Safehouse Quiet Reset Smoke Alarm (490-0458) RV's Faxback Doc. # 34307 RECREATIONAL VEHICLES This detector is listed by Underwriter's Laboratories for use in recrea- tional vehicles. Install the smoke detector in accordance with NFPA Standard 501C. 1. a. In mobile homes and recreational vehicles built after 1978 that were designed to be energy efficient, smoke alarms should be installed as described in Faxback Doc. # 34306. b. In older mobile homes and RV's, uninsulated metal outside walls and roofs can transfer heat and cold from outside. Layers of hotter or colder air surround the uninsulated walls and can prevent the smoke from reaching a smoke alarm. Therefore, in poorly insulated mobile homes and RV's, place smoke alarms on an inside wall, 6 inches from the ceiling. 2. Locate smoke alarms as close to the sleeping area as possible. 3. Do not locate alarms in the kitchen or bathroom areas. Cooking fumes and high humidity can trigger nuisance alarms. 4. Do not locate smoke alarms close to exhaust fans or air conditioning units which could draw smoke away from the alarm. WARNING: When installing alarms in recreational vehicles, test the alarm, as described in the operation section of this manual, when the vehicle has been in storage, before each trip, and at least once per week during use.
