Vehicle Alarm System (490-0772) Installation Faxback Doc. # 32191 This alarm system includes a main control center, two keychain remote transmitters, a starter disable module, a status indicator, and mounting hardware. Before you install the system, read the entire installation section and decide where to mount the control center and the starter disable module, and where to route all wiring. The control center and starter disable module mount in the engine compartment. The wiring harness connect the control center to the vehicle battery's positive terminal, the cooling fan, an accessory (ACC) terminal that has power only where your vehicle's ignition is on, the remote indicator, and the starter disable module. To install this system, you must be familiar with your vehicle's wiring system. For example, you must be able to identify the following: Accessory terminal with + 12 volts only when the vehicle's ignition is on or in the accessory (ACC) position. Chassis ground Constant + 12 volts Electric cooling fan motor (if so equipped) Starter solenoid If necessary, contact your vehicle's dealer for more information. In addition, you need the following tools: Drill with 1/8-and 3/8-inch bits Phillips head screwdriver Wrench (for disconnecting the vehicle's negative battery cable) CAUTIONS: Be sure your vehicle has a 12-volt DC, negative-ground electrical system. Be sure you begin installation, check your vehicle's owner's manual to see if you need to disable any vehicle safety systems. For safety and to protect your alarm system and vehicle, disconnect your vehicle's negative (-) battery terminal cable before you begin. NOTE: After you complete installation and reconnect the battery cable, you must reset your vehicle's clock and any other electronic accessories. MOUNTING THE CONTROL CENTER 1. Select a location for the control center on the engine compartment's interior wall. CAUTIONS: Do not mount to your vehicle's engine or choose a location where you might drill into your vehicle's wiring or suspension systems. Be sure that each of the wires on the wiring harnesses can reach its connection point from the selected location. Because the ground wire is attached to the control center's mounting bracket, the bracket must make contact with a metal part of your vehicle's body that is not insulated from the main chassis by plastic parts. 2. Remove the mounting bracket from the control center. 3. Using the mounting bracket as a guide, drill three 1/8-inch (3.2mm) pilot holes into the mounting surface. 4. Secure the bracket by threading 3 of the supplied screws through the washers and bracket into the holes in the mounting surface. 5. Use the bolt, nut, and washer you removed in Step 2 to secure the control center to the mounting bracket. NOTE: Be sure to connect the wire marked TO GROUND to the bolt. POSITIONING THE ANTENNA The antenna wire receives the remote arm/disarm/valet/panic signal. Route this wire straight up and down behind the grille (away from the fan, if your vehicle has one) or in another location where the reception is the least blocked by the vehicle's metal chassis. MOUNTING THE INDICATOR 1. Select a location on the dashboard that you can easily see from out- side the vehicle. 2. Push on the indicator, grasp the rubber flange, and gently pull the indicator out of the mounting collar. 3. Drill a 3/8-inch (10 mm) hole in the mounting surface. CAUTION: Be careful not to drill into anything behind the dashboard. 4. Press the collar into the hole from the front of the dashboard. 5. Secure the collar with the plain washer, lock washer, and nut from the back of the dashboard panel. 6. Insert the indicator into the mounting collar from the back of the dashboard, and connect the indicator's plug to the three wires with the matching connector on the control center. CONNECTING THE WIRING HARNESSES The wiring harnesses connect the control center to the 12-volt DC power source, accessory (ACC) power, and the electric cooling fan wire. CAUTIONS: Avoid sharp edges and hot or moving parts. Be sure your vehicle's negative (-) battery terminal cable is disconnected before you make any of these connections. Connecting to Power Connect the red wire with the in-line fuse (labeled TO 12V CAR BATTERY) to a continuous 12-volt power source. You can connect it directly to the battery's positive (+) terminal or to a non-switched fuse terminal (that the vehicle's ignition does not turn on and off). Connecting to Ground The black ground wire with O-ring connector (labeled TO GROUND) attaches to the control center's mounting bracket. When you mount the control center, the bracket should make contact with a metal part of your vehicle's body. Connecting to an Accessory Lead Connect the wiring harness's blue wire (labeled TO ACC) to an accessory terminal in the fuse block that only provides power when the vehicle's ignition is on or in the ACC position. Connecting the Cooling Fan Lead If your vehicle has an electric engine cooling fan that turns on after you turn off the ignition, you must connect the yellow wire from the control center to the lead on the fan housing that goes to the thermostatic switch. This side has + 12V when the fan is on, and is grounded when the fan is off. Follow these steps to connect the control center to the cooling fan lead. 1. Strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from one end of the supplied long yellow wire. 2. Connect the unstripped end of the long yellow wire to the fan motor's switched wire using a splicing connector, as follows. a. Slip the slotted side of the splicing connector over the fan motor's switched wire. b. Insert the yellow wire all the way into the splicing connector's other slot. c. Use a pair of pliers to squeeze down the metal blade. Then fold over and latch the plastic tab. 3. Route the stripped end of the yellow wire to the control center and strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from the center's yellow wire marked TO FAN. 4. Twist the stripped parts of the wires together, then insert the stripped ends fully into the supplied wire nut and twist the nut clockwise until the wires are firmly secured. This connection prevents the fan from causing the alarm to sound a false alert. If your vehicle does not have an electric fan, connect the yellow wire to the vehicle's frame, firewall, or the alarm mounting bracket using an existing bolt, or cut it off as short as possible. INSTALLING THE STARTER DISABLE MODULE 1. Locate your vehicle's starter solenoid. This is the box or junction point where the battery's large red cable ends. 2. Choose a location near your vehicle's starter solenoid to mount the starter disable module. 3. Using the module's holes as a guide, drill two pilot holes inside the engine compartment. CAUTION: Be careful not to drill into the vehicle's engine, suspension system, wiring, or through the fender. 4. Secure the module by threading the supplied screws into the mounting holes and into the engine compartment wall. 5. Locate the smaller wire that connects the starter solenoid to the ignition switch on the steering column and disconnect it. 6. Reconnect your vehicle's negative (-) battery cable and try to start the engine to confirm that it does not start. 7. After you confirm that the engine does not start, disconnect your vehicle's negative battery cable again. Then cut the small ignition switch wire near the solenoid. 8. Insert one of the starter disable module's short red wires into one slot of one of the supplied red splicing connectors. 9. Insert one cut end of the small ignition switch wire into the red splicing connector's other slot. 10. Squeeze the red splicing connector's metal blade down, then fold over and latch the plastic tab. 11. Repeat Steps 8-10 to connect the starter disable module's other cut end of the ignition switch wire, using the last supplied red splicing connector. 12. Reconnect the small wire to the starter solenoid. 13. Route the starter disable module's yellow and black wires to the control center and connect them using the attached black connectors. COMPLETING THE INSTALLATION CAUTION: Your vehicle's negative battery cable should still be disconnected. After you complete all connections, recheck them to be sure they are correct. Reconnect the vehicle's negative (-) battery cable and ensure all other electric devices in your vehicle are operating properly. NOTE: You must reset your clock and any other memory devices in your vehicle once you reconnect the battery cable. (LB/all-04/23/96)
