MODEL 100 4-Head (160-0618) Operation Faxback Doc. # 15691 VHS Stereo Hi-Fi VCR 16-618 PLAYING A PRE-RECORDED TAPE Follow these steps to play a pre-recorded tape. 1. Turn on the TV. 2. Set the TV tuner to the same channel as the VCR's OUTPUT CHANNEL switch - either 3 or 4. See "Setting the Channel Switch." If you use a TV monitor that is connected to the VCR's AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks, set the monitor to the video mode. See "Connecting a TV Monitor." 3. Position the cassette with the main label facing up and the spine label facing out from the VCR. Then, insert the cassette into the cassette compartment by gently pushing on the center of the cassette's spine until the VCR completely draws in the cassette. The VCR automatically turns on and the tape indicator (<<||>>) or (>) lights. If the erase protection tab has been removed from the cassette, playback automatically begins. See "Erase Protection Tab." CAUTION: Never insert anything except a VHS video cassette into the cassette compartment. You might damage the VCR's internal mechanisms. 4. If playback does not automatically begin, press PLAY. 5. Press STOP to stop playback before the end of the tape. Then, press EJECT on the VCR to eject the cassette. If the tape reaches the end before you press STOP, the VCR automatically stops the tape, completely rewinds it, and ejects the cassette after the tape rewinds. NOTES: You can press EJECT to eject a cassette when the VCR is off. The VCR's power temporarily turns on while the cassette ejects. If the tape is recorded in stereo hi-fi, select the audio output mode by pressing OUTPUT SELECT on the remote control. See "Controlling VCR Input and Outputs." Erase-Protection Tab Video cassette have an erase-protection tab to prevent accidental erasure of a tape. If the erase-protection tab is removed, the VCR cannot record on the tape. The cassette automatically ejects if you try to record on the tape. If you want to record on a video cassette that does not have the tab, put a piece of heavy plastic tape over the erase-protection tab hole. HOW THE VCR'S TUNER WORKS The VCR's 179-channel PLL tuner is active when you turn on the VCR and set it to the tuner mode. The tuner has two functions. It lets you select what the VCR records. It lets you select the VCR's output when VCR appears on the VCR's display (when the VCR is neither playing nor recording a tape). The tuner has no effect on recording or VCR output when you set the VCR to the A/V mode or when the power is off. See "Selecting the input Mode." SETTING THE OUTPUT CHANNEL SWITCH When VCR appears on the VCR's display, the VCR sends the selected video source signal from the VCR's OUT TO TV terminal to the TV on the channel you select using the VCR's OUTPUT CHANNEL switch (on the back of the VCR). These signals are also present at the VCR's AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks. If Channel 3 or 4 is an active channel in your area, set the OUTPUT CHANNEL switch to the other position. The OUTPUT CHANNEL switch has no effect when the VCR is off or when VCR does not appear on the display. SELECTING THE TUNER BAND Depending on the setting of TV MODE, the tuner can receive VHF/UHF channels (2-69) or cable channels (1-125) from one of three different types of cable systems - CATV (Standard), HRC, or IRC. Press TV MODE to select VHF/UHF channels or cable channels. Each time you press TV MODE the TV mode changes from broadcast TV to standard CATV, to HRC CATV, to IRC CATV then back to broadcast TV. The display shows CH only for broadcast TV , CATV and CH for standard CATV and HR for three seconds then CATV and CH for HRC, and CATV and IR for three seconds then CATV and CH for IRC. If you do not know which type of cable system you have, call your cable company or select the setting that gives the best reception. PROGRAMMING THE TUNER MEMORY You can program the tuner's memory so that you press CH DOWN or UP, the VCR's tuner scans only the active channels in your area. 1. Be sure the display shows the tuner band you desire. Press AUTO CH PROG on the VCR. The tuner scans through the channels in the band you select and memorizes all the active channels in your area. After scanning all the channels, the VCR automatically exits the programming mode. 2. Press CH DOWN or UP to check the memory's contents. If the tuner stores a channel that you do not want, tune to that channel and press ADD/ERASE. ER appears on the VCR's display for about 3 seconds to show that the unwanted channel is erased from the tuner's memory. 3. If you want to program a weak channel that automatic programming missed, enter the desired channel number using the remote control's number buttons. Then, press ADD/ERASE. Ad appears on the VCR's display for about 3 seconds to show that the channel is added to the memory. You can directly select channels that are not in the tuner's memory using the remote control's number buttons. NOTES: Be sure to set the tuner band before you program the tuner's memory. You can enter channels from only one tuner band. See "Selecting the Tuner Band." If the AC cord is unplugged or a power failure occurs for more than a few seconds, the tuner might lose the information in memory. CHANNEL SELECTION There are two methods of channel selection - manual and direct. Before you select a channel, select the desired band. To manually select a channel, press CH DOWN or UP. The tuner automatically advances to the next programmed channel in the direction of the button's arrow. If you press CH UP when the tuner is at the highest programmed channel or CH DOWN when the tuner is at the lowest programmed channel, the VCR enters the A/V mode and the display shows AV. Pressing either button again tunes to the highest or lowest programmed channel in the band. To directly select a channel, press the remote control's number buttons for the desired channel. You must precede one-digit channel numbers with 0 - 01, 02, 03, and so on. For three-digit channel numbers, press 100. Then, enter the second and third digits in the channel number. CABLE CHANNEL DESIGNATIONS The VCR can receive up to 111 cable channels. The VCR displays the channels as 1-125. Channels 2-13 are the same for VHF and cable TV, and cable companies usually number them as they appear on the display. However, cable companies often designate other cable channels with letters or letter-number combinations. The following chart shows common cable channel designations. Alternate Channel VCR Tuner Alternate Channel VCR Tuner Designations Display Designations Display Mid Band Channels Hyper Band Channels A 14 W + 1 37 B 15 W + 2 38 C 16 W + 3 39 D 17 W + 4 40 E 18 W + 5 41 F 19 ' ' G 20 through through H 21 ' ' I 22 W + 58 94 W + 59 100 ' ' Super Band Channels through through J 23 ' ' K 24 W + 84 125 L 25 M 26 N 27 VHF Low Band Channels O 28 P 29 4A or A8 01 Q 30 5A or A7 05 R 31 6A or A6 06 S 32 T 33 Mid Low Band Channels U 34 A-3 97 V 35 A-2 98 W 36 A-1 99 For more information, contact your cable company. You still might have to experiment to determine the proper cable channel designations for your cable system. NORMAL TV VIEWING Follow these steps for normal TV viewing. 1. Turn on the TV. 2. Turn off the VCR, or press TV/VCR on the remote control so that VCR does not appear on the VCR's display. The antennas or cable signals pass through the VCR unaffected, as if the antenna or cable were connected directly to the TV. If you use a TV monitor, be sure to set it to the TV mode. 3. Select the desired channel, using the TV tuner. CONTROLLING VCR INPUTS & OUTPUTS The OUTPUT CHANNEL switch works together with TV/VCR, SAP ON OFF, and OUTPUT SELECT to control the input signals of your VCR. This is important when you use the VCR's tuner to select the program you want to watch or when you play back a tape. SELECTING THE INPUT MODE There are two combinations of input signals to record and send to the VIDEO/AUDIO OUT jacks. The input selection affects the OUT TO TV signals only when you press TV/VCR so that VCR appears on the VCR's display. The VCR displays the selections as follows: Input Video Audio Mode Display Source Source Tuner Channel Tuner Tuner Number and Channel Channel Selected Band Audio/ AV Video Audio Video Input Input To select an external video/audio device as the input source (connected to the VCR's VIDEO/AUDIO IN jacks), use CH DOWN or UP to tune one position higher than the highest programmed channel or one position lower than lowest programmed channel. Or, enter 00 using the remote control's number buttons. AV appears on the channel display. USING THE OUTPUT SELECT BUTTON To select the sound you hear during recording or playback, press OUTPUT SELECT on the remote control. This button is especially useful when you record the main signal on the left channel and a different SAP signal on the right channel. The indicators light as follows: OUTPUT SELECT Setting Indicator Stereo L and R On Left L On Right R On Normal Off Standard (non-hi-fi) VCRs record audio signals on a separate track from the video signals. Hi-fi VCRs record audio signals on the same track as video signals. To make the recordings compatible with standard VCRs, the Model 100 also records audio signals on the regular audio track. When you use the normal setting of OUTPUT SELECT, you listen to the playback from the regular audio track. Also, if you play a tape recorded on a standard VCR, the Model 100 plays the regular audio track, regardless of OUTPUT SELECT setting. The chart on the following page shows the VHF and output results from the following OUTPUT SELECT settings: OUTPUT SELECT VHF Output Audio Output Setting Stereo Left and Right Left channel from channels continued L output, right (mono) from R Left Left channel only Left channel from L and R output Right Right channel only Right channel from L and R outputs Normal Regular audio track Regular audio track from L and R outputs NOTE: OUTPUT SELECT has no effect on recording. If you play a tape recorded on a non-hi-fi VCR, L and R does not appear and the sound does not change, even if you press OUTPUT SELECT. STEREO AND SAP BROADCASTS The MTS (multi-channel television sound) decoder built into your VCR's tuner automatically shows when the VCR receives stereo and/or SAP (special audio program) signals. STEREO appears on the display when the VCR receives a stereo signal. SAP appears on the display when the VCR receives a SAP signal with a mono main signal. STEREO and SAP appear on the display when the VCR receives a SAP signal with a stereo main signal. USING THE SAP ON/OFF BUTTON Use the VCR's SAP ON/OFF switch to select the audio signal you want to record or listen to when you set the VCR to the tuner mode and receive MTS stereo signals. The SAP ON/OFF switch has no effect on A/V or mono broadcast signals. The following chart shows what is recorded on the left and right channels for on and off settings of the SAP ON/OFF switch. Tuner Selected Switch Type of Audio Regular Setting Broadcast L Ch R Ch.
