TC-1003 20" Stereo TV/Monitor (160-0253A) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 16991 CHOOSING A LOCATION Choose an appropriate location for your TV/monitor: Be sure air flows freely on all sides of the TV. Be sure the power cord is not in the way of normal traffic. NOTE: Do not plug in the power cord until you make all connections. CONNECTING ANTENNAS The supplied indoor antennas can be used with your TV/monitor, but for best reception, use a high-quality outdoor antenna. Your local Radio Shack store offers a wide selection of high-quality outdoor TV antennas. Ask the salesperson the size and type best for your area. CONNECTING INDOOR ANTENNAS The supplied antennas provide adequate reception in many areas. 1. Insert the post of the VHF dipole antenna (rabbit ear) into the socket on top of the TV/monitor. Then, snap the UHF antenna (loop) onto one element of the VHF antenna. 2. Connect the VHF antenna's leads to the 300-to-75 ohm adapter's terminals. 3. Push the 300-to-75 ohm adapter onto the VHF/UHF combiner's VHF terminals. 4. Connect the UHF antenna's leads to the VHF/UHF's combiner's UHF terminals. 5. Push the combiner onto the TV's VHF/UHF antenna terminal. 6. Extend the VHF elements fully. Then, adjust both elements for the best reception. 7. Turn the UHF antenna to improve reception. CONNECTING OUTDOOR ANTENNAS For best reception, use a high-quality outdoor antenna. Your local Radio Shack store offers a wide selection of high-quality outdoor TV antennas. Ask the salesperson what size and type is best for your area. NOTES: If you are using a combination VHF/UHF antenna, connect the antenna cable directly to the TV's VHF/UHF input. Use the 300-to-75 ohm transformer, if necessary. If you have separate VHF and UHF antennas, connect the separate antenna cables to the supplied combiner. Then, connect the separate antenna cables to the TV's VHF/UHF input. For best reception of MTS broadcasts, you might need to upgrade your antenna or replace the lead-in wire. Consult your antenna's installation instructions for more information. CABLE SYSTEM INFORMATION AND CONNECTIONS If you use the built-in -cable- ready tuner and some channels tune poorly, you might improve reception by setting the CATV switch to HRC or IRC, rather than STD. This switch matches your tuner to different types of cable systems. Set the switch to the position that gives the best reception. Trapped Cable Systems If you are using the TV/monitor with a trapped cable system or if you are not subscribing to available scrambled channels: 1. Connect the cable wire directly to the TV/monitor's VHF/UHF terminal. 2. Set the TV/CATV switch to CATV. Then, set the cable system selector switch to the appropriate position (STD, HRC, IRC). 3. Select the desired channel. NOTES: If you have a VCR, the connections can vary. See your VCR's owner's manual for more information. MTS audio signals used by many broadcasts channels are not always passed through cable systems. You can use a high-isolation A/B switch to select between antenna and cable input for your TV. Note to CATV System Installer: This reminder is provided to call CATV system installer's attention to article 820-22 of the National Electrical Code that provides guidelines for proper grounding and, in particular, specifies that the cable ground shall be connected to the grounding system of the building, as close to the point of cable entry as possible. Scrambled Cable Systems If you are subscribing to scrambled channels and/or your cable systems in interactive (digital communication between the cable service and your cable box), use the connections shown to receive all channels while maintaining much of the TV/monitor's remote control channel selection capability. NOTES: When you want to watch the non-scrambled cable channels, set the A/B switch so that the signals do not pass through the cable box. Use the TV's tuner to select the desired channel. When you want to watch scrambled channels, set the A/B switch to receive signals that pass through the cable box. set the TV/monitor to the output channel of the cable box (3 or 4), and use the cable box to select the desired channel. If your cable system is the standard (STD) type, you can leave the TV/CATV switch set to CATV when you are watching the output from the cable box. Standard cable channel 3 is the same as broadcast channel 3. VCR connections vary. See your VCR's owner's manual for assistance. MTS audio signals used by local broadcast channels are not always passed through by the cable service. You can use a high-isolation A/B/C switch to add a direct antenna input to the above connections. For more information, contact your local cable service. MONITOR CONNECTIONS To use your TV/monitor in the VIDEO mode, connect your VCR's (or other video component's) audio and video output jacks to the TV/monitor's AUDIO IN and VIDEO IN jacks. Use video- quality cables with RCA-type connectors. You can use the TV/monitor's AUDIO OUT and VIDEO OUT jacks to record the channel you select with the tuner. Any channel you can tune with the TV/monitor can be used, even if you cannot tune the channel with your VCR. NOTES: Do not connect an antenna or cable TV signal to the AUDIO/VIDEO jacks, When using separate audio/video signals, press (TV/VCR) until VIDEO displays on the screen. If your VCR or other input source is mono, make connection to the left audio input jack. The monaural signals are fed to both speakers. DIRECT PROCESSING OF ANTENNA/CABLE CHANNELS When using the separate audio and video signals, you can benefit from the A/V processors available at your local Radio Shack store. These devices can greatly improve the quality of your viewing and listening, and some devices also provide special effects for playback and video tape editing. Regardless of the setting of (TV/VCR), the channel you select with the TV/monitor's tuner is sent to the AUDIO/VIDEO jacks. Select the channel you want to process. Then press (TV/VCR) until video displays on screen. NOTE: Because most audio/video processors allow connection of two input sources and have a built in A/B switch, you can use this set-up for direct processing of broadcast/cable signals and also process the playback signals from your VCR or disc player without changing connections.
