Model 128 Moviecorder (160-0828) Special VCR Features Faxback Doc. # 18405 Unless otherwise noted, you can use these features only in the VCR mode (when the power switch is set to VCR). VISUAL SEARCH Visual search lets you view a tape at a fast speed in the forward or reverse direction. To use this function, begin regular tape playback. The press FAST-F to search forward or REWIND to search backward. The tape moves about three times normal speed in the direction you choose. Press PLAY to return to normal speed playback. During visual search, the sound is muted and the picture quality is lower than during normal playback. FAST-FORWARD & REWIND When the camcorder is in the stop mode, press FAST-F to move the tape rapidly forward. Press REWIND to move the tape rapidly backward. There is no sound or picture during fast-forward or rewind. Use the digital counter to locate specific sections of the recording. See "Digital Counter," Faxback Doc. # 18400, Special Features. FREEZE-FRAME Freeze-Frame lets you stop the action while playing a tape. Press PAUSE/ STILL during playback to freeze the picture. Press PAUSE/STILL again to return to normal playback. During freeze-frame, the picture quality is lower than for normal viewing. If you leave the camcorder in the freeze-frame mode for 5 minutes, it automatically switches to the stop mode. AUTO TRACKING The Model 128's auto tracking feature automatically adjusts the tracking for optimum playback of tapes recorded on other camcorders or VCRs. If noise still appears, press POWER FOCUS F and N as needed, to adjust the picture during playback. DUBBING FROM THE CAMCORDER To copy a tape from the camcorder to another VCR, do the following: 1. Set AV IN/EDIT/AV OUT to AV OUT. 2. Connect the audio/video cable's yellow phono plug to the camcorder's VIDEO jack and white plug to the AUDIO jack. 3. Connect the other ends of the audio/video cable to the VCR's input jacks - the yellow plug to the video and the white plug to the audio. 4. If your VCR is stereo, use a Y-adapter to connect the white plug to both audio inputs. 5. Set your VCR to the audio/video mode. Some VCRs have a manual input- select switch - others automatically sense when you connect to the audio/video input jacks. 6. Play the tape on the camcorder to locate the segment you want to copy. Then press PAUSE/STILL on the camcorder. 7. Set the camcorder's AV IN/EDIT/AV OUT switch to EDIT. 8. Begin recording on the recording VCR, and press PAUSE/STILL on the camcorder to begin playback. You can monitor the dubbing on the TV connected to your VCR. See the VCR's owner's manual. When you finish dubbing, set the AV IN/EDIT/AV OUT switch to AV OUT. DUBBING TO THE CAMCORDER To copy a tape to the camcorder from another VCR. 1. Set AV IN/EDIT/AV OUT to AV IN. 2. Connect the audio/video cable's yellow phono plug to the camcorder's VIDEO jack and white plug to the AUDIO jack. 3. Connect the other ends of the audio/video cable to your VCR's audio and video output jacks - the yellow plug to video and the white plug to audio. 4. Slide the power switch to VCR so the power indicator lights. 5. Insert a cassette into the camcorder. 6. Press RECORD. 7. Begin playback on the VCR or other component. 8. Press STOP to stop recording, The focus, fade, self timer, backlight/gain up, white balance, and shutter speed features have no effect on this type of recording. AUDIO EDITING The audio editing feature lets you record a new soundtrack on a previously recorded tape without erasing the original pictures. When you use audio editing, the previous audio is erased and replaced with new sound. You can use sounds picked up by the camcorder's built-in microphone, an external microphone, or signals from an audio source connected to the AUDIO jack. NOTE: To edit using an external audio source, set AV IN/EDIT/AV OUT to AV IN. To edit using sound from the built-in microphone, set AV IN/EDIT/AV to AV OUT. 1. Insert the recorded cassette. Be sure the erase-protection tab is intact. 2. Slide the power switch to VCR so the power indicator lights. 3. Play the tape up to the point where you want the audio dub to start. Then press PAUSE/STILL. The camcorder enters the freeze-frame mode. 4. Press AUDIO INSERT. AUDIO DUB.|| appears in the viewfinder. 5. Activate the new audio source, and press PAUSE/STILL to begin audio dubbing. AUDIO DUB appears in the viewfinder. 6. Press STOP to stop audio dubbing. NOTE: To prevent feedback squeals, turn down the volume controls on any TV or monitor connected to the camcorder. VIDEO EDITING The video editing feature lets you record new video on a previously recorded tape without erasing the original soundtrack. When you use video editing, the camcorder replaces the previous video with new pictures. You can record what you see in the viewfinder, whether it is from the camcorder's lens or another video source connected to the VIDEO jack. NOTE: To edit using an external video source, set AV IN/EDIT/AV OUT to AV IN. To edit using the image seen through the camcorder's lens, set AV IN/EDIT/AV OUT to AV OUT. 1. Insert the recorded cassette. Be sure the erase-protection tab is intact. 2. Slide the power switch to VCR so the power indicator lights. 3. Play the tape up to the point where you want the video edit to end. 4. Press COUNTER MEMORY/DISPLAY until M appears in the viewfinder next to the counter reading. The press COUNTER RESET to reset the counter to 0000. 5. Rewind the tape past the dubbing start position. Then press PLAY to reach the exact start position. When you reach the start position, press PAUSE/STILL. 6. Press VIDEO INSERT. INSERT || appears in the viewfinder. 7. Press PAUSE/STILL. Insert editing starts and automatically stops when the counter shows 0000. To stop recording before reaching 0000, press STOP. To protect the tape, the camcorder releases the tape tension and enters the stop mode when it is left longer than 5 minutes in the record pause mode. VIDEO CASSETTE HANDLING Properly handling your video cassettes lengthens their life and the life of your camcorder. Always treat them with care. Use only tapes with the official VHS logo. NOTE: Occasionally the tape is wound too tightly. This can cause improper camcorder operation. You can loosen the tape in most cassettes by pressing the brake-release plunger located on the bottom-center of the cassette. Use the tip of a pen or pencil to press the plunger. Cassette Storage Store video cassettes in their protective boxes in a cool, dry, dust-free environment. Use video cassette racks that hold the cassettes on end, not on their sides. This prevents improperly settling of the tape spool. Erase-Protection Tab Video cassette have an erase protection feature to prevent accidental tape erasure. If the erase-protection tab is missing, the camcorder cannot record on the tape. If you try to record on a tape with the erase-protection tab missing. PROTECT TAB appears in the viewfinder. If you want to record on a tape that does not have the tab, put a piece of heavy plastic tape over tab hole. DEW PROTECTION SYSTEM Moisture can collect inside the camcorder under certain conditions. This can damage the camcorder when the tape moves. To prevent this damage, DEW appears in the viewfinder, the power indicator flashes, and the camcorder does not operate until the moisture is gone. If this happens, press EJECT and remove the cassette. Then wait until DEW disappears from the viewfinder. The time required depends on the surrounding temperature. CAUTION: Moisture can form very quickly when you move the camcorder from a cold area to a warmer one - for example, when bringing the camcorder indoors after skiing - and it might take the dew sensor a few minutes to activate. Before operating the camcorder, always let it adjust to area's temperature when you: Place the camcorder in a cold room and heat the room rapidly Move the camcorder outdoors from an air conditioned room Move the camcorder from a very cold to a very warm environment (such as moving from outdoors to indoors on a cold day). Avoid using the camcorder in excessively humid areas. STORING THE CAMCORDER AND ACCESSORIES Follow these procedures to store the camcorder and its accessories. 1. Position the divider inside the case as shown. 2. Turn the viewfinder down. 3. Place the camcorder into the soft case. 4. Store the AC adapter, battery, cassette tapes (optional), and other accessories in the pockets. CAUTION: Do not leave a cassette tape inside the camcorder during storage. TRANSPORTING THE CAMCORDER Follow these instructions to transport the camcorder. 1. After you close the cover, lock it by firmly pressing the hook-and-loop tape. 2. Adjust the length of the strap so it is comfortable for you. Lengthen the strap by moving it in the direction of the arrows. Shorten the strap by moving it in the opposite direction of the arrows. CAUTIONS: Do not swing the carrying case by the strap. When transporting the camcorder, be sure that the case cover is securely closed. (LB 10/31/95)
