Safehouse Quiet Reset Smoke Alarm
(490-0458) Installation Faxback Doc. # 34309

1. Open the cover from the smoke detector.

2. Remove battery to locate second screw hole.

3. IF MOUNTING SMOKE ALARM ON A WALL - Mount the smoke alarm on a wall so
the cover's hinge faces the floor and the arrow indicating where to
open faces the ceiling. This mounting position ensures that the cover
hangs open as a visual reminder that the battery is not installed and
the smoke alarm is not operating. This position also lets you see the
mounting screw holes for easy screw installation.

4. Insert a plastic anchor into each hole.

5. Using the screws designed for the anchors, secure the detector to the
    wall or ceiling.

NOTE: This equipment should be installed in accordance with the National
Fire Protection Association Standard 74. (National Fire Protection
C, Batterymarch Park, Quincy, MA 02169).

TO ACTIVATE THE ALARM-PAUSE FEATURE

Press and hold the test button for a minimum of 5 seconds. Release the
button. The Alarm-Pause is activated. In this mode, the unit should not
react to smoke (by sounding an alarm) for a period of approximately 8
minutes, unless the concentration becomes heavy, approaching a 4 percent
per foot obscuration. During the Alarm-Pause period, the smoke alarm beeps
approximately once every 60 seconds alerting the household that the smoke
alarm is in the Alarm-Pause mode.

WARNING: If you have any doubt as to the cause of an alarm, always assume
that the alarm was caused by an actual fire and follow your fire
emergency plans. Do not assume the alarm is a nuisance alarm and
push the test button to activate the Alarm-Pause feature. You
could lose valuable time for escape.

VARIATIONS IN LENGTH OF THE ALARM-PAUSE PERIOD

The period of the Alarm-Pause can vary depending upon the amount of smoke
present. Under no-smoke conditions, the Alarm-Pause feature activates for
approximately 8 minutes after you release the test button.

When heavy smoke is present, the Alarm-Pause period is the shortest. Refer
to the diagram that illustrates the relationship between smoke density and
the possible Alarm-Pause period time, below.

With a level of smoke density of 1.5 percent per foot obscuration, a
relatively small amount of smoke, the Alarm-Pause feature activates for
approximately 6 minutes. When the level reaches 3 percent per foot
obscuration, a much heavier smoke concentration, the feature operates for
about 4 minutes. As the level of smoke density approaches 4 percent per
foot obscuration, a very heavy level of smoke, the smoke alarm overrides
the Alarm-Pause features and the alarm sounds.

TESTING THE ALARM

Before Installation

1. Connect the battery to the alarm. If the alarm has been stored in low
humidity areas, electrostatic charges can build-up within the alarm
systems housing. If such charges are present, the initial sounding,
upon connecting a battery or pressing the test button, can be much
longer than normal. If this occurs, gently wipe the inside and the
outside of the plastic cover with a clean, damp cloth.

2. Check that the LED operating light flashes approximately once every 60
    seconds.

3. Press and hold the test button until the alarm sounds. You might have
to hold the button in for up to 20 seconds before the alarm, a
    continuous sound, activates.

NOTE: Once you release the test button, the Alarm-Pause feature
activates. In that case, the alarm does not sound for
approximately eight minutes unless a very heavy buildup of smoke
           occurs during that period.

After Installation

1. Hold a piece of cotton string with a pair of pliers. Allow about 2
inches of string to dangle from the end of the pliers. Light the string
with a safety match and hold the smoking string about 6 inches below,
and to one side, of the smoke alarm. Blow the smoke toward the alarm
    until the alarm sounds.

2. Once the horn sounds, press and hold the test button for a minimum of
15 seconds. Then, release the button. The horn stops sounding. The
    Alarm-Pause feature is activated.

3. Hold the smoking string beneath the alarm, once again. The alarm should
not sound as long as the density is below the limits noted before.
However, the alarm should beep approximately once every 60 seconds to
indicate that the Alarm-Pause feature has been Activated.

4. At least once a week, press and hold the test button until the alarm
sounds. Then, release the button. NOTE: The Alarm-Pause feature
activates for about 8 minutes after you release the button.
