Open the battery compartment by sliding the compartment door in the direction of the arrow. 2. Install 2 AA batteries, observing the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked inside the compartment. 3. Replace the compartment cover. Remote Control Features (POWER), (VOLUME), (CHANNEL), (PICTURE SELECT), (AUDIO MODE), and (TV/VCR) are on both the remote and the TV/monitor. See "Picture Adjustment" for more information. To use the remote control, follow these steps: 1. Install the batteries. 2. Point the remote toward the TV/monitor. Then, press the desired button. NOTE: If the remote control fails or is erratic, replace both batteries. The following remote control buttons control special remote-only functions: (DISPLAY) button - displays the current channel and current time on the TV screen. (VIDEO displays when the TV/monitor is in the video mode.) Pressing (DISPLAY) when the current channel and time (or VIDEO) are displayed returns to normal viewing. (SLEEP) button - lets you program the TV/monitor to automatically turn itself off after 10, 20,30,...90 minutes. (MUTE) button - temporarily mutes the TV/monitor's internal speakers or external speakers connected to the TV/monitor's EXT. SPEAKERS jacks. Press (MUTE) again, or press either of the VOLUME buttons to return to normal listening. (MUTE) does not affect the AUDIO OUT jacks. (CHANNEL RECALL) button - returns to the channel you selected immediately before the currently selected channel. Number Buttons - lets you directly select any channel in the currently selected tuner band (VHF/UHF or cable.) If you press only a single digit, the TV/monitor waits 5 seconds and switches to that channel. If you want to immediately select a one-digit channel number, enter a zero first (01, 02,03 and so on.) (SKIP/SEARCH) button - This button selects the mode of operation for the CHANNEL up or down buttons. When you select the skip mode, pressing a CHANNEL button selects the next channel stored in the tuner memory in the direction of the button's arrow. When you select the search mode, pressing a CHANNEL button causes the tuner to search for the next active channel in the direction of the button's arrow. (AUTO MEMORY) button - Press to preset to tuner memories automatically. (CH/TIMER) button - Press to memory in or out for clock, channel ON TIMER and OFF TIME, or erase memorized OFF TIME. (TIMER SELECT) button - Press to select the timer set function for clock, on time and off time. TV Operation (VHF/UHF or Cable TV signals) Regular Broadcasts To receive regular broadcasts, follow these steps: 1. Plug the power cord into an AC outlet. Note: The power cord has a polarized plug, one of the plug's blades is wider than the other. If you do not have polarized outlets, have one installed before using the TV/monitor. 2. Press (POWER) on the TV/monitor or remote to turn on the TV/monitor. 3. Press TV/VCR until a channel number displays. 4. Set the TV/CATV switch. Set the switch to TV for regular broadcast channels or cable channels coming from a separate cable box. Set the switch to CATV if you connected the cable wire directly to the TV/monitor without a cable box. NOTE: The TV/CATV button has no effect when the TV/monitor is in VIDEO mode. See "Monitor Operation." 5. If you set the TV/CATV switch to CATV, set the type of cable system you have (STD, HRC, IRC). If you do not know what type of cable system you have, contact your local cable company or choose the setting that results in the best overall performance. 6. Choose the desired channel by entering a two-digit channel number (02, for example) on the remote control's key pad, or pressing one of the (CHANNEL) buttons until the desired channel number displays. See "Programming the Tuner Memory." NOTE: If you pause for more than a few seconds, after entering the first digit, the TV/monitor assumes that you have entered a single-digit channel number and switches to that channel. 7. Adjust CONTRAST, BRIGHTNESS, COLOR, and TINT for the best picture. See "Picture Adjustments" for more information. 8. Use the VOLUME up and down arrow buttons and the BALANCE control to get the desired sound. Multi-Channel Television Sound Broadcasts If the STEREO and/or SAP (Special Audio Program) indicator lights when you select a channel, the TV/monitor is receiving an MTS signal. You must also consider the following: If only the STEREO indicator lights, you are receiving a stereo signal. Press (AUDIO MODE) until STEREO displays on-screen. If only the SAP indicator lights, you are receiving a SAP signal with a mono main signal To listen to the main signal, press (AUDIO MODE) until MONO displays on-screen. To listen to the SAP signal, press (AUDIO MODE) until SAP displays on screen. If both the STEREO and SAP indicators light, you are receiving a stereo main signal and a SAP signal. To listen to the stereo main signal, press (AUDIO MODE) until STEREO displays on-screen. To listen to the SAP signal, press (AUDIO MODE) until SAP displays on screen. PROGRAMMING THE TUNER'S MEMORY Programming the tuner's memory makes channel scanning quicker and more efficient. You scan only the programmed channels when you press CHANNEL up or down arrow. If you do not program the tuner's memory, the tuner scans all channels, stopping on each active one. You can access any channel, whether or not it is programmed in memory, by using the remote control's number buttons. NOTES: If you unplug the TV/monitor or have a failure more than 3 minutes, tuner preset, clock, on time, and sleep time will be lost. You have to reset all of the memories. All tuner programming is done using the remote control. STORING A CHANNEL IN MEMORY 1. Set the TV/CATV switch for the type of signals you receive. TV2, STD1, HRC1 or IRC1 displays. CAUTION: There is only one tuner memory. If you change the TV/CATV switch setting and reprogram the memory, previous memory information is erased. 2. If you want to store all the active channels in your area in the tuner memory, press (AUTO MEMORY). The display scans through the channels, and all active channels are automatically stored. 3. If you do not want to store all the active channels, use the remote control's number buttons to select a channel you want to program. If the channel number displays in green, it is already stored.) Then, press (CH/TIMER MEMORY). The channel display changes from red to green to indicate the channel is stored. 4. Repeat Step 3 to manually store additional channels in the tuner memory. See "Erasing a Channel from Memory." Erasing a Channel from Memory This procedure lets you erase channels from memory that you no longer want to scan. 1. Select the channel to erase by pressing CHANNEL up or down arrows, or the remote control's number buttons until the desired channel number displays. 2. Press (CH/TIMER MEMORY.) The channel number display changes from green to red. The channel has been erased from memory. 3. Repeat the above steps to remove additional channels from memory. Setting the Clock 1. Press (TIMER SELECT) repeatedly until CLOCK and a time display. CLOCK displays in green and the time displays in red. 2. Press (HOUR) repeatedly until the correct hour displays. Then, press (MINUTE) repeatedly until the correct time displays. 3. Press (CH/TIMER MEMORY) to start the clock. The time display changes to green. AUTOMATIC POWER ON You can program the TV/monitor to turn on at a certain time. NOTE: Before you program the timer-on setting, be sure the current time is set properly. See "Setting the Clock." 1. Press (TIMER SELECT) repeatedly until ON TIME and a time display. ON TIME displays in green and the time displays in red. 2. Press (HOUR) repeatedly until the on-time displays. Then, press (MINUTE) repeatedly until the correct on-time displays. 3. Press (CH/TIMER MEMORY) to store the on-time changes to green. The ON TIMER indicator lights when the on-timer function is activated. NOTE: The TV/monitor automatically turns on at the set time every day until you erase the on-timer memory. To deactivate the on time memory, follow these steps: 1. Press (TIMER SELECT) repeatedly until ON TIME and a time display. ON TIME and the time display in green. 2. Press (HOUR) or (MINUTE) once. The time display changes to red. The on-timer memory is erased. AUTOMATIC POWER OFF You can program the timer-off setting, be sure the current time is set properly. 1. Press (TIMER SELECT) repeatedly until OFF TIME and a time display. OFF TIME displays in green and the time displays in red. 2. Press (HOUR) repeatedly until the off-time hour displays. Then, press (MINUTE) repeatedly until the correct off-time displays. NOTE: Step (2) must be done while the OFF TIME displays on-screen. 3. Press (CH/TIMER MEMORY) to store the off-time setting. The time changes to green. ERASING THE OFF-TIME MEMORY The TV/monitor automatically turns off at the set time every day until you erase the off-time memory. To deactivate the off-time memory, follow these steps: 1. Press (TIMER SELECT) repeatedly until OFF TIME and a time display. The time displays in green. 2. Press (HOUR) or (MINUTE) once. The displayed time changes to red. The off-time memory is erased. USING HEADPHONES If you want to listen privately, plug low-impedance, stereo headphones with a 1/8-inch jack into the PHONES jack (inside the control compartment). When you plug in headphones the TV's internal (or external) speakers are automatically muted. The headphones do not affect the signal coming from the AUDIO OUT jacks. CAUTION: Do not listen at extremely high volume levels, especially when using headphones. Extended, high volume listening can lead to permanent hearing loss.
