Press MENU to store the information. NOTES: * If you enter an invalid date or time (for example, 13:00 for the time), the cursor returns to the incorrect setting when you press MENU. Enter the correct date or time. * Seconds begin counting at 00 when you press MENU. * If you do not enter anything for about 60 seconds, the display returns to the normal blue screen display. SELECTING TV/CATV Depending on the type of broadcast signals you receive, you must select the correct TV/CATV setting on the SET UP menu. If you have cable service and use a cable box between the cable wire and the VCR, or if you do not have cable service and want to receive up to 68 VHF/UHF channels, select TV. If you have cable service and the cable wire is connected directly to the VCR without a cable box, select one of the CATV settings - STD, HRC, or IRC - depending on your type of cable service. Most cable systems use STD, but if you are not sure what type of cable service you have, contact your cable company. 1. Press MENU on the remote control. The menu display appears on the TV screen. 2. Press 2 to select SET UP. 3. Press 1 to select TV/CATV. 4. Press CHANNEL \/ or /\ to select TV, CATV-STD, CATV-HRC, or CATV-IRC. 5. Press 7 to exit the SET UP menu. PROGRAMMING THE TUNER'S MEMORY You can program the tuner's memory so when you press CHANNEL \/ or /\, the VCR's tuner scans only the active channels in your area. 1. Press MENU on the remote control. The menu display appears on the TV screen. 2. Press 2 to select SET UP. 3. Press 2 to program the tuner's memory. 4. Press CHANNEL \/ or /\. The tuner scans through the channels (TV or CATV) and memorizes all the active channels in your area. After scanning all the channels, the tuner stops on the lowest numbered active channel. 5. Press CHANNEL \/ or /\ to check the memory's contents. NOTE: You can directly select channels that are not in the tuner's memory using the remote control's number buttons. See "Channel Selection", below. Adding/Erasing Channels If the tuner stores a channel that you do not want, tune to that channel and press ADD/ERASE. ER appears on the VCR's display, ERASE appears on the TV screen for about 3 seconds, and the unwanted channel is erased from the tuner's memory. If you want to program a weak channel that automatic programming missed, enter the desired channel number using the remote control's number buttons. Then press ADD/ERASE. Ad appears on the VCR's display, ADD appears on the TV screen for about 3 seconds, and the channel is added to the memory. CHANNEL SELECTION There are two ways to select a channel - manual and direct. To manually select a channel, press CHANNEL \/ or /\. The tuner automatically advances to the next programmed channel. NOTE: If you press CHANNEL /\ when the tuner is at the highest programmed channel or CHANNEL \/ when the tuner is at the lowest programmed channel, the VCR enters$the audio/video mode and the display shows AV1 or AV2 (see "Selecting the Input Mode", below). Press either button again to enter the other audio/video mode (AV2 or AV1). Pressing either button again tunes to the highest or lowest programmed channel. To directly select a channel, press the remote control's number buttons for the desired channel. You must precede one-digit channel numbers with 0- 01, 02, 03, and so on. For three-digit channel numbers, press 100. Then enter the second and third digits in the channel number. Cable Channels Your VCR can receive up to 125 cable channels. The VCR displays the channels as 1-125. Channels 2-13 are the same for VHF and cable TV, and cable companies usually number them as they appear on the display. However, cable companies often designate other cable channels with letters or letter-number combinations. For more information, contact your cable company. You still might have to experiment to determine the proper cable channel designations for your cable system. CONTROLLING VCR INPUTS AND OUTPUTS This section describes how to control the signals you record, watch, and hear using the VCR's OUTPUT CHANNEL switch, the remote control's TV/VCR and INPUT buttons, and the SET UP menu. SETTING THE OUTPUT CHANNEL SWITCH Set the VCR's OUTPUT CHANNEL switch (on the back of the VCR) to 3 or 4, whichever is not an active channel in your area. When VCR appears on the display, the VCR sends the selected video source from its OUT terminal to the TV on the channel you selected. The OUTPUT CHANNEL switch has no effect on the TV when the VCR is off, when VCR does not appear on the display, or if you are using a TV which has separate audio/video input jacks and which is set to the video mode. USING THE TV/VCR BUTTON The Model 57's 179-channel (68 VHF/UHF channels, 111 cable channels) tuner is active anytime you turn it on. Press the TV/VCR button on the remote control SO VCR appears on the display, and you can then use the VCR's tuner to select the channel you view. To select a channel with the TV's tuner, press TV/VCR so VCR does not show. If you are using a TV/monitor connected to the VCR's AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks, set it to the TV mode. NOTE: Whenever the VCR is on, the signals from the VCR are sent to the AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks, regardless of the TV/VCR setting. SELECTING THE INPUT MODE To choose a signal to record, press INPUT on the remote control until the desired indicator appears on the display window; a channel number for recording VHF/UHF signals, AV1 for recording signals from the rear AUDIO/ VIDEO IN jacks, or AV2 for recording signals from the front input jacks. NOTE: INPUT has no effect during tape playback or when the VCR is turned off. SETTING THE AUDIO OUTPUT Your VCR has 3 channels for audio recording - stereo (left and right) channels on the Hi-Fi track and a monaural channel on the linear track. You can select which audio output channels you hear when you connect the VCR to your stereo system (or to a stereo TV). The AUDIO OUTPUT setting is useful when the main signal is recorded on the left channel, and a SAP signal is recorded on the right channel. You can change the AUDIO OUTPUT setting so you hear only the regular audio program, only the SAP program, or the two combined. See "Receiving Stereo/SAP Broadcasts", below. NOTE: The AUDIO OUTPUT setting has no effect on recording. Follow these steps to select the audio output setting. 1. Press MENU on the remote control. 2. Press 2 to select SET UP. 3. Press 6 or MENU on the remote control or SET UP on the VCR until 6: AUDIO OUT flashes. 4. Press CHANNEL \/ or /\ to select the desired audio output mode. Depending on the selected audio output mode, the following chart shows which audio channels you hear when you receive a stereo broadcast or play back a stereo video cassette through a stereo system or stereo TV connected to the VCR. Display VHF Output AUDIO OUT [L] - [R] (Stereo) [L] + [R] combined (mono) Left channel from [L] OUT, right from [R] OUT [L] Left channel only Left channel from [L] and [R] [R] Right channel only Right channel from [L] and [R] LINEAR Regular audio track Regular audio track from [L] and [R] 5. Press 7 to exit the menu display NOTES: * If you play a tape recorded on a standard VCR, the Model 57 plays the linear audio track, regardless of the audio output setting. * If the audio program was recorded on two linear channels on a stereo but not Hi-Fi VCR, the stereo signal becomes mono, and the SAP signal becomes the main and SAP audio programs mixed together. RECEIVING STEREO/SAP BROADCASTS Your VCR can receive and record stereo or SAP (Separate Audio Program) broadcasts when available. The settings of AUDIO OUT and SAP ON/OFF work together to determine which stereo signals you receive and record. If the broadcast is in stereo, STEREO appears on the TV screen and the VCR automatically records the stereo sound. When the broadcast contains a SAP signal, you can choose to record both the main stereo signal and the SAP sound or only the main stereo signal by changing the SAP setting in the SET UP menu. 1. Press MENU on the remote control. 2. Press 2 to select SET UP. 3. Press 5 or MENU on the remote control or SET UP on the VCR until 5: SAP flashes. 4. Press CHANNEL \/ or /\ to select ON or OFF. 5. Press 7 on the remote control to exit the menu display. SAP appears on the TV screen as an indicator in white-on-black letters when SAP is set to on. When a SAP signal is present, SAP appears next to the on indicator. The following chart shows what is recorded on the left and right channels for each SAP setting. BROADCAST TYPE SAP SETTING TUNER SELECTED AUDIO REGULAR TRACK Stereo OFF L R L+R ON L R L+R Stereo/SAP OFF L R L+R ON L+R SAP SAP When you watch the SAP broadcast or recording, you can listen to either the main signal or the SAP signal. To listen to the main signal, set SAP to OFF and AUDIO OUT to L-R. To listen to the SAP signal, set SAP to ON and AUDIO OUT to R. VIEWING TV VIEWING TV USING THE TV's TUNER Turn off the VCR, or press TV/VCR on the remote control until VCR does not appear on the VCR's display. If you are using a TV/monitor connected to the VCR's AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks, be sure to set it to the TV mode. The antenna or cable signals pass through the VCR unaffected, as if the antenna or cable were connected directly to the TV. Use the TV as you normally would. VIEWING TV USING THE VCR'S TUNER 1. Turn on the TV and set it to the same channel as the VCR's OUTPUT CHANNEL switch (3 or 4). If you are using a TV/monitor that is connected to the VCR's AUDIO/VIDEO OUT jacks, set it to the video mode. (See "If Your TV Has Audio/Video (A/V) Input Jacks" on Faxback Doc. # 31720). 2. Press TV/VCR until VCR appears on the VCR's display. 3. Press CHANNEL \/ or /\ on the remote control, or use the remote control's number buttons to select the desired channel. PLAYING A TAPE 1. Turn on the TV and set it to the same channel as the VCR's OUTPUT CHANNEL switch (3 or 4). If you are using a TV/monitor that is connected to the VCR's AUDIO/ VIDEO OUT jacks, set it to the video mode. 2. Hold the cassette with the main label facing up and the spine facing out form the VCR. Then insert the cassette into the VCR's compartment and gently push the center of its spine until the VCR draws it in. The VCR automatically turns on, the clock display changes to the tape counter, and the play indicator (>) appears if the tape's erase protection tab is removed. The stop indicator (<<||>>) and channel number appear if the erase protection tab is in place. See "Erase Protection", on Faxback Doc. # 31727. If the erase-protection tab has been removed from the cassette, playback automatically begins (see "Erase Protection", on Faxback Doc. # 31727). CAUTION: Never insert anything except a VHS video cassette into the cassette compartment. You might damage the VCR's internal mechanisms. 3. If playback does not automatically begin, press PLAY/X2. NOTE: The VCR automatically adjusts the tracking. But if further adjustment is necessary, you can manually adjust it. See "Manual Tracking Control", on Faxback Doc. # 31728. 4. Press STOP to stop playback before the end of the tape. Then press STOP/EJECT on the VCR to eject the cassette. If the tape reaches the end before you press STOP/EJECT, the VCR automatically stops the tape and completely rewinds it and turns off. If the erase-protection tab has been removed, the VCR ejects the cassette after the tape fully rewinds. NOTES: * You can press STOP/EJECT to eject a cassette when the VCR is off. The VCR's power temporarily turns on while the cassette ejects, then automatically turns off. * If the tape is recorded in stereo Hi-Fi, select the audio output mode in the AUDIO OUTPUT setting of the SET UP menu. See "Setting the Audio Output" and "Receiving Stereo/SAP Broadcasts", above. (EB 4/9/96)
