Model 28 9-Inch Color TV/VCR (160-0420) Connections Faxback Doc. # 33159 CHOOSING A LOCATION Choose a location in your home where: Air flows freely on all sides of the Model 28. The power cord is not in the way of normal traffic. NOTE: Do not plug in the AC cord until you make all other connections. CONNECTING THE SUPPLIED ANTENNA The supplied antenna provides good reception in most areas, but for the best reception in all areas, use a high-quality outdoor antenna, available at your local Radio Shack store. See "Connecting an Outdoor Antenna" below. Follow these steps to connect the supplied antenna. 1. Insert the antenna's post into the socket on top of the Model 28's cabinet. 2. Connect the flat twin-lead cable from the antenna to the matching adapter. 3. Plug the matching adapter into the Model 28's ANT terminal. 4. Fully extend the antenna and adjust it for the best VHF reception. NOTE: To improve UHF reception, shorten the antenna. CONNECTING AN OUTDOOR ANTENNA If the antenna uses 75-Ohm coaxial cable, connect the antenna cable directly to the ANT terminal. If the antenna uses 300-ohm cable, use the supplied matching adapter to make the connection. If you have separate VHF and UHF antennas, connect the antenna cables to a signal combiner (available at your local Radio Shack store). Then connect the combiner's output to the Model 28's ANT terminal. Refer to your antenna installation instructions for additional information. CONNECTING TO A CABLE SYSTEM Note to the CATV System Installer: This reminder is provider to call the CATV system installer's attention to Article 820-40 of the National Electrical Code that provides guidelines for proper grounding and, in particular, specifies that the cable ground shall be connected to the grounding system of the building, as close to the point of cable entry as practical. To receive cable channels, connect the Model 28 to your local cable system as follows. WARNING: Some areas have laws restricting direct connections to cable wires (connections that do not go through the cable box). Check the laws in your area before making any connections. NOTE: The cable service's channel designations might not match the channel numbers that appear on the screen. See "Cable Channel Designations" below. If you do not receive scrambled channels, you can connect the cable directly to the Model 28's ANT terminal. If you receive scrambled channels, you must connect the cable to the cable converter box, then connect the cable converter box to the Model 28. Set the Model 28 to the cable box's output channel (3 or 4) and use the cable box to select the channel. Cable channel Designations Your Model 28 can receive up to 125 cable channels. It displays the channels as 1-125. Contact your local cable company for correct channel numbers. The numbers will vary depending on your location and cable company specifications. Channels 2-13 are the same for VHF and cable TV and cable companies usually number them as they appear on the display. For more information, contact your cable company. You still might have to experiment to determine the proper cable channel designations for your cable system. CONNECTING AN EXTERNAL DEVICE You can connect another audio/video device that has audio/video outputs, such as a VCR, camcorder, or satellite receiver to the Model 28, or connect a TV/monitor to view the signals from the Model 28 on a larger screen. Always use video-quality shielded cables with phono connectors. Do not use standard audio patch cords. Connect the audio/video device's video and audio outputs to the corresponding VIDEO-IN and AUDIO IN jacks on the back of the Model 28. You can also have the VIDEO and AUDIO INPUT jacks on the front panel in the same way. When you connect both audio/video input jacks, the front panel VIDEO and AUDIO INPUT jacks have priority. Connect VIDEO-OUT and AUDIO-OUT jacks on the back of the Model 28 to the corresponding video and audio input jacks on the TV/monitor. To view the signals from the Model 28 on the TV/monitor, set the TV/monitor to the video mode. VIEWING AN EXTERNAL DEVICE To view the signal from the external device connected to the VIDEO/AUDIO IN jacks, enter 00 using the remote control's number buttons, or select one channel higher than the highest programmed channel or one channel lower than the lowest programmed channel. AUX appears on the screen. CONNECTING THE AC CORD WARNING: For your protection, the power cord has a polarized plug. To preserve this protection, be sure the blades fit fully and easily into the outlet. If you do not have polarized outlets, have a qualified electrician install one before you use the Model 28. Plug the supplied AC cord's smaller end into the Model 28's AC INPUT connector. Then plug the other end into a standard AC outlet. NOTE: To power the Model 28 from your vehicle's battery, see "Using Vehicle Battery Power", below. USING VEHICLE BATTERY POWER To power the Model 28 from your vehicle's battery, plug the supplied DC power cord's small plug into the Model 28's DC 12V jack. Then plug the other end into the vehicle's cigarette-lighter socket. CAUTIONS: Your vehicle must have a 12-volt, negative-ground electrical system. Use only the supplied DC power cord. When the DC power cord is plugged in, the AC power cord is disconnected. When you use the Model 28 with AC power, disconnect the DC power cord from the Model 28. Be sure the cigarette-lighter socket is free of ashes and other debris. Always plug the DC power cord into the Model 28 before you plug it into the cigarette-lighter socket. Always unplug it from the cigarette-lighter socket before you unplug it from the Model 28. Do not leave the Model 28 connected to DC power when you are not using your vehicle. It could drain your vehicle's battery power. If you use the Model 28 with the vehicle's engine turned off, protect the vehicle's battery from completely discharging by recharging the battery after every 4 hours of use by running the engine for a few minutes. Unplug the DC power cord as soon as you finish using the Model 28. Replacing the Fuse A fuse in the DC power cord protects your Model 28. If your TV/VCR does not work when you plug it in and turn it on, check the fuse. Replace the fuse with an identical 5A/250V fuse. CAUTION: If you use a fuse with a rating higher than 5A, your TV/VCR will not be properly protected and might be damaged. If the fuse is not blown, check the lighter socket for debris, and check you vehicle's fuse. (LB/EB 5/24/96)
