Remote Control Talking Alarm System (490-0740) Installation Faxback Doc. # 31171 To install this system, you must be familiar with your vehicle's wiring system. For example, you must be able to identify the following: Constant +12 Volts Accessory terminal with +12 volts only when the vehicle's ignition is on or in the accessory (ACC) position. Electric Cooling Fan Motor (if so equipped) If necessary, contact your vehicle's dealer for more information about your vehicle's wiring system. You will need: 1. Drill with 1/8- and 3/8-inch bits 2. Phillips head screwdriver 3. Wrench (for disconnecting the vehicle's negative battery cable) CAUTIONS: Be sure your vehicle has a 12-volt DC, negative-ground electrical system. Before you begin installation, check your vehicle's Owner's Manual to see if you need to disable the vehicle's safety systems. For your safety and to protect your alarm system and vehicle, disconnect your vehicles negative (-) battery terminal cable before you begin. As you install the system, place a check mark next to each step. MOUNTING THE CONTROL CENTER NOTES: Be sure the bracket makes contact with a metal part of your vehicle's body. To get the most motion sensor sensitivity, choose a location for the mounting bracket where you can position the control center horizontally. 1. Select a location for the control center on the engine compartment's interior wall. CAUTIONS: Do not mount to your vehicle's engine or choose a location where you might drill into your vehicle's wiring or suspension system. Be sure that each of the wires on the wiring harness can reach its connection point from the selected location. 2. Twist the knobs on the sides of the control center counterclockwise and remove the mounting bracket from the control center. 3. Using the mounting bracket as a guide, drill four 1/8-inch (3.5 mm) pilot holes into the mounting surface. NOTE: For a more stable installation, we recommend you do not drill four holes side-by-side. 4. Secure the bracket by inserting four of the supplied screws and washers through the bracket and into a grounded metal surface, and tightening the screws. 5. Use the screws with knob ends that you removed in Step 2 to attach the control center to the mounting bracket. POSITIONING THE ANTENNA The antenna wire receives the remote arm/disarm/valet signal. Route this wire vertically behind the grille, away from the fan, or in another location where the reception is not blocked by the vehicle's metal chassis. MOUNTING THE INDICATOR 1. Select a location on the dashboard that you can easily see from outside the vehicle. 2. Push on the LED, grasp the rubber flange, and gently pull the indicator out of the mounting collar. 3. Drill a 3/8-inch (10 mm) hole in the mounting surface. CAUTION: Be careful not to drill into anything behind the dashboard. 4. Insert the indicator into the mounting collar from the back of the dashboard. 5. Secure the plain washer, lock washer, and nut on the collar from the back of the dashboard panel. 6. Insert the indicator into the mounting collar from the back of the dashboard. 7. Connect the indicator's plug to the wires with matching connector on the control center. CONNECTING THE WIRING HARNESS The wiring harness connects the control center to the 12-volt DC power source, the accessory (ACC) power, and the cooling fan motor. CAUTIONS: Avoid sharp edges and hot or moving parts. Be sure your vehicle's negative (-) battery terminal cable is disconnected. CONNECTING TO POWER Connect the wiring harness's red wire with in-line fuse to a continuous 12- volt power source. You can connect it directly to the battery's positive (+) terminal or to a non-switched fuse terminal (that the vehicle's ignition does not turn on and off). CONNECTING TO GROUND The black ground wire with O-ring connector comes attached to the control center's mounting bracket. When you mount the control center, the bracket should make contact with a metal part of your vehicle's body. CONNECTING TO AN ACCESSORY LEAD Connect the wiring harness's blue wire to an accessory (ACC) terminal in the fuse block that only provides power when the vehicle's ignition is on or in the ACC position. CONNECTING TO A COOLING FAN LEAD If your vehicle has an electric engine cooling fan that turns on after you turn off the ignition, you must connect the supplied yellow cooling fan wire using the supplied wire connector. The connector extends the yellow wire from the control center to the lead on the fan housing that goes to the thermostatic switch. This lead has +12 V when the fan is on and is grounded when the fan is off to prevent the fan from causing false alarms. If your vehicle does not have a cooling fan that turns on to cool the engine, cut off the yellow wire as short as possible. COMPLETING THE INSTALLATION CAUTIONS: Your vehicle's negative battery cable should be disconnected. After you complete all connections, recheck them to be sure they are correct. Reconnect the vehicle's negative (-) battery cable and ensure all other electric devices in your vehicle are operating properly. NOTE: You must reset your clock and any other memory devices in your vehicle. (SP/RF 3/8/96)
