Four-Language Translator (630-0799) Operation Faxback Doc. # 32266 ADJUSTING THE DISPLAY CONTRAST 1. Press ON/OFF to turn on the translator. 2. Press /\ / \/ to adjust the display's contrast to one of 16 levels. TRANSLATING A WORD 1. Press ON/OFF. 2. Press WORD to enter the translator mode. NOTE: In this mode, the keys beep when you press them. Press CE to turn the beep sound off or on. 3. Press ENG (for English), SPA (for Spanish), CHN (for Chinese), or JPN (for Japanese) to select the language you want to translate from. For example, press ENG to select English. 4. Type the word. For example, GIRL. NOTES: You cannot enter a word with more than 27 characters. If you misspell a word when you enter it, press < repeatedly to move to the letter(s) you want to change, then correct the spelling. 5. Press ENG, SPA, CHN, or JPN to select the language you want to translate to. For example, press CHN to select Chinese. nu hai (Chinese for girl) appears on the screen. NOTE: If the word you want to translate is not in the translator's vocabulary, the next word in its vocabulary appears on the display, with a question mark after it. For example, if you enter HIGHLAND and then press CHN, hinder ? appears on the display. Press /\ or \/ to scroll through the word list. When the translator displays the word you want to translate, press CHN again. TRANSLATING PHRASES There are 150 built-in phrases in 10 categories. Follow these steps to see a phrase translation. 1. Press ON/OFF and select the home language. 2. Press CATEGORIES. The first 27 characters of the first built-in phrase show on the display. NOTE: If the phrase has more than 27 characters, press > to see the rest of the phrase and < to see the first part of the phrase. 3. Select one of the ten categories by pressing Q, W, E, R, T, Y, U, I, O, or P. The ten categories are: Q Business W Restaurant/eating out E Hotel/accommodations R Shopping T Transportation Y Emergency U Entertainment I On the Town O Airport/passport desk P General phrases 4. Press /\ and \/ to scroll through the phrases in the same category and select a phrase. 5. When you have chosen a phrase to translate, select the language you want to translate the phrase to. NOTE: If the display does not show the complete phrase, press > to view the remaining part of that phrase. CONVERTING CURRENCY You can convert between any eight currencies. Before you convert currency, you must set the exchange rate for each currency you intend to use. SETTING THE EXCHANGE RATE 1. Press ON/OFF. 2. Press $ until rate -1 0 appears on the display. 3. Press $ again and enter the exchange rate. For example, if you are traveling in France, and the exchange rate is $1 equals 5F, enter 5. 4. Press $ to store the exchange rate. rate-1 5 appears on the first line of the display. 5. Press /\ or \/ to select the next currency, and repeat Steps 3 and 4 to set the currency rate. CONVERTING CURRENCY After you set the exchange rate, follow these steps to convert currency. 1. Press ON/OFF. 2. Press $. The display shows rate-1 and the exchange rate you set on the first line. If necessary, use /\ and \/ to select a different currency rate. 3. Enter the amount of the currency you want to convert. For example, if you want to convert $4.50 into francs, enter 4.50. 4. Press =. The converted currency amount appears on the display. Note: To reverse the conversion, press INV before you enter the amount to be converted. USING THE CALCULATOR You can use the translator to do standard arithmetic, memory, and percent calculations. Press ON/OFF and then press CAL to display 0. The following keys function only in the calculator mode. CAL - clears the display for the next calculation. CE - cancels the last entry (or the total after you have pressed =). +/- - changes the sign of the entered number. STANDARD CALCULATIONS You can use +, -, X or / for standard calculations. Press the keys in the order they appear in the arithmetic operation. You press: You see: 3 + 4 = 7. 8 x 3 - 4 = 20. 5 / 1 = 5. NOTES: Press the number and then +/- to enter a negative number. If the result of a calculation has more than 12 digits, or if you try to divide by 0, E (error) appears in the lower right corner. If E appears, press CAL to clear the display. MEMORY CALCULATIONS The memory calculation feature lets you easily do multistep calculations. Use the following keys to perform memory calculations. Press M+ to total a calculation and add the total to the value in memory. Press M- to total a calculation and subtract the total from the value in memory. Press MR to recall (display) the value in memory. Press MC to clear the memory. For example: You press: You see: 4 x 5 = M+ 20. 28 + 2 = M+ 30. 7-2 = M- 5. 75 / 5 = M+ 15. MR 60. NOTE: M appears on the right of the display when you store a value in memory. M disappears when you press MC to clear the memory. PERCENT CALCULATIONS Perform percent calculations as shown in the following example: To calculate: You press: You see: What is 12% of 150? 150 x 12% 18 METRIC CONVERSION Follow these steps to convert between the following 8 measurements: in <--> cm lb <--> kg ft <--> m pt <--> liters mi <--> km gal <--> liters oz <--> g degrees C <--> degrees F 1. Press ON/OFF and then select METRIC. The display shows in --> cm 2.54. 2. Use /\ and \/ to select the measurement. 3. Enter the quantity, then press = to see the conversion.
