MODEL 100 4-Head (160-0618) Recording Faxback Doc. # 15692 VHS Stereo Hi-Fi VCR There are four ways to record using your VCR - immediate recording, quick timer recording, automatic timer recording, and dubbing. Your VCR automatically adjusts the audio recording level. The video cassette you use for recording must have the erase-protection tab in place. If the tab is removed, the cassette automatically ejects if you try to record on it. (See "Erase-Protection Tab.") TAPE SELECTION The Quality of tape you use greatly affects record/playback quality and the life of the VCR. Use only video cassettes that display the official VHS logo. High-grade tape has a better oxide coating that helps prevent dirty video heads. This type of tape gives the best results. Although T-160 video cassettes offer the longest recording time, they contain thinner tape that is more likely to jam. We suggest you use T-120, or shorter length tape. The following chart shows the maximum recording times for different-length tapes at the three recording speeds. Cassette Recording T-60 T-120 T-160 SP 1 hour 2 hours 2 2/3 hours (60 minutes) (120 minutes) (160 minutes) LP 2 hours 4 hours 5 1/3 hours (120 minutes) (240 minutes) (320 minutes) EP 3 hours 6 hours 8 hours (180 minutes) 360 minutes) (480 minutes) Copyright Information Unauthorized recording or use of broadcast television programming, video tape, film, or other copyrighted material may violate applicable copy-right laws. If you use a TV monitor, be sure to set it to the TV mode. 3. Set the TV tuner to the channel you want to watch. 4. Press STOP to stop recording. AUDIO-ONLY RECORDING Because of the superior quality of VHS hi-fi audio recordings, you might want to use your VCR as an audio-only recorder. To do so, connect the audio outputs of the desired audio source (a tape deck, for example) to the VCR's AUDIO IN jacks. You can also make live recordings by connecting a preamplifier or mixer to the VCR's AUDIO IN jacks. However, do not directly connect a microphone to the VCR. NOTE: You must disconnect the VCR's VIDEO IN jack before you make an audio-only recording. QUICK TIMER RECORDING The VCR is capable of two types of quick timer recording (QTR) - immediately and delayed. Immediate QTR starts recording immediately and stops at the time you select. Delayed QTR starts recording at the time you select within the following 24 hours. Then, as with immediate QTR, recording stops at the time you select. NOTE: You cannot use immediate QTR if the VCR is programmed for automatic timer recording. Immediate QTR 1. Insert a blank VHS video cassette, or one you want to record over, into the VCR. The VCR automatically turns on. If a cassette is already in the VCR, press POWER to turn on the VCR. 2. Turn on the TV, and set it to the same channel as the VCR's OUTPUT CHANNEL switch. If you have a TV/monitor, set it to the video mode. 3. Press TV/VCR on the remote control so that VCR appears on the display. 4. If you want to record an MTS broadcast, set SAP ON/OFF as desired. See "Using the SAP On/Off Button." 5. Press SP/LP/EP to display the desired recording speed. 6. Select the channel you want to record, or prepare the A/V source you want to record. 7. Press QTR/REC on the remote control (or RECORD on the VCR) twice. The QTR indicator lights. Then, press QTR/REC or RECORD repeatedly until the display shows the approximate end time. To ensure that you record all of the desired program, set the end time a little later than the end of the program. Delayed QTR 1. Perform Steps 1-6 in "Immediate QTR." 2. Press START TIME on the remote control repeatedly to display the approximate start time. The QTR indicator lights. The timer display advances in 10-minute increments. Then, press CH DOWN/UP or MIN- -/+ to set the exact start time. 3. Press QTR on the remote control (or RECORD on the VCR) repeatedly to set the approximate end time. The timer display advances in 10-minute increments. Then, press CH DOWN/UP or MIN - -/+ to set the exact end time. To ensure that you record all of the desired program, set the end time a little later than the end of program. Recording automatically starts at the set time. When recording ends, the VCR automatically turns off. To stop recording before the set time, press STOP. The TV screen's program display automatically turns off a few seconds after you set the delayed QTR. You can manually operate the VCR in the delayed QTR standby mode. The QTR indicator flashes to show you that delayed QTR is programmed. QTR Hints QTR cannot function if a cassette is not inserted, if the erase- protection tab is removed, or if an automatic timer recording is in progress. You can program QTR only in the stop or recording mode. You cannot set QTR while a tape is playing back. To cancel QTR during the delayed QTR standby time, turn on the VCR and press START TIME or QTR and press CANCEL on the remote control. To cancel QTR in progress, press STOP. You can change the QTR start/end time by pressing START TIME/QTR during the QTR standby time. You can check automatic program timer settings during QTR. See "Automatic Timer Recording." If the dew protection system stops the VCR's operation, QTR is cancelled. AUTOMATIC TIMER RECORDING Automatic timer recording lets you set the VCR to start and end recording while you are away. Your VCR has eight program timers that let you record on a specific day within a 1-year period (NORMAL), the same day every week (WEEKLY), or once a day, the same time every day (DAILY). You can set each program timer to record on a different channel and at a different speed. Automatic timer recording consists of two steps: setting the program timer and making the automatic timer recording. Setting the Program Timers You must use the remote control to set the program timers. Be sure you correctly set the clock before you use automatic timer recording. In the following example, Timer No 1 is set to record Channel 7 from 9:05 p.m. to 10:35 p.m. on Monday, August 10th, 1992 at the SP speed. 1. Insert a blank cassette, or one that you want to record over, into the VCR. The VCR turns on. If the cassette's erase-protection tab is removed, place a piece of plastic tape over the hole to allow recording on the tape. 2. Turn on the TV and set it to the same channel as the VCR's OUTPUT CHANNEL switch. Or, if you have a TV/monitor, set the monitor to the video mode. 3. Press TV/VCR so that VCR appears on the display. 4. Press PROG on the remote control. The program timer appears on the TV screen. 5. Press 1 to select the timer setting. 6. (Press 1 to set NORMAL, for example.) 8. Use the number buttons to set the desired date. (Press 0, 8, 1, and 0 to set August 10, for example ) Precede single-digit entries with 0. NOTE: If you accidentally set the timer to record on a date that is before the VCR's clock date, the VCR considers the set time, date, and day of the week to be for next year. 9. Use the number buttons to set the start time. (Press 0, 9, and 5 to set 9:05, for example.) Precede single-digits entries with 0. 10. Press 1 to set an a.m. hour or press 2 to set a p.m. hour. (Press 2 to select PM, for example.) 11. Press the number buttons to set the end time. (Press 1, 0, 3, and 5 to set 10:35, for example.) 12. Press the number buttons to select the channel number. (Press 0 and 7 to select 7 for example.) Press 0 twice if you want to set an A/V recording. 13. Press number buttons 1-3 to select the tape speed (SP, LP, or EP). (Press 1 to select SP, for example.) 14. Double-check all the set information. If it is correct, press PROG If something is not correct, press CH DOWN/UP or CURSOR +/- to move the cursor to the wrong entry, enter the correct information, and press PROG. The TV screen displays the settings of all the timer programs that have been set. 15. Press PROG again to return to the normal display. NOTE: If you want to exit the programming mode without storing the timer settings, press CANCEL. Making an Automatic Timer Recording After you set the automatic program timer(s), follow the steps below to make the recording(s). 1. Be sure a blank video cassette, or one you want to record over, is in the cassette compartment. 2. If you record an MTS broadcast, set the SAP ON/OFF on the VCR as desired. 3. Press POWER to turn off the VCR. TIMER appears on the display. This shows the VCR is in the timer standby mode. When a timer recording begins, the record indicator appears. You can turn on and operate the VCR manually prior to the set times, but the VCR makes the automatic timer recording(s) only if the power is off at the set start time(s). Automatic Timer Recording Hints If a power failure occurs or the VCR is unplugged for more than a few seconds, the VCR loses the clock setting and all timer settings. If the dew protection system stops operation during an automatic timer recording, the recording is cancelled. If two timer programs overlap, the one that starts later has priority. The VCR begins recording the second program at the start time you set, before the first program ends. If you set the timer and turn off the VCR without loading a cassette, TIMER flashes. If you insert a cassette with its erase-protection tab removed and set the VCR's timer, the cassette ejects and TIMER flashes on the display. Monitoring an Automatic Timer Recording To monitor an automatic timer recording, turn on the TV and set it to the same channel as the VCR's OUTPUT CHANNEL switch. Press TV/VCR so that VCR appears on the display. Or, if you have a TV/monitor, set it to the video mode. Checking Program Timers Follow these steps to check a program timer. 1. Press PROG to exit the program clear mode. Be sure to turn off the VCR to enter the timer standby mode if you still have timer program(s). DUBBING The process of recording from one VCR (playback VCR) to another (recording VCR) is called dubbing. You can use a camcorder, satellite receiver, or other device with A/V outputs in place of the playback VCR. Always use video-quality shielded cables with phono connectors. Do not use standard audio patch cords. Connections for Dubbing Connect the video and audio outputs of the playback VCR to the correspond- ing VIDEO and AUDIO IN jacks on the Model 100. If the playback VCR is mono, use a Y-adapter (available at your local Radio Shack store) to connect the playback VCR's audio output to both AUDIO IN jacks on the Model 100. Dubbing a Video Cassette Tape To dub a video cassette, do the following: 1. Insert a pre-recorded video cassette into the playback VCR. 2. Insert a blank video cassette, or one you want to record over, into the Model 100's cassette compartment. 3.
