MODEL 49 4-Head VHS Stereo Hi-Fi VCR (160-0619) Preparation Faxback Doc. # 33718 INSTALLING THE REMOTE CONTROL'S BATTERIES The remote control requires two AAA batteries (not included) for operation. We recommend alkaline batteries (Radio Shack Cat. No. 23-555). Install the batteries as shown in the battery compartment. 1. Remove the battery compartment cover by pressing the cover in the direction of the arrow. 2. Place two fresh AAA batteries in the compartment observing the polarity symbols (+ and -) marked in the compartment. 3. Replace the compartment cover. NOTE: If the remote control does not work or operates erratically, replace both batteries. CAUTION: Use only fresh batteries of the recommended size and type. Always remove old or weak batteries. They can leak chemicals that can damage electronic circuits. USING THE REMOTE CONTROL Some of the remote control's buttons are duplicated on the VCR's front panel. You can use these buttons to perform identical procedures either at the VCR or by remote control. The special-function buttons on the next page appear only on the remote control. To use the remote control, point it at the VCR and press the desired button(s). 1. MONITOR Button - press to view a TV program during playback. See "TV Monitor Function", on Faxback Doc. # 33721. 2. Number Buttons - allow direct selection of any channel within the tuner's range. See "How the VCR's Tuner Works", on Faxback Doc. # 33719. You can also use these buttons to set the clock or enter timer information. 3. PROG Button - use to set the clock and automatic program timers. This button is explained in detail in "Setting the Clock", below, and "Automatic Timer Recording", on Faxback Doc. # 33720. 4. PROG/QTR/CLEAR Button - use to erase the quick timer recording settings and automatic program timers. 5. BLANK SEARCH Button - press to search for a blank portion. See "Blank Search System" on Faxback Doc. # 33721. 6. RESET Button - press to reset the counter to 0h 00m 00s. 7. TAPE SPEED Button - press to select the desired recording speed. (The corresponding tape indicator lights.) See "Tape Selection" on Faxback Doc. # 33720. 8. AUDIO OUT Button - press to select the sound you hear during recording and playback. See "Controlling VCR Inputs and Outputs", on Faxback Doc. # 33719. 9. TV/VCR Button - press so that VCR appears on the display to watch the signal you select using INPUT. Press again so that VCR does not appear on the display for normal TV viewing. 10. CH SCAN Button - press to scan all memorized channels. 11. CH PROG AUTO, ERASE - use to program the tuner's and Manual Buttons memory. AUTO has the same function as CH PROGRAM inside the control compartment. See "Programming the Tuner Memory", on Faxback Doc. # 33719. 12. QTR (ON TIME) and - use to set the quick timer (OFF TIME) Buttons recording. See "Quick Timer Recording", on Faxback Doc. # 33720. 13. AUTO TRACKING Button - press during playback to use the auto-tracking feature. 14. MEMORY Button - press to select the counter memory function. See "Real-Time Counter with Memory", on Faxback Doc. # 33721. 15. SLOW, \/, and /\ Buttons - press SLOW during playback to start slow motion. To vary the slow-motion speed, press \/ or /\. See "Special Functions", on Faxback Doc. # 33721. 16. INDEX/GO-TO Button - press to search for a specific recorded program or a section of that program. See "Index Scan," "Index Search," and "Go-To Playback", on Faxback Doc. # 33721. SETTING THE CLOCK Use the remote control to set the clock. Set the clock accurately for proper automatic timer and quick timer recording. We suggest you refer to a TV or radio station to obtain the correct time. NOTE: For "Setting the Clock", (this secton) and "Automatic Timer Recording", on Faxback Doc. # 33720, the instructions refer to the TV's on-screen display indicators. Some of the indicators on the VCR's display vary slightly. In the following example, the clock is set to 9:30 p.m. July 4, 1991. 1. Press POWER to turn on the VCR. 2. Turn on your TV and set it to the same channel as the VCR's CHANNEL 3/4 switch (located on the back of the VCR). Then, press TV/VCR on the remote control so that VCR appears on the VCR's display. The TV screen shows a blue display. NOTE: If you use a TV monitor, be sure to set it to the video mode. 3. Press PROG on the remote control. a. If you are setting the clock after plugging in the VCR, the clock setting mode automatically appears on the TV screen with the hour digits flashing. b. If you are not setting the clock for the first time after plugging in the VCR, the MENU display appears on the TV screen. Press 1 to enter the clock-setting mode. The first hour digit flashes. 4. Press the remote control's number buttons to set the correct hour and minute. (Press 0, 9, 3, and 0 to set 9:30, for example.) Precede a single-digit entry with 0. If you press a wrong number button, press PROG/QTR/CLEAR and press the correct button. 5. Press 1 to select a.m. or press 2 to select p.m. Your VCR uses a 12-hour a.m./p.m. clock. 6. Press the number buttons to set the correct date (Press, 0, 7, 0, 4, 9, and 1 to set July 4, 1991, for example.) 7. Review the entered information. If it is correct, press PROG. The clock setting mode display changes to the MENU display and the VCR display changes to the correct clock display. If the information is not correct, press PROG/QTR/CLEAR as necessary to erase the wrong information. Then, enter the correct information. Press PROG to store the information. 8. Press PROG again to clear the MENU display. NOTES: If you enter an invalid date or time (13:00, for example), ? flashes. Enter the correct date or time. Seconds begin counting at 00 when you press PROG after you set the date. If the display shows an abnormal reading or no reading, unplug the power cord for about 5 minutes.
