Model 19 (160-0411) Operation Faxback Doc. # 16545 PLAYING A TAPE Follow these steps to play a tape. 1. Position the cassette with the main label facing up and the spine label facing out. Then, insert the cassette into the cassette compartment by gently pushing on the center of the cassette's spine until the Model 19 completely draws in the cassette. The TV/VCP turns on automatically. If the erase-protection tab has been removed from the cassette, playback begins automatically. CAUTION: Never insert anything except a VHS video cassette into the cassette compartment. Doing so could damage the Model 19's internal mechanisms. 2. If playback does not begin automatically, press PLAY. 3. Press VOLUME. Down Arrow or Up Arrow for the desired volume. NOTE: To adjust the tint, contrast, brightness, or color, see "Picture Adjustments." 4. Press STOP/EJECT (or STOP on the remote control) to stop playback before the end of the tape. Then, press STOP/EJECT again (or EJECT on the remote control) to eject the tape. If the tape reaches the end before you press STOP/EJECT, the Model 19 automatically stops the tape and completely rewinds it. Then the Model 19 ejects the cassette and turns off. NOTE: Even if the Model 19 is off, you can press STOP/EJECT to eject a cassette. The power temporarily turns on while the cassette ejects. Storing Your Video Cassettes Eject and store the cassette after you play it. This helps protect the video cassette and the Model 19's internal mechanisms from dust. Place your video cassettes in their protective boxes and store them in a cool, dry, dust-free area. Store the cassettes on end, not on their sides. This prevents improper setting of the tape spool. NOTE: Tape can become wound too tightly around the cassette's spools after you play a tape several times. This can cause the cassette to improperly load and automatically eject when you insert it. Most video cassettes have a brake-release plunger on the bottom center of the cassette. Use the tip of a pen or pencil to press the plunger. This loosens the tape. PROGRAMMING THE TUNER MEMORY Follow these steps to store TV channels in the tuner's memory. This makes scanning the channels more convenient, because the TV scans only the programmed channels. NOTE: To program cable channels into memory, connect to the cable system before completing the following steps. See "Connecting to a Cable System." 1. Press POWER to turn on the Model 19. 2. Press MENU. The menu display appears on the screen. 3. Select 3 (CHANNEL PRESET) with the remote control's number buttons or CHANNEL/SET TRACKING Down Arrow or Up Arrow. 4. Press SELECT to select the desired band, TV or CATV. If you directly connect a cable from the cable company, select CATV. If you connect the output of a cable box or you watch VHF/UHF channels directly, select TV. 5. Press CHANNEL/SET TRACKING Down Arrow or Up Arrow once. The Model 19 automatically stores active channels. Then it tunes to the stored channel with the lowest channel number. Repeat Steps 2 through 5 to store channels in the other band (TV or CATV). NOTES: When you use AC power, the memory saves stored channels even when you turn off the Model 19. If you unplug the AC cord, or power fails for more than about 3 seconds, the tuner loses the information in memory. If you use vehicle battery power, you must reprogram the memory each time you turn on the Model 19. ADDING OR DELETING CHANNELS If desired, you can check the memory's contents and remove or add channels, as follows: 1. Press MENU and select 4 (CHANNEL ADD/CLEAR). 2. Press SELECT. Then enter the desired channel number using the remote control's number buttons or CHANNEL/SET TRACKING Up Arrow/Down Arrow. If the channel number is flashing, the channel is not stored in memory. If it stays lit, the channel is stored in memory. 3. Press ADD/CLEAR (STOP/EJECT on the front panel) to add the selected channel number in memory or to clear it from memory. 4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 to add or delete additional channels. 5. Press MENU to exit the programming mode. CHANNEL SELECTION There are two methods of channel selection: scanning and direct. To scan for a channel, press CHANNEL/SET TRACKING Down Arrow or Up Arrow. The tuner automatically advances to the next memorized channel in the direction of the arrow on the button you press. If you press CHANNEL/SET TRACKING Up Arrow when the tuner is at the highest memorized channel, the Model 19 returns to the lowest memorized channel. If you press CHANNEL/SET TRACKING Down Arrow when the tuner is at the lowest memorized channel, the Model 19 returns to the highest memorized channel. To directly select a channel, press the remote control's number buttons for the desired channel. You must precede one-digit channel numbers with a 0-02, 03, 04, and so on. For three-digit channel numbers, press + 100. Then, enter the second and third digits in the channel number. With direct channel selection, you can choose any channel in the tuner's range, even if you have not programmed the channel, if there is no broadcast present, or if the channel is scrambled (the tuner does not unscramble the channel). VIEWING A TV PROGRAM Follow these steps for normal TV viewing. 1. Press POWER to turn on the Model 19. 2. Select the desired band. See "Programming the Tuner Memory." 3. Select the desired channel number. See "Channel Selection." 4. If you are using the indoor antenna, extend and rotate it to get the best reception. NOTE: To improve UHF reception, shorten the telescoping antenna. 5. Press VOLUME Down Arrow or Up Arrow for the desired volume. NOTE: To adjust the tint, contrast, brightness, or color, see "Picture Adjustments." ADDITIONAL FEATURES DEW-PROTECTION SYSTEM The dew-protection system protects against tape jams and tape head damage. When the dew-protection system senses excess humidity, d appears on the screen and the Model 19 will not play a tape. (You can still eject the tape and watch TV.) When the humidity level is acceptable, d disappears and you can use the VCP. PICTURE ADJUSTMENTS To adjust the picture's brightness, color, tint, sharpness, or contrast, press MENU and select 7 (PICTURE CONTROL.) Press SELECT until the control you want to adjust appears on the screen. Then press CHANNEL/SET TRACKING Down Arrow or Up Arrow to change the setting. After a few seconds, the display disappears and the menu display reappears. Press MENU to exit the menu display, or wait a few seconds for it to automatically disappear. FAST-FORWARD/REWIND While the VCP is stopped, press FAST-F or REWIND to rapidly wind the tape. Press STOP to stop the tape. VISUAL SEARCH During play, press down FAST-F or REWIND to view the tape as it winds. To resume normal play, release the button. AUTOMATIC REWIND SYSTEM When the tape reaches the end during playback or fast-forward, it automatically rewinds to the beginning and ejects. The Model 19 automatically turns off. FREEZE-FRAME During play, press PAUSE to freeze the picture. (The picture quality is slightly reduced.) Repeatedly press PAUSE to slowly advance the tape, or press PLAY to resume normal play. (After about 5 minutes, the Model 19 automatically goes from pause mode to stop mode.) DISPLAY SELECTION The appropriate display briefly appears each time you change the TV band or channel, select a VCP function, or adjust the picture or volume. You can also select the VCP display or the TV channel display at any time. Press SELECT until the desired display appears. The VCP function display shows the current tape status (such as PLAY, STOP), the tape's playing speed, and the counter. NOTE: You cannot select the play speed. The tape plays at its recorded speed. COUNTER MEMORY To determine the play time from a selected point or to easily return to a selected point on the tape, do the following. 1. Fast-forward or rewind to the selected point. 2. Press SELECT until the counter appears on the display. 3. Press ADD/CLEAR RESET to reset the counter to 0000. 4. To return to the selected point, press COUNTER MEMORY until MEMORY appears on the screen. When you fast-forward or rewind the tape while MEMORY appears, the tape automatically stops at the selected point (0000). You can then fast-forward or rewind past that point. If you do not want the tape to stop at the selected point, press COUNTER MEMORY until MEMORY Disappears. To activate the counter memory function without the remote control, follow these steps. 1. Press MENU. 2. Press VOLUME Down Arrow. The counter resets to 0000. 3. Press CHANNEL/SET TRACKING Down Arrow. Then press VOLUME Down Arrow- /SELECT so the indicator is next to ON. 4. Press MENU. MUTE To temporarily turn off the Model 19's sound (to answer the phone, for example), press MUTE. Press MUTE again or adjust VOLUME to restore the sound. AUTOMATIC REPEAT PLAYBACK This function enables you to automatically repeat playback of a tape, from the beginning to the end. 1. Press MENU. 2. Select 6 (REPEAT PLAY ON/OFF) with the number buttons or CHANNEL/SET TRACKING Down Arrow or Up Arrow. 3. Press SELECT to select ON. Repeat playback automatically starts. Once you select the repeat play mode, it stays in effect even after you turn off the Model 19. To exit the repeat play mode, select OFF instead of ON for normal play. SETTING THE SLEEP TIMER The sleep timer lets you set the Model 19 to play for a specific time period, and then automatically turn off. Press SLEEP on the remote control. SLEEP 30 MIN appears on the screen. Press SLEEP repeatedly until the screen shows the time period you want the Model 19 to play. You can set the time in 30-minute increments, up to 120 minutes. To set the sleep timer without using the remote control, do the following: 1. Press MENU. 2. Press CHANNEL/SET TRACKING Down Arrow four times to select 5 (SLEEP). 3. Press VOLUME Down Arrow/SELECT to display the desired sleep time. To check the remaining time, press MENU. TRACKING CONTROL When playing pre-recorded tapes, noise lines (black and white streaks) might appear on the playback picture. If this occurs, adjust the tracking by pressing CHANNEL Down Arrow and Up Arrow until the streaks disappear. To select the center position, press both CHANNEL Down Arrow and Up Arrow buttons at the same time. (You cannot perform this function using the remote control.) EARPHONE CONNECTION To view a tape or TV program without disturbing others, plug an earphone (not supplied) into the EARPHONE jack. This mutes the speaker. OPTIONAL CONNECTIONS USING VEHICLE BATTERY POWER To power the Model 19 from your vehicle's battery, connect the supplied DC power cord as follows: Plug the supplied DC power cord's small plug into the Model 19's DC 12V jack. Then plug the other end into the vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket. CAUTIONS: The vehicle must have a 12-volt, negative-ground electrical system. Use only the supplied DC power cord. Be sure the cigarette-lighter socket is free of ashes and other debris. Always plug the DC power cord into the Model 19 before you plug it into the cigarette-lighter socket. Always unplug it from the cigarette-lighter socket before you unplug it from the Model 19. Do not leave the Model 19 connected to DC power when you are not using your vehicle. If you use the Model 19 with the vehicle's engine turned off, protect the vehicle's battery from completely discharging by recharging the battery after every 4 hours of use. Unplug the DC power cord as soon as you finish using the Model 19. CONNECTING AN OUTDOOR ANTENNA Connect the antenna as follows: If you are using 75-ohm coaxial cable, connect the antenna cable directly to the external antenna jack. If you have a combination VHF/UHF antenna and your antenna wire is 300-ohm, use an optional adapter (Cat. No. 15-1253) to make the connection. If you have separate VHF and UHF antennas, connect the separate antenna cables to a signal combiner (available at your local Radio Shack store). Then connect the combiner's output to the Model 19. Refer to your antenna's installation instructions for additional information. CONNECTING TO A CABLE SYSTEM Note to CATV System Installer: This reminder is provided to call the CATV system installer's attention to Article 820-40 of the National Electrical Code that provides guidelines for proper grounding and, in particular, specifies that the cable ground shall be connected to the grounding system of the building, as close to the point of cable entry as practical. To receive cable channels, connect to your local cable system as follows: NOTE: The cable service's channel designations might not match the channel numbers that appear on the screen. If you are not receiving scrambled channels, you can connect the cable directly to the Model 19's ANT IN jack. WARNING: Some states have laws restricting direct connections to cable wires (connections that do not go through the cable box). Check the laws in your area before making any connections. If you are receiving scrambled channels, you must connect the cable to the cable converter box, then connect the cable converter box to the Model 19. Set the Model 19 to the cable box's output channel (3 or 4) and use the cable box to select the channel. (br/all-08/16/95)
