Automatic Message Dialer (490-0433C) Operation Faxback Doc. # 19244 STORING TELEPHONE NUMBERS IN MEMORY Follow these steps to store the number(s) you want the dialer to dial. The number can contain up to 15 digits including pauses. 1. Lift the dialer's cover. 2. Press ENTER. A short tone sounds. The STORE indicator flashes. 3. Enter the telephone number you want the dialer to dial, using the dialer's number keys and READY/PAUSE button. The STORE indicator lights steadily and a short tone sounds as you enter each digit. NOTES: If you make a mistake while you enter a number, begin again from Step 1. We recommend that you program the dialer to call a friend, relative, or neighbor. That person can then call the police if necessary, or call you back to see if everything is fine. You should not program the dialer to call the police directly, unless your local police department has a special line for emergency dialers. Contact the police department for more information. 4. Press STORE. A short tone sounds. 5. Assign the telephone number to one of the three memory locations by pressing 1, 2, or 3. Two short tones sound and the STORE indicator turns off. 6. If desired, repeat Steps 1 through 4 to enter telephone numbers for the other two memory locations. NOTES: If there is no telephone number in memory, the OPERATION and MEMORY indicators flash and you cannot set the dialer to the ready-to-dial mode. The dialer is intended only for use with residential phone systems. You can store telephone numbers during an AC power failure if the backup batteries are good. However, to preserve battery power, the STORE indicator turns off if you do not press a key within about 5 seconds after the previous key press. If this happens, you must start again from Step 1. During AC power operation, there is no time limit for entering digits. ADDING A PAUSE TO A NUMBER If you use the dialer on a telephone system that requires you to dial an access code (9, for example) for an outside line, you might need to add a pause after the access code to allow time for the outside line to connect. To add a pause, press READY/PAUSE after you enter the access code or whenever else you want the dialer to pause. Each pause entry causes the dialer to pause for about 2 seconds. A READY/PAUSE entry counts as one digit in the dialer memory. USING THE NUMBER LABEL After you store the telephone numbers, write the names associated with the numbers on the dialer's number label. Remove the label's plastic cover by inserting a pointed object (such as the end of a paper clip) in the notch on the side of the cover, and pressing the cover to one side. Write the names using a pencil, in case you later need to change the names. Replace the cover. CLEARING A TELEPHONE NUMBER FROM MEMORY When you store a new number in a memory location, you automatically erase the old number. To clear a telephone number without storing a new number, follow these steps: 1. Press ENTER. A short tone sounds and the STORE indicator flashes. 2. Press STORE. A short tone sounds and the STORE indicator stops flashing. 3. Press the memory location number for the telephone number you want to clear. Two short tones sound and the STORE indicator turns off. There must be at least one telephone number in memory for you to activate the dialer. If you clear all three numbers from memory, the OPERATION and MEMORY indicators flash. RECORDING THE OUTGOING MESSAGE Your outgoing message can be up to 18 seconds long on the supplied 20- second cassette. To record you outgoing message, follow these steps: 1. Press MAKE MSG. A tone sounds and the MAKE MSG indicator lights. 2. When the MAKE MSG indicator lights, speak your message in a normal tone from about 6 to 8 inches from the microphone (at the front left of the dialer). When the tape reaches the end, it automatically stops, the MAKE MSG indicator turns off, and two short tones sound. If you finish speaking before the tape stops, let the tape continue to move until it stops automatically. If you want to re-record the message, start again from Step 1. Each time you record a message on the cassette, you erase the previous message. CHECKING THE OUTGOING MESSAGE Follow these steps to check the outgoing message after you record it. 1. Set MONITOR (on the right side of the dialer) to IN. 2. Press HEAR MSG. A short tone sounds, the HEAR MSG indicator lights, and the message plays. When the tape reaches the end and stops, two short tones sound and the HEAR MSG indicator turns off. If you want to re-record the message, start again from Step 1 of "Recording the Message," above. 3. Set MONITOR to OFF. TESTING/ACTIVATING THE DIALER Before you can activate the dialer, you must do the following. Correctly install and connect the dialer. Record a message on the endless-loop cassette tape. Store at least one telephone number in memory. When programming emergency numbers and/or making test calls to emergency numbers: 1. Remain on the line and briefly explain to the dispatcher the reason for the call. 2. Perform such activities in the off-peak hours, such as early morning or late evenings. Follow these steps to test and activate the dialer: 1. Pull the RESET/CASSETTE RELEASE lever toward you and release it. 2. Press READY/PAUSE. Three short tones sound and the READY indicator lights. This shows that the dialer is in the "ready-to-dial" mode. 3. To manually activate the dialer, press DIAL. (Or, press the remote activation switch if you installed one.) A triggered alarm system automatically activates the dialer. When you or the alarm system activates the dialer, it dials the number in the first memory location and immediately begins playing the recorded message. "The Dialer plays the message five times," even if the number is busy or not answered. If the call is answered during playback, the person hears the message. After the dialer plays the message five times, it automatically disconnects the call, waits about 10 seconds, and dials the next number. If you set MONITOR to IN, the recorded message and the voice of the person who answers the call sound from the dialer's speaker. If you do not want the message and voice to sound, set MONITOR to OUT. After the dialer plays the message for each telephone number, it stops and the READY indicator rapidly flashes. NOTE: The dialer dials all three numbers, regardless of whether or not any call was answered. The dialer dials the numbers and sends the message again whether or not it is activated again. To cancel the ready-to-dial mode, pull the RESET/CASSETTE RELEASE lever toward you. The READY indicator turns off. To reset the dialer to the ready-to-dial mode, press READY/PAUSE. CAUTION: You cannot set the dialer to the ready-to-dial mode if the NO or NC loop of the alarm system or remote switch is triggered. (The READY indicator does not light when you press READY/PAUSE.) Be sure you return the alarm system or remote switch to its normal (untriggered) condition before you set the dialer to the ready-to-dial mode. NOTES: During an AC power failure, the backup batteries power the dialer. To preserve battery power, the READY indicator does not light during a power failure, but the dialer still operates. If the endless loop tape is broken or dirty, or if you are not using an endless loop tape, the dialer automatically cancels the ready-to-dial mode within about 5 minutes. The NO (normally open) loop, NC (normally closed) loop, and DIAL switch activate the dialer independently of each other. The NO loop activates the dialer even when the NC loop is triggered, and the NC loop activates the dialer even when the NO loop is triggered. The DIAL switch input activates the dialer even when both NO and NC loops are triggered. If a loop returns to its normal condition after a violation, further violations on the loop activate the dialer. (cs 12/20/95)
