Model 160 Moviecorder (160-0861) Power Sources Faxback Doc. # 15133 SELECTING A POWER SOURCE You can power the camcorder using either the AC adapter/charger and DC connecting cord or the battery. Using the Adapter/Charger Follow these steps to power the camcorder using the AC adapter/charger. 1. Connect one of the DC connecting cord's plugs to the DC OUT jack on the AC adapter/charger. 2. Connect the cord's other plug to the DC IN 6.5V jack on the camcorder. 3. Insert the adapter/charger's AC plug into a standard AC outlet. The power indicator on the adapter/charger lights. You can now operate the camcorder. CAUTION: Do not use the AC-160 Adapter/charger for any purpose other than charging the supplied battery pack or supplying power to this camcorder. NOTE: You can use the AC adapter/charger in any country where the AC voltage is between 100 and 240 volts. A built-in circuit automatically adjusts for different voltages. Use an optional AC plug adapter when necessary. See "Powering the Camcorder in Other Countries." POWERING THE CAMCORDER IN OTHER COUNTRIES You can use the battery to power the camcorder in countries outside the U.S., or you can use the AC adapter/charger anywhere 100- to 240-voltage AC power is available. You might need an optional plug adapter. This adapter is available by special order from the local Radio Shack store (CMC No. JC-0127). USING THE BATTERY You can power the camcorder using the supplied battery. You must charge the battery before you use it. Charging the Battery CAUTIONS: Use only the supplied AC adapter/charger to charge the battery. Use of any other adapter/charger could damage the battery. Also, do not use the supplied adapter/charger to charge any battery except CS-6012 (6V, 1000 mAh). Do not place the battery pack in or near fire. This camcorder uses a rechargeable nickel-cadmium battery. At the end of the battery's useful life, it must be recycled or disposed of properly. Contact the local, county, or state hazardous waste management authorities for information on recycling or disposal programs in your area. Some options that might be available are: municipal curbside collection, drop- off boxes at retailers, recycling collection centers, and mail-back programs. Follow these steps to charge the battery. 1. Align the battery's alignment mark with the adapter/charger's alignment mark. 2. Gently press the battery against the adapter/charger and slide the battery to the right until it clicks into place. 3. Plug the AC adapter/charger's power cord into a standard AC outlet. The power indicator lights. The adapter/charger's charge indicator lights and charging begins. When the battery is fully charged, the charge indicator goes off. 4. When charging is complete, remove the battery from the adapter/charger by sliding the battery to the left; then disconnect the adapter/charger from the wall outlet. NOTE: It takes about 1 hour to fully charge the battery. (The charging time depends on the ambient temperature and the battery's condition.) Battery Pack Refreshment Refresh the battery once for every ten times you recharge it. Otherwise, the battery loses its ability to fully recharge. To refresh the battery, install the battery pack on the adapter/charger and connect the adapter/charger to an AC outlet. Then press REFRESH on the adapter/charger. The charge indicator blinks while the battery is being refreshed. When refreshing is complete, charging starts automatically and the indicator lights steadily. CAUTION: If the charge indicator flashes rapidly, remove the battery immediately. Then re-install the battery and try again. If the indicator still flashes rapidly, the battery life might have been exhausted. Use another battery. NOTE: Refresh time depends on the amount of charge remaining in the battery. A fully charged battery takes about 3 1/2 hours to refresh. Battery Status Indicator When the battery's power is low, the low battery indicator flashes in the viewfinder. Recharge the battery or power the camcorder from the AC adapter. Use the battery's charge indicator as a reminder of whether or not the battery has been charged. Set the indicator so the red dot shows when the battery is discharged. Set it so the red dot does not show after you charge the battery. Attaching the Battery to the Camcorder 1. Align the battery's alignment mark with the camcorder's alignment mark. 2. Gently press the battery against the camcorder, and slide the battery in the direction of the arrow until the battery clicks into place. NOTE: Be sure the battery fits exactly. Installing the battery improperly can damage the battery holder or the camcorder. Removing the Battery from the Camcorder NOTE: Always stop the tape and turn off the camcorder before you remove the battery. The tape remains wound around the video head during recording or playback. You might damage the tape if you remove the battery during recording or playback. 1. Turn off the camcorder. 2. Slide and hold down BATT, and slide the battery off the camcorder. Battery Usage Hints Recording with many starts and stops, frequent zooming, and recording in low temperatures might shorten actual recording times. Be sure to turn off the power when not recording. We recommend that you purchase an extra battery so you can charge one while using another. Do not use an insufficiently charged or discharged battery. Use of such a battery might cause the power to automatically stop during camcorder operation, possibly damaging the tape, the battery, and the camcorder. The camcorder consumes a small amount of battery power even when the camcorder's power is off. If you are not going to use the camcorder for a while, remove the battery before storing it. Extending Battery Life Do not charge the battery before the low battery indicator appears in the viewfinder. If you recharge a battery pack before it has been discharged, it causes deterioration of the battery's capacity. Recharge a battery pack that has been stored for an extended time immediately before use. Batteries stored for long periods lose some power, resulting in decreased operating time. Store the battery in a dry, cool place. WARNINGS: During use and while recharging, the battery feels warm. This is normal and does not indicate a malfunction. If the battery pack's terminals get dirty, wipe them gently with a soft dry cloth or tissue paper. The battery's optimum operating temperature range is 32 degrees F to 104 degrees F (0 degrees C to 40 degrees C). Below this temperature range, operating time decreases. Do not dispose of the battery in a fire because it can explode. Do not open or mutilate the battery. Be careful not to short the battery pack terminals with conducting materials, such as rings, bracelets, and keys. The battery or conductor might overheat and burn. Do not get the battery pack wet. Do not drop the battery pack or subject it to sudden shocks. Use a replacement battery of only the required type (CMC No. 16-2303, 6V 3500 mAh rechargeable battery) available through the local Radio Shack store. At the end of the battery's useful life, it must be recycled or disposed of properly. Contact the local, county, or state hazardous waste management authorities for information on recycling or disposal program in your area. Some options that might be available are: municipal curbside collection, drop-off boxes at retailers, recycling collection centers, and mail-back programs. (TE/all-05/05/95)
