Two-Zone Remote Keypad Burglar Alarm Control Center (490-0451) Glossary of Terms Faxback Doc. # 33417 Alarm Center - The main control panel for the alarm system. Alarm Siren - A siren, usually mounted outside the home, that produces a loud noise to help attract attention or startle intruders when it is activated. Alarm System - Your installed security system, consisting of the alarm center, its components and sensors, and accessories you install. Area Sensor - A sensor (such as a motion detector) designed to protect an inner space of a protected area. (See also Sensor and Motion Detector). Arm and Disarm - Terms for on and off. When you arm the system, you turn on protection. When you disarm the system, you turn it off (except in the panic/tamper zone). Automatic Telephone Dialer - A device that automatically dials one or more preprogrammed telephone numbers and plays a prerecorded voice or coded message giving the nature and location of the alarm. Bypass - Term for temporarily removing a zone from coverage. A piece of wire or a metal jumper can be used at the alarm center to bypass a zone. Delayed Zone (Loop) - An area protected by one or more sensors that trigger the alarm only after a preset time has elapsed. You use a delayed zone to allow you enough time to exit and enter your home or office and arm and disarm the system without accidentally sounding the alarm. See also Entry/ Exit Delay. Entry/Exit Delay - The amount of time it takes you to exit and enter your home or office and arm and disarm the alarm center. You can adjust the alarm system's entry and exit delay times separately, from 0 to 45 seconds. Glass Breakage Detector - A sensor applied to a protected surface (usually glass in a door or window). If the protected material is broken, the circuit in the detector opens, triggering an alarm signal. Metallic foil tape is a type of glass breakage detector. Infrared Motion Detector - A sensor that detects changes in infrared light and heat within a protected area. When an intruder moves into the protected area, the detector senses the change in light and heat intensity, and signals the alarm center to sound the alarm. Instant Zone (Loop) - An area protected by one or more sensors that instantly signal the alarm center to sound the alarm if violated. Key Switch - A type of sensor in which a key is required to open and close the contacts. Key switches help detect tampering or forced entry in an enclosed area such as a gun cabinet or the alarm center itself. Loop - An electrical circuit consisting of one or more sensors connected in series. (See also Zone.) Magnet Switch - A type of sensor in which a magnet holds the contacts either open or closed. When a magnet switch is moved (such as when a door is opened), the absence of the magnet causes the contacts to either open or close, signaling the alarm center to sound the alarm. Motion Detector - A type of sensor that signals the alarm center to sound the alarm when it detects motion in a protected area. Infrared and ultrasonic are common types of motion detectors (see Infrared Motion Detector and Ultrasonic Motion Detector). Normally Closed (N.C.) - A type of switch in which the contacts are normally closed or together (electrically conductive). Metallic foil tape is an example of a normally-closed switch. Normally Open (N.O.) - A type of switch in which the contacts are normally open or apart (electrically non-conductive). A doorbell is an example of a normally-open switch. Panic Button - A sensor, usually a normally-open switch, that instantly signals the alarm center to sound the alarm when you press it. Panic Zone (Loop) - An area protected by one or more sensors that instantly signal the alarm center to sound the alarm if violated, even if the alarm system is not armed. You can install sensors such as panic buttons and tamper switches to form a panic zone. (See also Panic Button and Tamper Switch.) Pass Code - The code you use to arm and disarm the alarm center. The default pass code for this alarm system is 1234, but you can also set and use your own 4-digit pass code. Perimeter Sensor - A sensor designed to protect entryways or barriers such as outer doors or windows, that lead to another protected area. (See also Sensor.) Plunger Switch - A type of switch in which the pressure of a door or window holds the contacts either open or closed. When the door or window is opened, the contacts either open or close, signaling the alarm center to sound the alarm. Pre-alarm - A sounder device that gives an audible warning indicating that a violation has occurred and that the alarm will sound if the system is not disarmed within a specific time. Remote Keypad - A device that lets you arm and disarm the alarm system away from the alarm center and view alarm status information. Security Strobe - A light, usually mounted outside, that flashes or shines brightly to help attract attention or deter intruders when the alarm sounds Sensor - A device designed to produce a signal or show an indication in response to an event or stimulus within its detection zone. Devices such as plunger switches, metallic foil tape and motion detectors can be used as sensors. (See also Zone, Area Sensor, Perimeter Sensor.) Tamper Switch - A sensor, usually mounted on the alarm center, that instantly triggers the alarm if the alarm center is violated. (See also Panic Zone [Loop] and Key Switch.) Ultrasonic Motion Detector - A type of sensor that transmits a high frequency sound, which is beyond your range of hearing. This sound bounces off objects in the protected area, and returns to the detector. If any object moves into the protected area, the detector senses the change in the reflected sound and signals the alarm center to sound the alarm. Vibration Detector - A sensor that signals the alarm center to sound the alarm when it detects vibration or movement. Violation - A zone or loop condition detected by a sensor when the system is armed, such as that caused by an opened door or broken window. Zone - An area protected by one or more sensors, such as door/window sensors, motion detectors, and other sensing/transmitting devices. Your alarm system has an instant zone, a delayed zone, and a panic/tamper zone. (See also Delayed Zone [Loop], Panic Zone [Loop], Instant Zone [Loop], and Loop.) (EB 5/25/96)
