The instructions below are for using the IC Extractor, the IC Inserter, and the Three-Prong Part Retriever. USING THE IC EXTRACTOR AND INSERTER WARNING: When working on ICs or other static-sensitive components, you should always wear a static-draining wrist strap (not supplied) to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD). Your local Radio Shack store sells static-draining wrist straps (Cat. No. 276-2397). Follow these steps to use the IC extractor. 1. Separate the extractor's arms and press them on the IC's sides until the two metal clips securely clamp around the chip. The spring-loaded securers hold the chip to prevent it from slipping. 2. Grip the textured portions on the extractor's arms and close them tightly. Extract the IC from its socket. NOTE: Grip the arms evenly so you do not bend the IC's pins. 3. Separate the arms to release the IC. WARNING: To prevent possible damage from static electricity, do not touch the IC with your hands. Follow these steps to use the IC inserter. 1. Place the inserter's arms on the IC's sides and clamp the IC tightly with the two arms. WARNING: To prevent possible damage from static electricity, do not touch the IC with your hands. 2. Move the IC above the socket and align the IC's pins with the socket's pin holes. Press down until the IC securely fits into the socket. 3. Separate the arms to release the IC. USING THE THREE-PRONG PART RETRIEVER Follow these steps to use the three-prong part retriever. 1. Place the retriever above the part and press the injector on top to open the three prongs. 2. Release the injector to retrieve the part. 3. Withdraw the retriever to remove the parts. (ALL-08/18/95)
