Safehouse Quiet Reset Smoke Alarm (490-0458) Care and Maintenance Faxback Doc. # 34311 BATTERY REPLACEMENT Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-553, Eveready 216, 522, 1222, Mallory MN1604, and Gold Peak 1604P are recommended replacement batteries for use in this smoke alarm. The typical battery provides power for the alarm for about 1 year under normal use. When the battery reaches the end of its useful life, an intermittent beeping, the low battery warning signal, indicates the need to replace the battery promptly. The warning sound operates for up to 30 days. SIMPLE MAINTENANCE To keep the unit working properly, vacuum the interior of the alarm every 6 months. Open the cover and gently vacuum the unit. Be careful not to touch the interior with the vacuum nozzle. Problems are indicated by the following: 1. The alarm does not sound when you press the test button. 2. The alarm does not sound during the smoke test when the alarm is not in the pause mode. 3. The operating light remains on or off rather than flashing once every 60 seconds, when the unit is not on alarm. Try the following: 1. Inspect for obvious damage. 2. Check that you have installed the correct battery. 3. Check that battery installation is correct. 4. Gently vacuum the interior as suggested above. 5. Replace the battery. If these procedures do not correct the problem, do not attempt repairs yourself. Bring the unit to your local Radio Shack store assistance. FALSE ALARMS Abnormal air conditions might cause a highly sensitive smoke alarm to give a false alarm. Your local fire department treats every fire alarm in the same way, false or not. When you hear the alarm sound, follow your fire emergency plan. Do not try to decide, on your own, if the alarm is false or not. (LB/EB 08/01/96)
