4-Zone Alarm System (490-0475) Operation Faxback Doc. # 15287 TO SET DELAY: Note: Delay does not work in Home Md. 1. Disarm system. 2. Press DELAY to change Delay Setting; indicator steady on is 30 seconds, off is instant, flashing is 55 seconds. This covers Zones 1 and 2 only. If system is violated and rearms itself then it will not have exit delay. CONNECTING POWER Follow these steps to connect power to the console. NOTE: Be sure the outlet is not controlled by a switch. 1. Cut 18-gauge, or larger, two-conductor wire to the length needed to reach from the console to an AC outlet. 2. Strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from each end of both conductors. 3. Connect one conductor between Terminal 17 and one of the power supply's terminals. 4. Connect the other wire between Terminal 18 and the power supply's other terminal. 5. After you complete all other system connections, remove the center screw from the AC outlet cover. Then, plug the power supply into the outlet. Secure the power supply to the outlet using the supplied screw. CONNECTING BACKUP BATTERIES Follow these steps to connect the backup batteries to the console. NOTE: The backup batteries must supply 12 volts, and have at least 2.5 amp-hour capacity. These instructions are specific for using two Radio Shack Sealed Rechargeable Enercells (Cat. No. 23-181) or 7 amp-hour batteries available from Consumer Mail Center through your local Radio Shack store. 1. Connect one end of the supplied short black jumper to one battery's - connector. Connect the jumper's other end to the other battery's + connector. 2. Connect the bare end of the supplied red wire to Terminal 19. 3. Connect the bare end of the supplied long black wire to Terminal 20. 4. Connect the spade-lug connector on the red wire to the other + battery terminal. 5. Connect the spade-lug connector on the black wire to the other - battery terminal. 6. Secure the batteries in the console with the battery strap. The console begins to charge the batteries when you connect them. It takes several days to fully charge the batteries. The batteries typically last several years if they are never fully discharged. Test the system weekly using battery power. See "Testing the System." INSTALLING A TAMPER SWITCH ON THE CONSOLE You can secure the console against tampering by installing Tamper Switches (Cat. No. 49-528) on the console. These switches sound the panic alarm when you open the console door or try to pry the console off the wall. Install these switches after you have made all other connections. Follow these steps to connect a tamper switch. 1. Disconnect the burglar alarm sounder wires from Terminal 25. 2. Use two-conductor wires to connect the switch's terminals to Terminals 11 and 12, as shown. 3. Secure the switch to the console in one of the indicated positions, using the nuts and screws supplied with the switch. 4. Disarm the system. 5. Reconnect the burglar alarm sounder wires to Terminal 25. 6. Close the door and secure it with the supplied screws. CUSTOMIZING THE SYSTEM SETTING THE ENTRY AND EXIT DELAY The system has an entry and exit delay for sensors connected to Zone's 1 and 2. When you arm the system, the system ignores violations in these zones during the exit delay. When you arm the system and one of these zones is violated, the system waits for the entry delay to expire before it sounds the main alarm. The prealarm buzzer sounds during the entry delay. The entry/exit delay is factory-set to 30 seconds. If you place the arm/ disarm switch outside your home, where you do not violate a zone to access the switch, you should set the system to instantly arm. If it takes longer than 30 seconds to exit your home after you arm the system, you should set the delay to 55 seconds. Follow these steps to change the entry/exit delay. NOTE: For U.L. installations, do not set the entry/exit delay to longer than 30 seconds. 1. Be sure the system is disarmed. 2. Press DELAY on the control panel to change the entry/exit delay. The indicator above the button shows the delay setting, as follows. INDICATOR DELAY ON 30 Seconds OFF Instant FLASHING (Not for U.L. installations) The ARM and Zone 1 and 2 status indicators on the control panel and the remote ARM indicator flashes during the entry/exit delay. NOTE: If the burglar alarm sounds, all entry delays are cancelled for that arm cycle. SETTING THE HOME-MODE ZONES When you are home, you can arm the system to alert you if zones are violated. If you have motion detectors in your home, you do not want the motion detectors to activate the system. You might, however, want to be alerted if someone violates a sensor connected to a door or window. As set at the factory, the home mode monitors Zones 1 and 2, and 3. Follow these steps to change the zones monitored when you arm the system in the home mode. 1. Be sure the system is not armed. 2. Press and hold down HOME. The indicators for the monitored zones turn on. 3. To change which zones are monitored, press the zone's button. If the indicator above the zone's button is on, the zone will be monitored. 4. When the home mode is as you want it, release HOME. SETTING THE AWAY-MODE ZONES When you are away, you typically want all zones armed. However, if you are experiencing trouble with sensors in a zone, or if for some other reason you do not want a zone to be monitored, follow these steps to change the zones monitored when you arm the system in the away mode. 1. Be sure the system is not armed. 2. Press and hold down AWAY. The indicators for the monitored zones turn on. 3. To change the zones monitored in the away mode, press the zone's button. If the indicator above the zone's button is on, the zone will be monitored. 4. When the away mode is as you want it, release AWAY. SETTING THE DAY-MODE ZONES You can set the system to sound the pre-alarm buzzer when a sensor in a zone is violated. You can use this to alert you that someone has opened a door or window, without sounding the main system siren or activating a dialer. As factory set, the system monitors Zones 1 and 3 in the day mode. Follow these steps to change which zones are monitored in the day mode. 1. Be sure the system is not armed. 2. Press and hold down DAY so that the DAY indicator lights. 3. To change the zones monitored in the day mode, press the zone's button. If the indicator above the zone's button is on, the zone will be monitored. 4. When the day mode is as you want it, release DAY. RESTORING FACTORY SETTINGS Follow these steps to change the entry/exit delay, away mode, home mode, and day mode to their factory settings. 1. Be sure the system is not armed. 2. Use a small screwdriver or straightened paper clip to press the SYSTEM RESET button. ARMING AND DISARMING THE SYSTEM Follow these steps to arm the system. 1. At the console, press either HOME or AWAY to select the alarm mode. The selected mode's indicator lights. 2. Press DELAY, if desired, to change the entry/exit delay. See "Setting the Entry and Exit Delay." 3. Follow the instructions included with your arming device to arm the system. The console's ARM indicator and any remote arm indicators flash if you have set an exit delay. The indicators light steadily if you have set the system to instantly arm. NOTES: If a zone is violated when you try to arm the system, the console beeps, the zone's status indicator on the control panel (and any remote status indicators) flash, and the system does not arm. Correct the problem and try again. If the console is set to the test mode when you try to arm the system, the console beeps and the system does not arm. Press TEST to exit the test mode and try again. If a zone is violated when the entry delay ends, the system immediately activates the burglar alarm sounder. To disarm the system, follow the instructions included with your arming device. If there has been a violation, the violated zone's status indicator on the control panel flashes, and any remote loop indicators flash. Press RESTORE. If the light continues to flash, a sensor in the zone is still violated. USING THE DAY MODE When you activate the day mode, the pre-alarm buzzer sounds whenever a sensor in one of the day mode zones is violated. See "Setting the Day- Mode Zones." To turn on the day mode, press DAY. The DAY indicator lights. To turn off the day mode, press DAY again. The DAY indicator turns off. SILENCING THE SYSTEM AND UNDERSTANDING ALERT SOUNDS Fire Trouble Tone - sounds a high-low tone at the console and sounds the pre-alarm buzzer. When this tone sounds, there is a wiring problem with the fire detector zone. The tone does not automatically turn off. Follow these steps when the tone sounds. 1. Disarm the system. 2. Press SILENCE to silence this tone. The FIRE indicator and any remote status indicators continue to flash. 3. Correct the problem. Check the fire detector wiring and the SMOKE/ACCESSORY/ARM fuse in the console. 4. Press the recessed FIRE RESET button with a small screwdriver or straightened paper clip. If you corrected the problem, the FIRE and remote loop indicators stop flashing after about 30 seconds. If the indicators do not stop flashing, there is still a problem with the smoke/fire detector wiring. Burglar Alarm - the sounder you connect to the burglar alarm terminals (24 and 25) sounds when the system is armed and a sensor in one of the protected zones is violated. The alarm automatically turns off in about 5 minutes. Follow these steps to return the system to normal after an alarm. 1. If the alarm is still sounding, disarm the system. The alarm silences, but the remote status indictor and the violated zone's indicator continue to flash. 2. Either press RESTORE at the console or re-arm the system to make the indicators stop flashing. If the indicator continues to flash or the system will not arm, the sensor is still violated. Correct the problem. Fire Alarm - the sounder you connect to the fire alarm terminals (23 and 24) sounds whenever a smoke or fire detector senses a possible fire. Follow these steps to silence the alarm and return the system to normal operation. WARNING: When this alarm sounds, immediately evacuate the building! Do not enter until you are certain there is no danger. 1. Disarm the system. 2. Press SILENCE on the console to silence the alarm. The fire alarm does not automatically silence. 3. Press the reset button on any smoke detectors that are sounding. 4. The FIRE indicator remains lighted and any remote status indicators flash. 5. Use a small screwdriver or straightened paper clip to press the recessed FIRE RESET button on the console. The indicators return to normal after about 30 seconds or after the smoke or fire detector no longer detects a problem. Confirmation Tones - sound from the console when you press a console button. If the console sounds a short tone, the console accepted the button press. If the console sounds a long tone, the console did not accept the button press. This usually means that the system is armed. Disarm the system before you try to change system settings. AC POWER FAIL INDICATION If AC power to the console fails or is disconnected, the console switches to battery backup power and BATTERY lights. The zone, PROGRAM, HOME, AWAY, DELAY, and STATUS indicators turn off within 60 seconds. This both conserves battery power and indicates an AC power fault. If you press a button, or if a zone's status changes, the indicators operate normally for 60 seconds. Then, they return to the power failure indication. UNDERSTANDING SYSTEM INDICATORS The system has several indicators. Refer to the following table to understand each indicator's meaning. TESTING THE SECURITY SYSTEM Follow these steps to test the system when you complete installation and once per week, thereafter. 1. Disarm the system. 2. At the console, be sure the BATTERY indicator is off. 3. Remove the screw that secures the power adapter to the AC outlet, and unplug the adapter. OR Turn off the main breaker or remove the fuse that supplies power to the AC outlet that you have plugged the power adapter into. 4. At the console, be sure the BATTERY indicator is on. If it is not on, check the connections to the backup battery and check the BATTERY fuse. If all connections are secure and the fuse is good, replace the batteries. Otherwise, correct the problem before you continue. 5. Press TEST on the console. The TEST indicator lights. 6. Violate each sensor in every zone except the panic zone one at a time. Each time you violate a sensor, the sensor's zone indicator flashes and the console sounds a tone if the sensor is functioning properly. 7. If any sensor is not functioning properly, repair or replace the sensor for full protection. BEFORE YOU PERFORM THE NEXT TESTS, NOTIFY NEIGHBORS AND THE PROPER AUTHORITIES. THESE TESTS WILL MAKE THE SYSTEM'S SIREN SOUND. 8. If you have installed a security dialer, disconnect it from the system. 9. Press each panic switch. The burglar alarm sounds. Disarm the system to silence the alarm. 10. Reconnect the security dialer. 11. Press and hold down TEST. After about 2 seconds, the burglar alarm sounds for 1 second. Then, the fire alarm sounds for 1 second. The system alternates between the two alarms while you hold down TEST. 12. If either siren does not sound, check the wiring and fuses for the sirens (BURGLAR fuse for the burglar alarm and FIRE fuse for the fire alarm). Correct the problem for full protection. 13. After you complete all tests, reconnect the power adapter. 14. Press TEST so that the TEST indicator is off to return to normal operation. (br/all-08/22/95)
