Infrared Alarm System (490-0330) Installation Faxback Doc. # 17264 You must follow these steps to properly install the system. 1. Choose a mounting location. 2. Temporarily place the system at the mounting location. 3. Set the coverage area, and verify its effectiveness for your application. 4. Permanently mount the system. CHOOSING A MOUNTING LOCATION There are some things you should consider when you choose a mounting location for the alarm system. The system is designed to be mounted on a flat, smooth wall surface. You should mount the system where an intruder would move across the sensor's coverage area. To avoid false alarms, you should mount the system: Out of direct sunlight Away from heaters or other devices that quickly change temperature. Away from air conditioners or other devices that blow air on the sensor or create drafts in the coverage area. Out of areas frequented by pets or children. SENSOR COVERAGE Please refer to Faxback Doc. # 17259 for diagram of coverage area. NOTES: The sensor has a BLIND spot of about 6 1/4 feet directly in front of the system; this area has no coverage. Your sensor's coverage depends on the height of the sensor, the SENS setting, the shape of the protected area, and the texture of the walls and other surfaces in the area. You can use the supplied filter to disable the lower zone. TEMPORARILY PLACING THE SYSTEM Before you permanently mount the system, temporarily place the system at the selected location so you can check the coverage area. You might need to check several different locations to determine the best mounting location. One simple method for checking the coverage is to place the system on a stepladder at the desired height. SETTING THE COVERAGE AREA Follow these steps to set the systems coverage area. NOTE: Disarm the system, if necessary, by entering the security code (see "Arming and Disarming"). Faxback Doc. # 17265. 1. Confirm that the area is clear of people, pets, and other potential causes of false alarms. 2. Walk around the protected area and look at the sensor's indicator. When the sensor detects any motion, TEST/ALARM flashes. 3. If the system does not detect motion when you are within the desired protected area, do any or all of the following: Increase the system's sensitivity (see "Setting the Sensitivity"). Set PULSE to 1 (see "Setting the Pulse Switch"). Change the system's location. If the system detects motion when you are outside the desired protected area, do any or all of the following: Find what is causing the false alarm and remove it from the area. Decrease the system's sensitivity (see "Setting the Sensitivity"). Set PULSE to 2 (see "Setting the Pulse Switch"). Change the system's location. Disable the lower zones using the supplied filter (see "Using the Lower Zone Filter"). SETTING THE SENSITIVITY The SENS control (in the compartment on the system's left side) sets the sensor's range. The control is preset to its maximum at the factory. Follow these steps to adjust the sensitivity. 1. Use a small Phillips screwdriver to loosen the screw on the cover at the systems left side and open the cover. 2. Use a small Phillips screwdriver to turn the SENS clockwise to increase sensitivity. Turn SENS counterclockwise to decrease sensitivity. 3. Close the cover and secure it by tightening the covers screw. SETTING THE PULSE SWITCH As an intruder moves across the zones, the system detects pulses. The PULSE switch setting determines how many pulses the system must detect before it triggers the alarm. The switch is set to 2 at the factory. 1. Use a small Phillips screwdriver to loosen the screw on systems left side and open the cover. 2. Set the PULSE switch to 1 to have the alarm sound immediately after the sensor detects one pulse. This provides the highest level of security. Set the PULSE switch to 2 to have the alarm sound after the sensor detects two pulses. This reduces the chances of false alarms. 3. Close the compartment cover and tighten the cover's screw. USING THE LOWER ZONE FILTER If you experience frequent false alarms caused by pets or small children, you can disable the lower zones by using the supplied filter. To install the filter, insert its side tabs into the slots on the sensor window. MOUNTING THE SENSOR After you determine where you want to mount the system and test its coverage, follow these steps to mount it on the wall. NOTES: Disarm the system, if necessary, by entering the security code (see Arming and Disarming"). Faxback Doc. # 17265. The supplied screws are suitable for mounting the system on a wood surface. If you are mounting the system on sheet rock, masonry, or another surface, use the appropriate screw inserts or other mounting techniques. Consult your local hardware store for the proper mounting hardware. 1. Mark the positions for the two supplied wood screws on the mounting surface, 3 & 15/16 inches apart. 2. Drill pilot holes slightly smaller than the screws at the locations. 3. Drive the screws into the wall, letting the heads extend about 1/8 inch. 4. Remove the tape from the tamper switch. The switch pops up. 5. Align the two keyhole slots on the bottom of the system with the screw heads in the wall. Then press the system down to secure it in place. This turns off the tamper switch.
