EC-214 beeps each time you press a key. To turn the beep on or off, press note. USING THE KEYBOARD ON/OFF SWITCH This switch turns the keyboard on or off. When you need to adjust the time or make a calculation, press K/B ON/OFF to display the keyboard. When you want to display only the clock, press K/B ON/OFF again to hide the keyboard. SETTING THE TIME 1. Press K/B ON/OFF to display the keyboard. 2. Press SET. The clock display flashes. 3. Enter the desired hour and minute. If either number has a single digit, you must enter a zero first. Each time you press a digit, the seconds reset to zero. 4. Press AM/PM to change AM or PM in the display, if necessary. 5. When you finish setting the time, press TIME or SET to return to the clock display. USING THE ALARM Setting the Alarm Time 1. At the clock display, press ALARM. The display shows - - - - AL. 2. Press SET. The clock displays the last alarm time and bell flashes. 3. Enter the desired alarm hour and minute. If either number has a single digit, you must enter a zero first. 4. Press AM/PM to change AM or PM in the display, if necessary. 5. Press TIME or SET to change to the current time display. Bell appears. The alarm is set to sound. To check the preset alarm time, press ALARM. Press TIME to return to the current time. Each day at the preset alarm time, the alarm beeps for about 60 seconds. To silence the alarm before it automatically stops, press ALARM OFF. Turning the Alarm Off/On Follow these steps to turn off the alarm so it will not sound again. 1. At the current time display, press ALARM twice. The display shows - - - - AL. 2. Press TIME to return to the current time display. Bell flashes. To set the alarm to sound at the preset time again, press ALARM twice then TIME once. CALCULATOR OPERATION 1. Press K/B ON/OFF to display the keyboard. 2. Press CAL to enter the calculator mode. 3. See "Calculator Examples" as guides for entering calculations. 4. To clear a calculation, press C/CE twice. 5. Press K/B ON/OFF to turn off the keyboard and return to the clock display after you complete your calculations. NOTE: The EC-214 automatically returns to the clock display if you do not press a button within about 8 minutes. CORRECTING ENTRY ERRORS If you enter an incorrect value, press C/CE once. Then enter the correct value and continue your calculation. If you press an incorrect function key (+, -, x, / ), simply press the correct function key and continue your calculation. Constant Calculations When adding, subtracting, or dividing, the operation and the last number you enter before hitting = remain constant. Calculation You Press You See 273+572=845 273+572= 845. 768+572=1340 768= 1340. 597-184=413 597-184= 413. 323-184=139 323= 139. 2828/14=202 2828/14= 202. 5460/14=390 5460= 390. When multiplying, the operation and the first number you enter remain constant. Calculation You Press You See 295x16=4720 295x16= 4720. 295x27=7965 27= 7965. SETTING THE TAX AND TIP RATE Before you can calculate a tax or tip, you must set their rates. 1. Press CAL to enter the calculator mode. 2. Press TAX or TIPS. The calculator displays the current rate. 3. Press SET. The rate flashes on the display. 4. Enter a tax or tip rate (to the nearest tenth of a percent) as a 3 digit number. For example, enter 030 for 3% or 850 for 85%. The display continues to flash. 5. Press SET to store the tax/tip rate into memory. The display stops flashing. NOTE: To view the stored tax or tip rate at any time, enter the calculator mode then press TAX or TIPS. To return to the normal calculator display, press CAL. Example: Calculate an 8.5% tax rate on 1,000. NOTE: First set the tax rate to 8.5%. ERRORS ERROR appears when: You attempt to divide a number by 0; or The calculation result exceeds eight digits to the left of the decimal point. This is an overflow error. Press C/CE to clear an error and continue the calculation. Otherwise, press C/CE twice or CAL to start with a new calculation. Estimating Calculation Results You can estimate the result of an overflow error (to eight significant digits) by using this procedure. 1. Count the number of digits displayed to the left of the decimal point. 2. Remove the decimal point. 3. Add to the right of the number enough zeros to make the number have 8 digits, then add as many zeros as there were digits to the left of the decimal point. For example, if the display shows ERROR 1.0142064, the answer is about 101,420,640. If the display shows ERROR 319.70347, the answer is about 31,970,347,000. (EB 4/3/96)
