READING PHONETIC PRONUNCIATIONS

Read the phonetic pronunciation as if it were English.

Syllables are separated by =.

Accented syllables are underlined.

Raised letters (e.g., ay^oo, yah) should be pronounced only fleetingly.

Spanish vowels (not diphthongs) are pure and fairly short. Try to read a
letter combination like oa without moving your tongue or lips while
pronouncing the sound.

Consonants

bh a rather indecisive b (i.e., one verging on v).

dh like th in this, often rather indecisive, possibly quite like
              d.

g always hard, as in go.

g a g-sound where the tongue doesn't quite close the air
passage between itself and the roof of the mouth, so the
escaping air produces audible friction; also occasionally
              pronounced as an indecisive g.

kh like g, but based on a k-sound; therefore, hard and
voiceless, like ch in Scottish loch.

i^y like lli in million.

n as in the Spanish senor, or like ni in onion.

r slightly rolled in the front of the mouth.

rr strongly rolled r.

s always hard, as in so.

Vowels and Diphthongs

ah a short version of the a in car (i.e., a sound between a in
              cat and u in cut).

igh as in sigh.

ou as in loud.
