Wireless Alarm System (490-2011) Installation - Part 2 Faxback Doc. # 16947 DISABLING THE BASE'S SIREN If you connect an external siren (See "Connecting an External Siren or Other Device to the Dry-Contact Terminals"), you might want to disable the base's internal siren. To do so, position the base's jumper to the desired position. CAUTION: Do not disable the base's internal siren unless you connect an external siren and thoroughly test it to confirm that it works properly. For the system to remain U.L. listed, the jumper must be in the enabled position. Any external siren you connect is supplementary only. SETTING/CHANGING THE ACCESS CODE Your alarm system uses an access code to arm or disarm the system and change various system settings. The system's factory-set code is 1 2 3 4. Follow these steps to set or change the code. NOTE: Before you change the code, be sure the system is disarmed (The STATUS indicator is green). If the STATUS indicator is red, enter the current access code to disarm the system. 1. Press CODE on the base. The CODE indicator flashes. 2. Enter 1 2 3 4 (or the previously set code). The base sounds a brief ascending tone and the CODE indicator lights steadily. 3. Enter the four-digit code you want to use. After you enter the fourth digit, the system sounds a brief descending tone. 4. Enter the new four-digit code again. After you enter the last digit of the code, the base sounds a brief ascending tone and then a descending tone to confirm that the new code is stored in memory. NOTE: If you enter a code that is different from the new code, the base sounds a low-pitched error tone after you re-enter the code. Repeat the procedure from Step 1. If You Forget Your Personal Access Code If you forget your personal access code, you can reset the access code to the factory default (1 2 3 4). To do so, use a thin object, such as a straightened paper clip, to press the recessed RESET button on the base under the zone indicator cover. NOTE: Pressing RESET does not affect the transmitters or the remote control. USING THE LEARN MODE You must teach the base the internal settings of the door/window transmitters, the infrared motion sensor, and the remote control. This allows the base to communicate with all of the components of this system. NOTE: While in the Learn mode, normal operation of the sensors is disabled. ADDING A TRANSMITTER OR INFRARED MOTION SENSOR NOTE: If you change the door/window transmitter's WINDOW/DOOR switch setting after you perform the learn procedure, you must remove the transmitter from the system as described in "Removing a Transmitter or Infrared Motion Sensor." Then you must remove the batteries and reinstall them as described in "Installing the Door/Window Transmitters' Batteries." Finally, you must repeat the learn procedure so the base can learn the transmitter's new switch setting. Follow these steps to add a door/window transmitter, infrared motion sensor or other sensing/transmitting device to the system, and assign each device a zone number. 1. Press LEARN on the base. The LEARN indicator flashes. 2. Enter your access code on the base's keypad. The base sounds an ascending tone, the LEARN indicator lights steadily, and the indicator for the next unassigned zone flashes. NOTE: If you do not enter the code within 14 seconds, a tone sounds and the base exits the Learn mode. 3. Enter the zone number you want to assign the device to. For example, press 01 to assign the device to Zone 1. 4. Press PANIC/TEST on the door/window transmitter (or TEST on the motion sensor). The system stores the device's settings in the selected zone. The indicator for the selected zone lights steadily and a brief tone sounds to confirm the addition of the device (when the tone sounds your device has been learned by the base). The indicator for the next unassigned zone flashes. 5. Press CANCEL on the base to exit the learn mode. REMOVING A TRANSMITTER OR INFRARED MOTION SENSOR Follow these steps to remove an existing door/window transmitter, motion sensor, or other sensing/transmitting device from the system. When the device is removed from the system, the sensor no longer triggers the alarm. 1. Press LEARN on the base to enter the learn mode. Then enter the access code. The base sounds an ascending tone. 2. Enter the zone number for the device you want to remove. The corresponding zone indicator flashes. NOTE: If you decide not to remove the device for the zone selected, wait approximately 20 seconds for the base to clear the cancel function. 3. Press CANCEL while the zone indicator flashes. The indicator turns off and the device is removed from the system. 4. Press CANCEL again to exit the learn mode. ADDING A REMOTE CONTROL You can have up to three remote controls with this system. The procedure for adding a new remote control clears all the settings of existing remote controls from memory. This lets you remove a lost or missing remote control from the system. Each time you add a new remote control, you must follow the procedures described below for ALL remote controls you want to use. 1. Press LEARN. The LEARN indicator flashes. 2. Enter the access code. The base sounds an ascending tone, and the LEARN indicator lights steadily. 3. Press any two keys on the new remote control at the same time. The base sounds a short tone to confirm the addition of the remote control. NOTE: There is no visual indication to confirm the addition of a remote control. 4. Repeat Step 3 for each remote control you want to add. 5. Press CANCEL to exit the learn mode. Testing the Remote Control Follow these steps to test the remote control. 1. Press any two buttons on the remote control simultaneously. 2. The base sounds the burglar alarm. 3. Press the DISARM button to stop the base's alarm siren. INSTALLING THE DOOR/WINDOW TRANSMITTERS The system's door/window transmitters work with the supplied sensor to trigger the alarm. This system includes two normally-closed (N.C.) magnetic-switch sensors, each of which has two parts: the switch and the magnet that controls the switch. When the two parts are close together (1/4-inch or less), the switch is in the normal position. When the two parts are separated, the switch triggers the alarm. Magnetic-switch sensors are ideal for doors, movable windows, or any other part of your home that must be opened for entry. Magnetic-switch sensors are also available in normally-open (N.O.) models. The system can use normally-open (N.O.) switches, but we recommend you use normally-closed (N.C.) switches. Generally, you know on which doors/windows you want to install sensors, so you can mount the sensor in the desired location. However, you might need to check different locations before mounting the transmitter to make sure you can easily route wires and to confirm that the transmitter is within the base's range. We suggest you use tape to temporarily place and test the transmitter before permanent mounting. This can save you the trouble of remounting and rerouting wires later. Here is an outline of the process you follow to install the door/window sensors and transmitters. 1. Mount the door/window sensor in the desired location. 2. Choose a location for the transmitter. 3. Connect the sensor(s) to the transmitter. 4. Temporarily place the transmitter. 5. Test the transmitter's range. 6. Permanently mount the transmitter. 7. Test the installation. MOUNTING THE SENSOR NOTE: Do not mount the magnet directly on a metal surface (use a plastic or wood spacer). 1. Remove the covers from the switch and magnet using a small flatblade screwdriver. 2. Using two of the supplied wood screws, mount the sensor's switch section (the piece with the screw terminals) on a stationary surface such as a window sill, door frame, or wall. 3. Use two more screws to mount the sensor's magnet section on the movable surface, such as the window or door. NOTE: When you mount the sensor on a door, position it on the side away from the hinges (at the top or bottom). This triggers the alarm with the least amount of door movement. 4. Replace magnet's cover. Leave the cover off the switch so you can connect it to the transmitter. CHOOSING A MOUNTING LOCATION FOR THE TRANSMITTER You should mount each door/window transmitter. In the same room as the sensor So the wire to the sensor does not exceed 10 Choose the location for the transmitter, and then route and connect wires from the sensor to the transmitter as described in the next section. NOTE: You should temporarily place the transmitter in the selected location and test its range before permanently mounting it. CONNECTING THE SENSOR TO THE DOOR/WINDOW TRANSMITTER You can connect both normally-open and normally-closed sensors to the supplied door/window transmitter, but the procedures are slightly different for each. Your system comes with two normally-closed sensors. NOTES: You can connect more than one sensor to the transmitter to protect more than one window or door. However, to reduce the number of wires and provide a neater installation, we suggest you connect only one sensor to each transmitter. You will need wire (such as Radio Shack Cat. No. 278-862, not supplied) to do these procedures. The wire length from the sensor to the transmitter must not exceed 10 feet. To connect each of the supplied normally-closed sensors, follow these steps. 1. Remove the shorting bar from transmitter's COM and N.C. terminals, if it is attached. 2. Measure the amount of wire needed to connect the sensor to the transmitter, then cut the wire to the correct length. Strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from the wires ends, and twist the strands together. 3. Connect one of the sensor switch's screw terminals to the transmitter's N.C. screw terminal using the wire you just cut. 4. Using another piece of prepared wire, connect the sensor switch's other screw terminal to the transmitter's COM screw terminal. 5. Replace the switch's cover. Leave the cover off the transmitter so you can permanently mount it later. Note: If you connect more than one sensor to the N.O. terminal, connect them in parallel. To connect both normally-open and normally-closed sensors to a single transmitter (for example, a normally-closed sensor mounted on a window and a normally open sensor mounted on a door), follow these steps. 1. Remove the shorting bar from the transmitter's COM and N.C. terminals, if it is attached. 2. Measure the amount of wire needed to connect the sensors to the transmitter, then cut the wire to the correct length. Strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from the wires ends, and twist the strands together. 3. Connect one of the screw terminals of the normally-closed sensor switch to the transmitter's N.C. screw terminal using the wire you just cut. 4. Using another piece of wire, connect the other screw terminal of the normally-closed sensor switch to the transmitter's COM screw terminal. 5. Using another piece of wire, connect one of the screw terminals of the normally-open sensor switch to the transmitter's N.O. screw terminal. 6. Using another piece of wire, connect the other terminal of the normally-open sensor switch to the transmitter's COM screw terminal. 7. Replace the switch's cover. Leave the cover off the transmitter so you can permanently mount it later. TEMPORARILY PLACING THE DOOR/WINDOW TRANSMITTER Before you permanently mount the door/window transmitter, temporarily place it at the selected location and test its range. A simple way to temporarily place it is using tape. You might want to check several locations to determine the best permanent mounting location. TESTING THE TRANSMITTER'S RANGE 1. Press TEST on the base. The TEST indicator lights. 2. Press PANIC/TEST on the transmitter. The red indicator briefly flashes and a short confirmation tone sounds at the base. NOTE: You may need someone to stand next to the base to hear the tone. 3. After you confirm the transmitter is within range of the base, press TEST again. The TEST indicator turns off.
