Smoke Detector with (490-0466) Operation Faxback Doc. # 15979 Silence Control The smoke detector is operating once the battery is connected. When products of combustion are sensed, the unit sounds a loud alarm which continues until the air is cleared. FALSE ALARMS "SILENCE" CONTROL The silence feature reduces the sensitivity of the alarm circuit for approximately 8 minutes. This feature is to be used only when a known alarm condition, such as smoke from cooking, activates the smoke alarm. When the silence feature is needed, under smoking conditions; the smoke alarm sound is deactivated by pushing the test button on the smoke alarm cover for at least 5 seconds and then releasing. The detector will automatically reduce sensitivity and "beep: every 30 to 40 seconds for approximately 8 minutes to indicate the alarm is in the temporary silent condition. the smoke alarm will gradually reactivate during the 8 minutes and sound the alarm if particles of combustion are still present. The silence feature may be used repeatedly until the air is cleared. CAUTION: Before using the alarm silence feature, identify the source of smoke and be certain that safe conditions exist. TESTING Test by pushing the test button on the smoke alarm cover for at least two seconds, until the alarm sounds, then release immediately. The alarm sounds if all electronic circuitry, horn and battery are working. If no alarm sounds, the unit has a defective battery or other failure. You can also test the alarm by blowing smoke into it. Test the alarm weekly to assure proper operation. NOTE: The silence mode might be activated by accident during normal testing if you do not release the test button immediately after the alarm sounds. The smoke detector will not reponse to the test button when the unit is in an alarm silence condition, which will be noted by an audible "beep" every 30 to 40 seconds. (ALL-07/19/95)
