Model 28 9-Inch Color TV/VCR (160-0420) VCR Operation Faxback Doc. # 33163 BASIC VCR OPERATION DEW WARNING The dew-protection system protects against tape jams and tape damage. When the dew-protection systems senses excess humidity, DEW appears on the screen and the Model 28 will not play a tape. (You can still eject the tape and watch TV). When the humidity level is acceptable, DEW disappears and you can use the Model 28. PLAYING A TAPE Follow these steps to play a tape. 1. Position the cassette with the main label facing up and the spine label facing out. Then insert the cassette into the cassette compartment by gently pushing on the center of the cassette's spine until the Model 28 completely draws in the cassette. The Model 28 turns on. If the erase-protection tab is removed, the Model 28 begins to play (see "Erase Protection Tab", on Faxback Doc. # 33164). PLAY appears on the screen. CAUTION: Never insert anything except a VHF video cassette into the cassette compartment. Doing so could damage the Model 28's internal mechanisms. 2. If playback does not automatically begin, press PLAY. PLAY appears on the screen. 3. Press VOLUME t or s to set the desired volume. NOTE: To adjust the contrast, brightness, color, tint, or sharpness, see "Picture Adjustments", on Faxback Doc. # 33162. 4. Press STOP/EJECT (or STOP on the remote control) to stop playback before the end of the tape. Then press STOP/EJECT again (or EJECT on the remote control) to eject the tape. If the tape reaches the end before you press STOP/EJECT, the Model 28 automatically stops the tape and completely rewinds it. Then the Model 28 ejects the cassette and turns off. NOTES: Even if the Model 28 is off, you can press STOP/EJECT to eject a cassette. The power temporarily turns on while the cassette ejects. You cannot select the play speed. The tape plays at its recorded speed. FAST-FORWARD/REWIND While the Model 28 is stopped, press F.FWD or REW to rapidly wind the tape. Press STOP to stop the tape. VISUAL SEARCH During playback, press F.FWD or REW to view the tape as it winds. To search at the faster speed for LP and SLP tapes, press F.FWD or REW again. To resume normal play, press PLAY. During visual search, the sound is muted and the picture is a lower quality than during normal playback. Picture quality is best with tapes recorded at the SLP speed. FREEZE-FRAME During playback, press PAUSE/STILL to freeze the picture. (The picture quality is slightly reduced.) After 5 minutes, the Model 28 automatically goes from pause to stop. To resume normal play, press PLAY. NOTE: You might notice some noise lines on the screen during freeze-frame. You can shift the line position by pressing PAUSE/STILL during the freeze-frame. You can then fast-forward or rewind past that point. If you do not want the tape to stop at the selected point, press C. MEMORY until COUNT appears next to the counter reading. Press 6 to select TIME SEARCH. 3. Press the number buttons to set the desired playback time you want to skip. (Press 2, 3, and 0 to set 2 hours 30 minutes, for example.) Repeatedly press 3 to select ALL or BLANK at the REPEAT PLAY menu. All Repeat: Repeats playback from the beginning to the blank portion with no recording for more than 10 seconds. REPEAT PLAY B appears on the screen. NOTES: Once you select the repeat play mode, it stays in effect even after you turn off the Model 28. To turn off repeat play, select OFF in Step 3. If rental play is set to on, repeat play does not function. All buttons except POWER and STOP do not work during auto repeat playback. Always set the auto repeat playback function to OFF when not in use. If the counter memory is activated, the tape automatically stops when the count returns to 0:00:00 and does not start auto repeat playback. RENTAL PLAY This function improves the picture quality when playing back worn cassettes such as those rented from a video rental store. 1. Press MENU. 2. Press 7 to select USER'S SET UP. 3. Press 2 until ON appears next to RENTAL. 4. Press MENU then press PLAY to start rental playback. RENTAL PLAY B appears on the screen. NOTE: When you select the rental mode, it stays in effect even after you turn off the Model 28. To turn off rental play select OFF in Step 3. TRACKING CONTROL Tracking adjustment will be set automatically (Digital Tracking function) when you start playback. However, there still might be a case that noise lines (black and white streaks) might appear on the playback picture when playing prerecorded tapes. If this occurs, adjust the tracking by pressing CHANNEL t or s on the TV/VCR until the streaks disappear. (You cannot adjust tracking with the remote control.) To return tracking to the position it was in when the Model 28 was shipped from the factory, press both CHANNEL t and s at the same time. If you stop the tape once and start playback again, the Model 28 returns to the Digital Tracking function. DEGAUSSING Magnetism from nearby appliances might affect the color of the TV picture. If this happens, move the Model 28 away from the appliance. In the Model 28, each time power is off, automatic degauss circuit functions. If the color is still not correct, turn the power off for 1 minute. AUTO REWIND-EJECT When the end of a tape is reached during recording, playback, or fast forward, the tape will automatically rewind to the beginning, power off and tape ejects. If the counter memory function is activated, the tape stops at the 0:00:00 count reading but does not eject and the TV/VCR does not turn off. NOTES: This function is operative when auto repeat is set to the OFF position. The tape will not auto-rewind during timer recording or one touch recording. When you press REW during auto rewind, the tape does not eject and the Model 28 does not turn off. STORING YOUR VIDEO CASSETTES Eject and store the cassette after you play it. This helps protect the video cassette and the Model 28's internal mechanisms from dust. Place your video cassettes in their protective boxes and store them in a cool, dry, dust-free area. Store the cassettes on end, not on their sides. This prevents improper setting of the tape spool. NOTE: Tape can become wound too tightly around the cassette's spools after you play a tape several times. This can cause the cassette to improperly load and automatically eject when you insert it. Most video cassettes have a brake-release plunger on the bottom center of the cassette. Use the tip of a pen or pencil to press the plunger. This loosens the tape. (LB/EB 5/24/96)
