Model-84 VHS HQ VCR (160-0522) VCR Operation Faxback Doc. # 31339 PLAYING A PRE-RECORDED TAPE 1. Turn on the TV. 2. Set the TV tuner to the same channel as the VCR's 3CH/4CH switch-either 3 or 4. See "Setting the 3CH/4CH Switch." If you are using a TV monitor that is connected to the VCR's AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks, set the monitor to the video mode. See "Connection for a TV Monitor", Faxback Doc. # 31336. 3. Position the cassette with the main label facing up and the spine label facing out from the VCR. Then, insert the cassette into the cassette compartment by gently pushing on the center of the cassette's spine until the VCR completely draws in the cassette. The VCR turns on automatically and the tape indicator lights. If the erase-protection tab has been removed from the cassette, playback begins automatically. See "Video Cassette Handling." CAUTION: Never insert anything except a VHS video cassette into the cassette compartment. You might damage the VCR's internal mechanisms. 4. If playback does not begin automatically, press [PLAY]. Press [STOP] to stop playback before the end of the tape. Then, press [EJECT] to remove the tape. If the tape reaches the end before you press [STOP], the VCR automatically stops the tape, completely rewinds it. The VCR ejects the cassette and turns off after the tape fully rewinds. NOTE: You can press [EJECT] to eject a cassette when the VCR is off. The VCR's power turns on temporarily while the cassette ejects. STORING YOUR VIDEO CASSETTES Unless you are making an automatic timer recording, eject and store the cassette before turning off the VCR. This helps protect your cassette and VCR's internal mechanisms from dust. Place your video cassettes in their protective boxes and store them in a cool, dry, dust-free environment. Store the cassettes on end, not on their sides. This prevents improper setting of the spool of tape. NOTE: Tape can become wound too tightly around the cassette's spools after numerous playings. This can cause the cassette to load improperly and eject automatically when you insert it. On most cassettes, there is a brake-release plunger on the bottom center of the cassette. Use the tip of a pen or pencil to press the plunger and loosen the tape. ERASE-PROTECTION TAB Video cassettes have an erase-protection feature to prevent accidental erasure of a tape. If the erase-protection tab is removed, the VCR cannot record on the tape. The tape is ejected automatically if you try to record on it. If you want to record on a tape that does not have the tab, put a piece of heavy plastic tape over the tab hole. HOW THE TUNER WORKS The Model 84's 153-channel PLL tuner is active when the VCR's power is on and you set the INPUT SELECT switch to TUNER mode. The tuner has two functions. It lets you select what the VCR records. It lets you select the VCR's output when VCR appears on the VCR's display (when the VCR is neither playing nor recording). The tuner has no affect on recording or VCR output when you set the INPUT SELECT switch to A/V mode or when the power is off. SETTING THE TV/CATV SWITCH Depending on the setting of the TV/CATV switch in the VCR's control compartment, the tuner can receive VHF/UHF channels (2-69) or cable channels (1, 14-94 and 97-99). When you set the switch to TV, the tuner selects VHF/UHF channels. If you set the TV/CATV switch to either CATV position, the tuner selects cable channels. Select the position (NOR or HCR) that provides the best results, or call your cable company for more information. Even so, you still might have to experiment to determine the proper cable channel reception for your cable channel. SETTING THE 3CH/4CH SWITCH When VCR appears on the VCR's display, the VCR sends the selected video source signal from the VCR's ANT OUT terminal to the TV on the channel you select using the VCR's 3CH/4CH switch (on the back of the VCR). These signals are also present at the VCR's AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks. The 3CH/4CH switch has no effect when the VCR is off or when VCR does not appear on the display. TV/VCR BUTTON When VCR appears on the display, the source you select using the INPUT SELECT switch is sent to the ANT OUT terminal on Channel 3 or 4. When VCR does not appear on the display, antenna or cable signals connected to the ANT IN terminals pass through to the ANT IN terminals unaffected. You can use the TV tuner to select channels as if the signals were directly connected to the TV. If the VCR is turned on, the source you select using the INPUT SELECT switch is sent to the AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks, regardless of the TV/VCR setting. INPUT SELECT SWITCH Use the INPUT SELECT switch to select the signals you want to record and send to AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks. The INPUT SELECT switch affects the ANT OUT signals only when you press [TV/VCR] on the remote control so that VCR appears on the display. Set the switch to TUNER for the VCR's tuner channels and to A/V for the source connected to AUDIO/VIDEO IN jacks. NOTE: The INPUT SELECT switch has no effect when the VCR is turned off or during tape playback. PROGRAMMING THE TUNER MEMORY You can program the tuner's memory so that when you press CHANNEL [DOWN] or [UP], the VCR's tuner scans only the active channels in your area. 1. Turn on the VCR and the TV that is connected to it. If you are using a TV monitor, set it to the video mode and skip Steps 2 and 3. 2. Set the TV to the same channel as the 3CH/4CH switch. 3. Press [TV/VCR] on the remote control unit so that VCR appears on the display 4. Set the INPUT SELECT switch to TUNER. 5. Set the CATV switch for the type of signals you plan to receive. 6. Press [PRESET]. 7. If you want to store all the active channels in your area in the tuner memory, press [TUNING]. The display scans through the channels and all active channels are automatically stored. 8. If you do not want to store all the active channels, use the CHANNEL [DOWN/UP] or the remote control's number buttons to select a channel you want to program. (If the channel number display lights steadily, the channel is already stored). Then, press [ADD]. The channel display stops the flash to indicate that the channel is stored. 9. Repeat Step 8 to manually store additional channels in the tuner memory. When you finish manual programming, press [PRESET] to exit the programming mode. See "Removing a Channel from Memory." REMOVING A CHANNEL FROM MEMORY Use this procedure to remove from memory the channels you no longer receive or the channels you seldom watch. 1. Press [PRESET]. 2. Press either of the [CHANNEL] buttons until the desired channel number appears on the display. 3. Press [CANCEL]. The channel indicator flashes. 4. Press [ENTER]. The channel indicator stops flashing. The channel number is still on the display but is erased from memory. The next time you scan, the channel does not appear. 5. Repeat Steps 1 through 4 to erase other memory channels. You can directly select channels that are not in the tuner's memory using the remote control's number buttons. CHANNEL SELECTION There are two methods of channel selection: scanning and direct. To scan for a channel - press either [CHANNEL] button. The tuner automatically advances to the next programmed channel in the direction of the arrow on the button you press. When the tuner reaches the highest programmed channel (Channel 69, for example), the tuner returns to the lowest programmed channel. When the tuner reaches the lowest programmed channel (Channel 2, for example), the tuner returns to the highest programmed channel. The tuner does not scan scrambled channels. To directly select a channel - you must use the remote control. Simply press the number buttons for the desired channel. You must precede one-digit channel numbers with a zero (02, 03, 04, and so on). With direct channel selection, you can choose any channel in the tuner's range, even if you have not programmed the channel, if there is no broadcast present, or if the channel is scrambled. (The tuner does not unscramble the channel). NORMAL TV VIEWING Follow these steps for normal TV viewing. 1. Turn on the TV. 2. Turn off the VCR, or press [TV/VCR] on the remote control so that VCR does not appear on the display. The antenna or cable signals pass through the VCR unaffected, as if they were directly connected to the TV. If you are using a TV monitor, be sure to set it to the TV mode. 3. Select the desired channel, using the TV's tuner. (RF/all-03/22/96)
