Model 801 (160-0655) Connections Faxback Doc. # 31383 VCR CONNECTIONS Follow these steps to make the most basic connections necessary to begin using your VCR. 1. Disconnect the antenna or cable wires from your TV's antenna terminal. 2. Connect the antenna or cable wires to the VCR's combined IN FROM ANT terminal. 3. Connect one end of the supplied 75-ohm coaxial cable to the VCR's OUT TO TV terminal. 4. Connect the other end of the cable to the TV's antenna terminal. NOTE: If you subscribe to a cable service, see "Cable TV Connections, Faxback Doc. # ." CABLE TV CONNECTIONS Use Connection A if you want to watch one channel while you record another. Use Connection B if you receive scrambled channels. Connection A With Connection A, you can watch one channel while you record another. Connect the Cable TV cable as described in Steps 1 through 3 of "Basic VCR Connections." Then connect the other end of the supplied 75-ohm cable to the cable box or directly to the TV/monitor's antenna input terminal(s). (See "TV/Monitor Connections.") NOTES: Some states have laws that restrict making connections that do not go through the cable box (connecting cable wires directly to your TV or VCR). Check the laws in your area before you make cable connections.") If your TV does not have a cable-compatible tuner, you must connect the cable box between the VCR and the TV as described in "Connection A." NOTE: These connections require a 75-ohm splitter (such as Cat. No. 15-1141), a high-isolation A/B switch (such as Cat. No. 15-1249), and five 75-ohm cable wires (such as Cat. No. 15-1530). Your local Radio Shack store offers a large selection of splitters, cables, and switches to choose from. Follow these steps to make Connection B. 1. Disconnect the cable wire from your TV's ANTENNA IN terminal. 2. Connect the cable wire to the 75-ohm splitter's input terminal. 3. Connect one end of the first 75-ohm cable to either of the two output terminals on the splitter. 4. Connect the cable's other end to the cable box's ANTENNA IN terminal. 5. Connect one end of the second 75-ohm cable to the cable box's ANTENNA OUT terminal. 6. Connect the cable's other end to the VCR's VHF/UHF IN FROM ANT terminal. 7. Connect one end of the third 75-ohm cable to the splitter's other output terminal. 8. Connect the cable's other end to a high-isolation A/B switch's A INPUT terminal. 9. Connect one end of the fourth 75-ohm cable to the VCR's VHF/UHF OUT TO TV terminal. 10. Connect the cable's other end to the high-isolation A/B switch's B INPUT terminal. 11. Connect one end of the fifth 75-ohm cable to the high-isolation A/B switch's OUTPUT terminal. 12. Connect the cable's other end to the TV/monitor's antenna input terminal(s). (See "TV/Monitor Connections, Faxback Doc. #") Use the cable box to select the channel you want to record. Then use the A/B switch to view the non-scrambled channels you can directly tune to on your TV, or the channel you select using the cable box. NOTES: If you have a second cable box, you can record one scrambled channel while you watch a different scrambled channel. The tuner does not unscramble premium cable channels. Note to the Cable TV System Installer: This reminder is provided to call the CATV system installer's attention to Article 820-22 of the National Electrical Code. This article provides guidelines for proper grounding and particularly specifies that the cable ground be connected to the grounding system of the building, as close to cable entry as practical. TV/MONITOR CONNECTIONS Many TVs have separate audio and video inputs and antenna connection terminals. Many older television sets have VHF/UHF/75-ohm connection terminals but no separate audio and video input terminals. If your TV has both inputs, we recommend you connect to both. The antenna input lets you tune to channels using your TV's tuner and the A/V inputs provide a higher-quality picture when you view a tape or tune using the VCR's tuner. TV Connections If your TV has a 75-ohm combined VHF/UHF antenna terminal, connect the cable directly to it. If your TV has separate terminals for VHF and UHF, follow these steps. 1. Connect the 75-ohm cable coming from the VCR, cable box, or hi- isolation switch to a VHF/UHF splitter's input terminal (we recommend Cat. No. 15-1252). 2. Connect the splitter's 75-ohm output wire to the TV's VHF terminal. 3. Connect the splitter's 300 ohm output wires to the TV's UHF terminal. Audio/Video Connections Connect the VCR's AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks to your TV/monitor's AUDIO/VIDEO IN jacks. NOTES: Direct audio/video connections usually result in better picture and sound during playback and when you use the VCR's tuner. Use video-quality shielded cables with phone connectors. Do not use standard audio cables. STEREO CONNECTIONS Stereo signals from the VCR's tuner or from a stereo hi-fi recording are sent to the VCR's AUDIO OUT jacks. If you want to connect your current stereo system to the AUDIO OUT jacks, refer to the drawing below. The OUTPUT button setting on the remote control and MTS SELECT on the MODE SET menu affect the VCR's stereo output. NOTES: The audio signals from OUT TO TV are always monaural. To hear a stereo signal, you must connect the AUDIO OUT L and R jacks to a stereo amplifier or stereo TV having audio input jacks. Use video-quality shielded cable with phono connectors. Do not use standard audio cables. DUBBING CONNECTIONS You can connect another VCR to your Model 801 so you can dub (copy) tapes. Follow these steps to connect another VCR. NOTES: The following connections require one A/V (audio/video) cable (such as Cat. No. 15-1504). Your local Radio Shack store offers a large selection of audio/video cables to choose from. If the playback VCR's audio signals are monaural, connect the AUDIO OUT L terminal only. If the signals are stereo, connect both AUDIO OUT L and R terminals. CAUTION: This connection might produce poor audio/video quality. 1. Connect the A/V cable's audio-end to the playback VCR's AUDIO OUT L and R terminals. 2. Connect the A/V cable's other audio-end to the recording VCR's AUDIO IN terminal. 3. Connect the A/V cable's video-end to the playback VCR's VIDEO OUT terminal. 4. Connect the A/V cable's other video-end to the recording VCR's VIDEO IN terminal. AC POWER CONNECTION Plug the supplied AC cord into the VCR's AC IN receptacle, and then plug the cord into a standard AC outlet. -|- appears on the VCR's display. (SP/br 3/19/96)
