3-Way Wall Switch Set (610-2686) Installation Faxback Doc. # 19302 Your Radio Shack 3-Way Wall Switch Set replaces standard 3-way switch installations (two switches that control one light or appliance). However, with the Radio Shack switch set you can use any of Radio Shack's Plug `n Power controllers to turn the light on and off by remote control, in addition to the usual manual operation. The switch set is simple to install, but if you have no knowledge of home wiring systems, you might want to call a professional electrician to install the switches for you. Before you begin installation, turn off the circuit breaker that provides power for the switches you are replacing. INSTALLING THE MASTER SWITCH 1. Remove the switch plate from one of the existing switches and remove the screws that hold the switch in the electrical box. 2. Disconnect the "house wire" from the terminal marked COM or COMMON on the old switch. Using one of the supplied wire nuts, connect that wire to the blue wire on the "master" (larger) Radio Shack switch. 3. Disconnect the other two house wires from the old switch and connect them to the master switch using the following guidelines. a. If the house wires are color coded (red and black) connect them to the matching wires on the master switch. b. If the house wires are color coded but are not red and black or if both wires are the same color, connect one of the house wires to each of the remaining master switch wires and proceed. A later test will assure the proper connections. 4. Attach the master switch to the electrical box, and set the house code and unit code as described in the owner's manual for your Plug `n Power controller. 5. Replace the switch cover, but do not turn on the circuit breaker until you have installed the companion switch. INSTALLING THE COMPANION SWITCH 1. Remove the switch plate from the other existing switch and remove the screws that hold the switch in its electrical box. 2. Disconnect the house wire from the terminal marked COM or COMMON on the old switch. Using one of the supplied wire nuts, connect that wire to either of the blue wires on the companion (smaller) Radio Shack switch. Mark this connection with a piece of tape. 3. Disconnect the other two wires from the old switch and connect them to the companion switch using the following guidelines. a. If these two house wires are red and black, connect the two red wires and connect the black house wire to remaining blue wire on the companion switch. b. If the house wires are color coded but are not red and black, connect the same color house wire to the companion switch's red wire as you connected to the master switch's red wire. Connect the other house wire to the remaining blue wire on the companion switch. c. If both house wires are the same color, connect one of the house wires to each of the remaining companion switch wires, and proceed. 4. Attach the companion switch to the electrical box, and replace the switch cover. TESTING 1. Turn on the circuit breaker and set the disable switch on the master switch unit to the right. 2. Press the button on each new switch to be sure that they both control the light properly. 3. If the light does not come on, turn off the circuit breaker again. Then, on the companion switch, reverse the connections for the red wire and the blue wire you did not mark with tape. Finally, repeat the preceding test. "There is always some power flowing to the light, unless you set the disable switch to the left. Be sure to set the switch to the left when changing the light bulb." (CS 1/10/96)
