Model 800 (160-0654) Recording Faxback Doc. # 3604 There are four ways to recording using your VCR -- immediate recording, one touch timer recording, automatic timer recording, and dubbing. Your VCR automatically adjusts the audio recording level. The video cassette you use for recording must have the erase-protection window opened. If the window is closed, the cassette automatically ejects if you try to record on it. The remote control has two REC buttons. You must press both buttons to begin manual recording using the remote control. This safety features helps prevent accidental erasure of a tape. TAPE SELECTION The quality of tape you use greatly affects record/playback quality and the life of the VCR. High-grade tape has a better oxide coating that helps prevent dirty video heads. This type of tape gives the best results. The following chart shows the maximum recording times for different-length tapes at the two recording speeds. ┌─────────────────┬──────────────────────────────┐ │ Tape Speed │ Recording/Playback time │ ├─────────────────┼─────────────────┬────────────┤ │ Cassette used │ SP mode │ LP mode │ ├─────────────────┼─────────────────┼────────────┤ │ P6-60 │ 1 hour │ 2 hours │ ├─────────────────┼─────────────────┼────────────┤ │ P6-90 │ 1 hour │ 3 hours │ │ │ 30 minutes │ │ ├─────────────────┼─────────────────┼────────────┤ │ P6-120 │ 2 hours │ 4 hours │ └─────────────────┴─────────────────┴────────────┘ NOTE: You may notice that some color shades differ slightly from the original picture when playing back a tape recorded in the LP mode. IMMEDIATE RECORDING You can record the same program you watch or record one program while you watch another. Recording the Same Program You Watch 1. Turn on the VCR and the TV. If you use a TV monitor, set it to the video mode and skip Steps 2 and 3. 2. Set the TV tuner to the same channel as the VCR's 3CH/4CH switch. 3. Press TV/VCR so that VCR appears on the display. 4. Insert the tape you want to record on into the VCR. 5. Press TAPE SPEED to display the desired recording speed (SP or LP) on the Model 800. 6. Press CHANNEL \/ or /\ to use the remote control's number buttons to select the desired channel. 7. Press RECORD (both REC buttons on the remote). The record indicators appears on the screen. You can press PAUSE/STILL during recording to temporarily pause recording (during commercials, for example). To resume recording, press PAUSE/STILL again or record. 8. Press STOP to stop recording. Recording One Program While You Watch Another 1. Follow Step 1-7 in the previous section. 2. Press TV/VCR so VCR does not appear on the VCR's display. If you use a TV monitor, be sure to set it to the TV mode. 3. Set the TV tuner to the channel you want to watch. 4. Press STOP to stop recording. NOTE: The RECORD button on the front panel also starts one-touch timer recording. If you accidentally press RECORD twice and start OTR (see "One-Touch Timer Recording" below), press RECORD repeatedly until the display shows 0:00 or the previous counter setting. Normal recording resumes. One-Touch Timer Recording One-touch timer recording (OTR) automatically stops recording after the length of time you select (30 minutes to 6 hours). You need not attend to the VCR while recording. After setting the VCR for recording, press RECORD/OTR on the front panel twice to begin recording. The OTR indicator and 0:30 appear on the display. Then press RECORD/OTR recording length. The recording lengths are displayed in 30-minute increments, up to 6 hours. You can also use one-touch timer recording for copying (dubbing) from another VCR or other video device. See "Dubbing." OTR Hints To ensure that you record all of the desired program, select a recording length longer than the program material. OTR cannot function if a cassette is not inserted, if the erase- protection window is closed, or if an automatic timer recording is in progress. To cancel OTR, press STOP. The VCR's power turns off at the end of OTR. You can check automatic timer program settings during OTR. See "Automatic Timer Recording." When the OTR is in progress, the only operable buttons are TV/VCR, STOP, MENU, STATUS SELECT, and COUNTER MEMORY. AUTOMATIC TIMER RECORDING SETTING THE PROGRAM TIMERS 1. The recording starts in the SP mode and then changes to the LP mode so all of the timer recording fits up to the end of the tape. This function is available only in Program No. 1. Select AUTO when you set the tape speed. Making an Automatic Timer Recording After you set the automatic program timer(s), check to be sure that the tape you want to record on its is n the cassette compartment. Then press POWER. The standby timer indicator appears on the display to indicate that the VCR is in the timer standby mode. You can turn on and operate the VCR manually prior to the set times. But the VCR makes the automatic timer recording(s) only if the power is off at the set start time(s). Automatic Timer Recording Notes If two timer programs overlap, the one that starts first has priority. When the first program ends, the VCR switches to recording the remainder of the second program. During the automatic timer recording, all buttons on the Model 800 are inoperative except for STOP. STOP on the remote control does not function during automatic timer recording mode. If a tape is not loaded or the erase-protection window is closed, the standby indicator flashes to indicate the automatic timer recording cannot occur. Press POWER to stop the flashing. Open the erase- protection window or load another cassette. Edit search is similar to RECORD/PAUSE, but RECORD/PAUSE only temporarily stops recording. With Edit Search, you can replace previously recorded video with new material, lending a professional touch to your home video recordings. You may edit using either the VCR's tuner or another video source connected to the Model 800's A/V inputs. Using the Tuner with Edit Search 1. With a pre-recorded tape in the Model 800, use PLAY/FAST-F/REW to generally locate the segment you wish to edit. Note the counter length of the segment. 2. Press PAUSE/STILL and then RECORD (both REC buttons on the remote). The TV switches to the tuner display. 3. Press and hold either REW or FAST-F. The display shows the recording and the counter reverses or advances at a slower rate, so you can exactly locate the point where you want to begin editing. 4. Press PAUSE/STILL again to start editing. Watch the counter on the Model 800 closely to see when you have reached the end of the segment. Press STOP to end the edit. Using Another A/V Source with Edit Search 1. Prepare the source you will be dubbing from and connect it to one set of the Model 800's A/V input jacks. NOTE: Always use video quality shielded cables with phono connectors. Do not use standard audio patch cords. 2. Press CHANNEL /\ or \/ repeatedly on the Model 800 to select the appropriate A/V inputs jacks (L1 or L2). 3. With a pre-recorded tape in the Model 800, use the PLAY/FAST-F/REW to generally locate the segment of the tape you wish to edit. Note the counter length of the segment. 4. Press PAUSE/STILL and then RECORD (both REC buttons on the remote). The TV then switches to the L1 or L2 display. 5. Press and hold either REW or FAST-F. The display shows the recording you want to edit, and the counter reverses or advances at a slower rate, so you can exactly locate the point where you want to begin editing. 6. Start the input source and press PAUSE/STILL on the Model 800 again to start closely to see when you have reached the end of the segment. Press STOP to end the edit. DUBBING The process of recording from one VCR to another is called dubbing. You can use a camcorder, satellite receiver, or other device, satellite receiver, or other device with A/V outputs in place of the playback VCR. Always use video-quality shielded cables with phono connectors. Do not use standard audio patch cord. Connections for Dubbing Connect the recording VCR's video and audio inputs jacks to the corresponding video and audio output jacks on the playback VCR. If the other VCR is mono, use a Y-adapter (available at your local Radio Shack store) to connect the other VCR's audio jack to both left and right audio jacks on the Model 800. Selecting the A/V Input Source The Model 800 has two sets of audio/video input jacks, rear panel AUDIO/ VIDEO LINE IN 1 jacks and front panel AUDIO/VIDEO LINE IN 2 jacks. You can use either set for dubbing. To select the A/V input source, press CHANNEL /\ or \/ repeatedly until the display shows L1 for LINE IN 1 jacks and L2 for LINE IN 2. (These two channels are located between the highest number channel and lowest number channel.) Setting the Video NR Switch This function allows you to get better picture quality while dubbing. Set it to EDIT to use the Model 800 as the playback VCR for copying a tape to another VCR. The MAX position is used to copy an older tape from the Model 800 to anther VCR. Dubbing a Video Cassette Follow these steps to dub a video cassette. 1. Insert a pre-recorded video cassette into the playback VCR. 2. Insert a blank video cassette, or one you want to record over, into the recording VCR's cassette compartment. 3. Set the recording VCR to the A/V mode. If you are using the Model 800 as the recording VCR, be sure to correctly set it to L1 or L2 A/V input mode. See "Selecting the A/V Input Source." 4. Select the desired recording speed on the recording VCR. 5. Start recording on the recording VCR. 6. Begin playback of the tape in the playback VCR. NOTE: For best results during dubbing, use the VCR's front panel controls whenever possible. The remote control of one VCR might affect the operation of the other VCR. Monitoring Recording If you are using the Model 800 as the recording VCR, follow these steps to monitor a video cassette tape as you record. 1. Turn on the TV connected to the Model 800 and set it to the same channel as the Model 800's 3CH/4CH switch. 2. Press TV/VCR on the Model 800 so VCR appears on the display.
